section B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks

1. Explain the following:
i. Passive elements & their V-I relations
ii. Define ohms law and its limitations
iii. Difference between impedance, reactance, admittance & susptance

SECTION -B
Answer any FIVE of the following questions (With internal choice) 5x10=60m
2. Find the power supplied by different sources using KCL and KVL equations in the following
given circuit shown in figure 1 [10m]

3. a) In the circuit shown in figure 2, determine ‘V’ using Thevenin’s theorem. [3+7]

4.a.calculate the peak factor and form factor for a given sinusoidal volatge V(t) = Vm sin(ωt)
b. explain the steady behaviour of RLC circuit in detail. [5+5m]

5. a. A coil having an inductance of 2 H is connected in series with a resistance of 10 Ω and
a capacitor of 50 μF. The whole combination is connected to a 200 V variable frequency
supply. Determine i) the resonant frequency,
ii) the current in the circuit at resonance
iii) corresponding voltage developed across the capacitor.
iv) Quality factor
v) band width.
b. Derive ralation between line and phase voltages and currents in star connected three
phase circuit. [5+5m]
6. a. Explain briefly about different types losses in a 1-ph transformer and about how efficiency
is Calculated
b. Derive the condition for maximum efficiency and load at which maximum efficiency can
be achieved. [5+5m]
or
7. a. A 100 kVA, 1000/10000 V, 50 Hz, Single phase transformer has an iron loss of 1100 W.
The copper loss with 5 A in the high voltage winding is 400 W. Calculate the efficiency
at 25 %, 0.8 Power factor. The output terminal voltage being maintained at 10000 V.
b. A single phase transformer working at unity power factor has an efficiency of 90% at both
one half load and at the full load of 500 W. Determine the efficiency at 75% of full load.[5+5m]

8.a. Explain the principle of production of rotating magnetic field in a 3-phase induction Motor.
b. Derive the condition for maximum torque under running condition of 3-phase Induction
Motor. [5+5m]

2. a) Explain about different types of sources. Find the current in 20Ω using KVL equations

in the Following given circuit shown in figure 1 [10m]

4. a.Define RMS value and AVERAGE value of AC voltage .

b.Find the RMs value of given AC voltage. If T=10sec and V 0=230V [2+8m]

5.a.A voltage V(t)=230sin314t is applied to a series RLC circuit where R=60Ω, L=0.18mH
and C=20μF. Find:
i) The power supplied by the source ii) The reactive power supplied by the source
iii) The reactive power of the capacitor iv) The reactive power of the inductor and
v) The power factor of the circuit.
b. A coil takes a current of 2 A at 0.8 lagging power factor from a 220 V, 50 Hz single phase
source. If the coil modeled by a series RL circuit,
find i) The complex power in the coil and ii) The values of R and L.
c.Derive the expression for RMS value of alternating current wave I = ImSin ωt. [5+2+3m]
6.a. Explain regulation & efficiency of a transformer with phasor diagrams
b.Explain the operation of an auto transformer with a neat diagram. [5+5m]

400-V, and three-phase system. Find the line current delivered by the source. Draw the

6. a. Write about OC test and SC conducted on transformer and their significance


b. A 150 kVA, 1000/10000 V, 50Hz single phase transformer has iron loss of 1000W.
The copper loss with 10 A in the high voltage winding is 600 W.Calculate the efficiency
at i) 25 %, ii) 50 % iii) 100 % of normal load at power factor of 0.8. [7+3m]

7.a. Determine the equivalent network parameters of the 220/2200, 10KVA 1-phase transformer
and also determine the efficiency at half of the full load using following data when s/c and
o/c test are conducted
Test data :
Open circuit test: 220V, 0.5A, 250W
Short circuit test : 550v, 4.5A, 1KW
b. A transformer, tested on full load is found to have cu loss of 1.5% reactance drop 3%
calculate its full load regulation at (I) 0.89pf lag (ii) 0.89 pf leading (iii) unity pf [5+5m]

8. a. Describe about speed control methods of DC motors


b. Describe the characteristics of separately excited dc motor. [5+5m]

9. a. Explain torque –slip characteristics of 3-phase induction motor

2.a) In the following given circuit shown in figure 1,
calculate i) v1,v2,v3 ii) power delivered to R1, R2 and R3.

the given circuit is 40 Ω, find and the frequency of the circuit.

5.a) A coil of resistance 5 ohms and inductance 120mH in series with 100uf capacitor,
is connected to a 300V, 50 Hz supply, Calculate
i) The current flowing in resistor
ii) Phase difference between voltage and current
iii) The voltage across the coil and voltage across the capacitor
b) A three phase balanced delta connected load of (10+j6) ohm is connected across a 440V,
3ϕ balanced supply. Determine the phase currents and line currents. Assume the phase
of sequence to be RYB [5+5m]

7.a. A 200KVA transformer has an efficiency of 98% at full load. If the maximum efficiency
occurs at three quarters of full load, calculate a) iron loss at FL b) cu loss at FL
c) efficiency at Half load. Ignore magnetising current and asume a pf 0.8 at all loads
b.A single phase transformer working at unity power factor has an efficiency of 92% at both
one half load and at the full load of 500 W. Determine the efficiency at 85% of full load.

ii) 1 h.p. motor is operated 2 hours per day
iii) 1 k.W heater is operated 1 hour per day
iv) 1 computer is used for 6 hours per day with printer about 30 minutes.

c) 12 pole, 3 phase alternator driven at a speed of 500rpm supplies power to an 8pole,
3phase induction motor. If the slip of the motor at full load is 0.03, calculate the full load
