(km/h) but, if you exceed 100 km/h then
you’ll get a speeding ticket, and if you
drive too slowly then you’ll be late. Now
imagine there are lots of people heading
to the same destination and each has
a different tolerance for safety when it
comes to speed, so some will drive at 95
km/h, some at 98 km/h. That variability
is down to the person who’s driving the
car. However, if everyone used cruise
control to drive at exactly 100 km/h, then
their journey times would be more con-
sistent, and no one would get a fine.
“APC is the process equivalent of
cruise control. The variability that we
see in mining and metals process per-
formance is often down to the way in
which human operators respond to
changes in key parameters. Operating
processes in a more consistent way on
a large scale can lead to big increases
in productivity and efficiency over time.”

might want to focus on lowering its op-
erating costs. The optimizer functional-
ity in modern APC systems gives op-
erators the flexibility to optimize based
upon their specific schedule, plan and
key performance indicators (KPIs).”
In the future, coupling APC solutions
with those that harness AI and machine
learning (ML), either to orchestrate
complete plant performance, or to
solve adjacent challenges, could offer
unprecedented levels of performance.
“It’s common to have multiple APC
systems running within a plant,” said Aly.
“But I haven’t seen an additional orches-
tration layer deployed yet. Enabling that
would require input from business intelli-
gence, and connection to planning and
scheduling information. To give an anal-
ogy, it would be like the shift from cruise
control to fully autonomous vehicles. This
is where AI and machine learning could
potentially add value in the future.”
He added: “Going forward, cost pres-
sures on mining and metals companies
are only going to increase. We’re see-
ing degredation of ore grades, which
means that more effort needs to be

scheduled to arrive in Q2 of 2025.
The order comprises multiple LF-7 diesel LHDs and MK-

for a payload of 7,000 kg with bucket sizes up to 4 m3. The
dumpers have 20- and 30-mt payloads, with boxes up to
18 m3 and 320 kW engine power ratings. GHH claims that low

decided to transition the haul truck

The first two years of the conver-

Autonomous and remote control capabilities can help a miner
resolve current needs. “These electric-driven drills can potentially
address labor constraints by offering advanced automation that
enhances safety and productivity from a control room,” she said.
“Epiroc’s proprietary RCS offers advanced on-board and off-
board automation that significantly enhances safety, accuracy, and
productivity,” Hussein said. “RCS allows the operators to instead
become controllers and, along with their management, choose
their desired level of interaction with the harsh drilling conditions.”
Both rigs offer increased uptime and lower costs. “The elim-
ination of traditional fuel consumption gives substantial opera-
tional cost savings,” Hussein said.
“The electric motors Epiroc designs into the electric range
ensures increased life of the powertrain,” she said. “The re-
duced maintenance intrusion and reduced circulation of fuel
means no fuel filters or risks of system contamination, which
reduces the mine’s operational expenses.”
The rigs provide operators with “safe, clean, and more sus-
tainable operations,” she said. “Electrification options like our
hydraulic cable reel coupled with the precision of RCS take out
operator manual intervention and creates the most comfortable
conditions for a driller.” The rigs produce less noise than their
diesel equivalents.
The Pit Viper 231 E and 235 E can help an operation achieve
sustainability goals. “The electric drill range answers the cus-
tomers’ needs for a zero-emission solution to align with increas-
ingly stringent environmental regulations,” Hussein said. “The
Pit Viper 231 E and Pit Viper 235 E showcase a proactive ap-
