DAY 1 | May 16, 2024 Empowering Basic Education: Unveiling Research Trends
Anchored on SDGs

Dr. Lydia S. Roleda is a professor at the Department of Science Education of the Br.
Andrew Gonzalez FSC College of Education at De La Salle University. She teaches
physics and pedagogy courses to the graduate students of science education. She
completed her degree in PhD Physics under the DOST-ESEP sandwich program
where she did her research at the University of New South Wales in Sydney,
Australia. She was a faculty of the Department of Physics at the College of Science
before she was transferred to her current department in 2002. At BAGCED, she
served as the Project Director of the Capacity Building Program in Science and Math
Education (a scholarship program under DOST-SEI), Assistant Dean for Research
and Advanced Studies, and Chair of the Department of Science Education. She has
led 3 international Erasmus+ projects, namely, Action Research to Innovate Science
Teaching (ARTiST, 2016-2019), Internationalisation of Higher Education at the
Philippines Network (ANTENA, 2018-2022), and Educating Science Teachers for All
(ESTA, 2019-2024). Her current research interests are gamification, culturally
responsive teaching, technological innovations in science teaching like using virtual
reality, etc.

Dr. Jason Alinsunurin


DAY 2 | May 17, 2024 Charting a Path to Quality Basic Education in the
Philippines by 2030

Jason Alinsunurin is associate dean of the De La Salle University School of


Economics in Manila, Philippines. He holds a PhD from the University of Bologna
(Italy), an MA from Ateneo de Manila University and a BSc from the University of the
Philippines. He has also been a visiting scholar at the Public Governance Institute
of KU Leuven in Belgium. Prior to academia, he held consulting appointments at the
World Bank and the Asian Development Bank. His research interests are in the
economics of education, skills formation and employment policies.

Dr. Mary Janet M. Amado
Qualitative Tools for Data Analysis

Mary Janet M. Arnado is a professor of sociology and former chair of the Department of Sociology and Behavioral Sciences at De La
Salle University in Manila. She is a board member and immediate past president of the Philippine Sociological Society. She has
worked as a consultant for various organizations, including UNICEF, US Peace Corps, Innovations for Poverty Action, CAB
International, and Millennium Challenge Account.

Janet held an ASIA fellowship at the Asia Research Institute of the National University of Singapore. For her research on women and
migration, she received the 2010 Outstanding Young Scientist Award in the field of Sociology, given by the National Academy of
Science and Technology. Janet studies social inequalities and mobilities among the marginalized and various topics in education,
migration, work, urban agriculture, health, and spirituality. She is the author of Mistresses and Maids: Inequality among Third World
Women Wage Earners (De La Salle University Press, 2003) and co-author of Casualties of Globalization: Natural Resources, Violent
Conflict and Displacement in Mindanao, Philippines (with Mary Ann Arnado, VDM Verlag, 2008). She has also published several
journal articles and book chapters. Janet obtained her doctorate in Sociology from Virginia Tech.

Ms. Stella P. Go
Designing Alternative Protocols to Ensure Ethical Conduct Of Research: Insights for Basic Education Teachers

Stella P. Go is currently the Convenor of the Philippine Migration Research Network (PMRN) of the Philippine Social Science Council
and a member of the Humanities and Social Sciences Faculty of the Integrated School of De La Salle University, Manila. She is
currently a member of the Research Ethics Review Panel (RERP) of De La Salle University. She was an Associate Professor at what
is now the Sociology and Behavioral Sciences Department of De La Salle University, Manila, where she was also Chairperson from
2009-2012. She is a founding member of the Pi Gamma Mu, Philippine Beta Chapter, an International Honor Society in the Social
Sciences.

She is a licensed professional teacher whose academic training has been in the field of Behavioral Sciences. She graduated with a
BA in Behavioral Sciences (Magna Cum Laude) from St. Theresa's College, Cebu, and a Master of Arts (M.A.) in Sociology from the
University of Hawaii (Manoa). She completed all the course requirements (except for the dissertation) toward a Ph.D. in Social
Psychology at the Ateneo de Manila University.

Over the course of her professional life, she has served in various leadership roles in many professional associations and organizations
such as the Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC) and the Philippine Population Association (PPA) where was a member of the
Governing Council and the Board of Trustees, respectively. She was also a member of the Executive Board of the Philippine
Sociological Society (PSS) and the Regional Deputy Chair for Southeast Asia of the Asia-Pacific Migration Research Network
(APMRN). She is a regular member of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) as well as other international
professional organizations such as the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) and the Asian Population
Association (APA).

Her main research interest centers around issues in international migration, including its psycho-social impacts on the family, its
gender dimensions and migration governance. She has written and co-authored numerous publications, both locally and internationally
on the topic of international migration.

Over the years, she has also served as a Philippine country expert for various international agencies such as the Organisation for
Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the International Organization for
Migration (IOM), and as a resource person at various international meetings on international migration.

In recent years, she has been conducting training workshops on maintaining research integrity in human participant research in the
Social Sciences for faculty and graduate students in various higher education institutions under the auspices of the Philippine Social
Science Council and CHED.
Ms. Liezl Rillera-Astudillo

Aside from her experience as an HR Practitioner for over five years, LIEZL RILLERA-ASTUDILLO is an experienced educator with an extensive
background in teaching Behavioral Sciences courses and Social Science Statistics, conducting social science research, and facilitating different training
activities. Before joining the pool of professors in De La Salle University-Manila in 2010, she was an Assistant Professor at the University of the
Philippines Baguio for over 9 years. Her life in the academe opened various doors of opportunity for her to mentor different sectors like those from the
Department of Health, the Philippine National Police, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the National Economic Development Authority - CAR,
CRHRDC, Department of Education, different universities and other educational institutions. She wrote a number of academic and commissioned
research papers.
In 2014, she was conferred the best consultant and adviser by the Armed Forces of the Philippines Civil-Military Operations School (AFP-CMOS) for
her exemplary, outstanding contribution and invaluable service rendered. At a time of curricular restructuring, she was one of those who took a proactive
and strategic stance by helping a private school in Baguio establish its Senior High program two years ahead of its full implementation in the country.
It was also during this period that she took on the position of academic head of the program.
At present, she is the Research and Development Director at the De La Salle University Integrated School. Aside from her present position, she is
regularly invited as a resource person and/ or training facilitator. She finished both her baccalaureate degrees in BS Psychology (Cum Laude) and MS

Dr. Chona Camille Vince Cruz - Abeledo


Never Alone: The Value of Research Mentoring and Collaboration to Create Better Science

Dr. Chona Camille VinceCruz-Abeledo is a scientist, educator, science communicator, and entrepreneur from the Philippines. Her
research team focuses on developing innovative solutions benefiting fishers and farmers by combining molecular biology, genetics,
ecology, big data, machine learning, and information technology. Notably, her research on Scylla species in the Philippines, blending
genetics and ecology, earned her the DOST-PCIEERD's 2015 Outstanding Research and Development Award for Emerging
Technologies. Their research has culminated in the creation of CrabTECH Innovations, an aquatech startup, where Dr. VinceCruz-
Abeledo aims to commercialize technologies enhancing the efficiency of mangrove crab farms in the Philippines, promoting
sustainability.
As a faculty of the Department of Biology at De La Salle University, Dr. VinceCruz-Abeledo has tirelessly promoted the importance
of science education. Her academic journey includes a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and a Master's
in Environment and Natural Resources Management from the University of the Philippines, and a PhD in Biology from the De La
Salle University with a Fulbright dissertation grant at the University of Washington.
Recognized as a 2021 Outstanding Asian Science Diplomat and one of 2021's Southeast Asian Women Science Leaders, Dr.
VinceCruz-Abeledo actively engages in citizen science projects addressing climate change impacts on coastal communities and
assessing plastic pollution in diverse ecosystems. Her team's community initiatives earned her the 2023 La Sallian Pillar of
Excellence Award in Community Engagement. She is also the creator of the science channel SHE-ensya, reflecting her commitment
to bridging the communication gap between the scientific community and society.
Ms. Marian Ramos-Eclevia
Don't be a Prey: Understanding Open Access and Predatory Publications
Marian Ramos-Eclevia is the Director of Libraries at De La Salle University. She graduated from the University of the Philippines
Diliman in 2000 with a Bachelor of Library and Information Science and in 2005 with a Master of Library and Information Science,
demonstrating her strong academic background. She is presently pursuing a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Management at
De La Salle University. She has over a decade of experience with reference and information services and library management in an
academic library. Her research interests include use and user studies, information literacy, digital reference services, collection
analysis, bibliometrics, and library leadership. Currently, she serves as the Secretary of the Philippine Association for Media and
Information Literacy and is a co-founder of REGALO Touching Lives (an advocacy group), showcasing her commitment to community
engagement and service.

Marian Ramos-Eclevia (also referred to as Yani) is the Director of Libraries at De La Salle University. She was the Assistant Director
for Support Services and Assistant Director for Operations for over five years before assuming her current role. Yani graduated from
the University of the Philippines Diliman in 2000 with a Bachelor of Library and Information Science and in 2005 with a Master of
Library and Information Science. She is presently pursuing a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Management at De La Salle
University. With over a decade of experience in academic libraries, Yani has cultivated and enhanced her expertise in reference
and information services and library administration. Her research interests include information literacy, digital reference services,
collection analysis, bibliometrics, library management and leadership, among others. Her research expertise has been demonstrated
through the publication of articles in reputable Scopus journals that have addressed crucial matters in the fields of library and
information science. "Internationalization Activities and Practices of Philippine Academic Libraries: Becoming a Global Library at the
Local" and "Librarians' Competencies in Teaching Information Literacy in the Online Environment" are among her most recent works.
Beyond her scholarly contributions, Yani is a sought-after speaker at various seminars and conferences, sharing insights on topics
like reference and information services, information literacy, library instruction, and access to information.

Her remarkable contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the University of the Philippines Gawad
Tsanselor Award in 2012 and the UP Library Science Alumni Association Young Achiever in 2013. In addition to her work in library
science, Yani was co-anchor of "LibRadio: Librarians sa Radyo, DZUP 1602" from 2010 to 2012. She has served as a leader in
prestigious professional organizations, including the Philippine Association of Academic/Research Librarians and the Philippine
Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science. Currently, she serves as the Secretary of the Philippine Association for

Mr. Christian P. Gopez


Preparing Scholarly Manuscripts for Publication: A Guide for Beginning Basic Education Teacher-Researchers

Mr. Christian P. Gopez is a faculty and the Chair of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Integrated School
Senior High School Division of De La Salle University. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and Balagtas Awardee from Philippine
Normal University Manila and Master of Arts in Philippine Studies – Language, Culture, and Media from De La Salle University
(Outstanding MA Thesis and Outstanding Contribution to the Department). He is also writing his dissertation under the PhD Philippine
Studies program at the same university.
He is a resource speaker in seminars and workshops on blended learning, technology integration, 21st-century environment,
journalism, and research. He is also a Google Certified Teacher, Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert, Licensure Examination for
Teachers Coach, an Apple Teacher, and an author of textbooks for basic education.
In 2020, he received the Gawad PSLLF sa Saliksik from the Pambansang Samahan sa Linggwistika at Literaturang Filipino for his
remarkable research on Philippine alternative media. De La Salle University Integrated School also recognized him in 2023 as the
Most Outstanding Teacher.
He has published, presented, and conducted research projects on technology, education, philippine studies, language, culture, and
media. Currently, he is teaching both in the senior high school and undergraduate levels of DLSU and managing the Sinaya:
Philippine Journal for Senior High School Teachers and Students as its Founding Editor-In-Chief.
