Indications for Use The intended use of the Kolibri is to provide a complete hardware platform for Brainlab Image Guid-
ed Surgery software.
Careful Hardware
Handling
System components and accessory instrumentation comprise precise mechanical

parts. Handle them carefully.
Only trained medical personnel may operate system components and accessory in-
strumentation.
Plausibility Review
Before patient treatment, review the plausibility of all information input to and output
from the system.

1.5.1 Training
Brainlab Training To ensure safe and appropriate system use, all users should participate in an extensive training pro-
gram held by a Brainlab representative before using the system for the first time.
Supervised Before using the system for surgical procedures where computer-aided navigation is considered crit-

BEFORE YOU BEGIN
2.2.2 Correct System Handling
General Use • The workstation is delivered pre-installed and can be used immediately
• All system components are suitable for continuous operation
• Only use system components indoors
Only individuals trained by Brainlab may use the system in a clinical environment.
Prior to surgery, test the system to ensure that all components are functioning prop-
erly. Do not use equipment if you suspect that it is damaged in any way.
Risk of Electric
Shock
To prevent electric shock or permanent damage to the system, do not expose the mon-
itor, computer, camera system or mobile camera stand to excessive moisture.
To avoid risk of electric shock, do not touch the patient and any system parts simul-
taneously.
Serviceability
There are no serviceable parts in the system. Do not remove any covers.
Camera &
Touchscreen
The camera and touchscreen are highly precise and fragile electrical equipment. Han-
dle them carefully.
Patient Safety
For safety reasons the system components must not come into direct physical con-
tact with the patient.
MR Environment
All system components are MR unsafe.

System Components & Correct Handling
Restrictions to
Environment
System components are not suitable for use in the presence of flammable anesthetic
mixtures containing air, oxygen, nitrous oxide or laughing gas.
Do not let liquids entering the system components.
Do not place system components on an unstable cart, stand, or table. The system
might fall down and be seriously damaged.
Interferences
The system produces electromagnetic fields that may interfere with other sensitive
equipment, and can itself be disturbed by other electromagnetic fields.
Due to EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) reasons, do not use system components

adjacent to or stacked with other equipment. If it is unavoidable to stack the system
or use it adjacent to other equipment, verify that the workstation operates normally.
The camera’s infrared light may interfere with other IR-based OR equipment, such as
remote controls, pulse oximeters, IR sensitive microscopes.
If other devices are interfered by the camera’s infrared light, reposition these devices and/or the
camera so that interference effects are no longer visible.

2.3.1 Malfunctions

• System components exhibit a distinct decrease in performance, indicating need for servicing

• The camera LEDs indicate to contact Brainlab support

4. Ship the defective component to relevant return address or follow instructions given by
Brainlab support.

Microscopes Before powering on the surgical microscope and Kolibri workstation, perform the follow steps:

3. Power on Kolibri workstation.

VGA Output / Loop A TV can be connected using one of the video out ports h or j.
The two video out ports h and j are only activated if loop port k and VGA output/loop port s are
connected with the loop cable.
The loop cable connects loop port k to VGA output/loop s.

3.3.4 Protection Cover for Top Panel
Purpose
Always cover the top panel with the protection cover to protect it from liquids or dust.

3.3.5 Restrictions on Connecting Equipment to Panels
Restrictions
Additional equipment connected to medical electrical equipment must comply with

the respective IEC or ISO standards (e.g., IEC 60950 for data processing equipment
and IEC 60601-1 for medical equipment). Furthermore, all configurations shall comply
with the requirements for medical electrical systems (see IEC 60601-1-1 or clause 16
of the 3rd edition of IEC 60601-1, respectively). Anyone connecting additional equip-
ment to medical electrical equipment configures a medical system and is therefore re-
sponsible that the system complies with the requirements for medical electrical
systems. Please note that local laws take priority over the above mentioned require-
ments. In doubt, consult your local representative or the technical service department.
NOTE: Unless otherwise specified, the use of multiple socket outlet(s) is not permitted.
Safe Handling of
Cables
Unplug and wind up all cables when system is not in use or before moving it. Do not
pull cables.
USB
Only connect passive USB devices to the system, otherwise safety and effectiveness
of the equipment cannot be guaranteed.

Ensuring
Ventilation
Do not block or cover ventilation slots on system cover or housing, for example, with
drapes. Air must be allowed to circulate through these slots to ensure that the system
operates properly and does not overheat.
Do not place system near or over a radiator or heat register or in direct sunlight. Place
computer in a small enclosure only if providing proper ventilation.

3.4.2 Turning On System
How to Turn On
Steps
1. Ensure that all cables have been connected.
2. Remove all USB flash drives.
Otherwise, software cannot recognize patient data.
3. Connect power inlet s to an appropriate power supply using power cable.
4. Press power switch a.
5. Press On/Off button d briefly.
Power LED f indicates that system is running and under electrical power.
6. Wait for system to boot.
Once operating system has been initialized, the startup screen opens.
7. Follow instructions in the Software User Guide.
Power Supply
Operate system using the power source indicated on type plate. If you are unsure of
type of power available, consult Brainlab support or your local power company. Using
the wrong power source could permanently damage system, rendering it inoperable.
Check voltage setting before plugging power cable into wall outlet.
Only operate the system using the power cable provided with the system.
Waiting Period
If system has been turned off, wait at least 60 seconds before turning it on again. Oth-
erwise, high input current may trip the circuit breaker.

3.4.3 Turning Off System
How to Turn Off

Steps
1. Ensure that software has been closed.
2. Shut down system.
3. Press On/Off button d briefly.
4. Press power switch a.
5. Unplug and secure all cables.
The On/Off button does not disconnect the workstation from mains voltage. Unplug
power plug or use power switch to ensure complete voltage disconnection.
Switch off power before connecting or disconnecting cables.
How to Reset
Options
To reset the computer (if system has frozen or has not shut down):
• Press On/Off button d for five seconds or
• Press power switch a at back of system
Waiting Periods
When disconnecting the system from line voltage, wait at least 10 seconds before re-
connecting it.
Do not turn off system during boot-up. Otherwise, configuration files and other data
on hard disk may be damaged.
Emergency
In case of emergency only, unplug detachable power cable or use power switch to si-
multaneously disconnect all supply poles. If your system is equipped with an UPS,
switch the UPS off.
Loss of Data
Failure to follow system shutdown procedure prior to disconnecting power may result
in irreversible loss of data.

3.5.1 Positioning Touchscreen

1. Grip touchscreen with one hand and with your other hand hold workstation in place.
2. Pull touchscreen forwards or push backwards into desired position.
When positioning touchscreen, note that colors may not be displayed correctly if
touchscreen is not positioned correctly. So that colors are properly displayed, your
line of vision must be perpendicular to the touchscreen.

Diagnostic Use
The touchscreen monitor does not comply with DIN EN 6868 and it is not intended for
diagnostic use. Video images are not suitable for diagnostic use, as they may appear
distorted.

3.5.3 Draping Touchscreen
Touchscreen Drape The monitor is draped using the sterile Touchscreen Drape provided by Brainlab.
The drape allows you to intraoperatively access all software functions and position monitor during
surgery without compromising the sterile field.
Packaging The Touchscreen Drape is delivered sterile. Ensure that drape packaging does not have any holes
or tears.
Before use, check expiration date on drape packaging. If date has expired, do not use
drape but dispose it of.
Sterile Field
Maintaining the sterile field can only be guaranteed by using the Brainlab Touch-
screen Drape. Using other drapes may cause monitor to malfunction.
Carefully drape touchscreen. The drape maintains the surgeon's sterile field and pro-
vides a sterile barrier between patient and touchscreen.
Disposal Dispose the Touchscreen Drape of after use.

1. Open packaging under sterile conditions.
2. Ensure that wings (with adhesive tabs) are not unfolded, but stay inside.
NOTE: Wings are designed for a different monitor type, hence they are not necessary for
Kolibri monitor.

3.6.1 Computer Transportation Case
Purpose To protect Kolibri workstation from damage during transporting, transport it in the computer trans-
portation case provided by Brainlab.
The computer transportation case has a telescopic handle and wheels.
NOTE: The computer transportation case is only provided with demo systems. To transport a non-
demo system, contact Brainlab support.

3.6.2 Storage
General Before and after placing the system into storage for an extended period of time, steps must be taken

2. Fully recharge UPS battery.
3. Start system and verify correct function before using it for surgery.

2. Unplug all external cabling and store it together with the equipment.
3. Cover camera and monitors with protection covers.

2. Contact Brainlab support to install a new UPS battery.
3. Fully recharge UPS battery.
4. Perform a recurrent test to verify safety and effectiveness of equipment (offered by
Brainlab, see Technical User Guide).
5. Start system and verify correct function before using it for surgery.

Safe Moving If a clear, flat path is unavailable (e.g., an unavoidable depth variation between rooms), follow the
procedure on page 84 to overcome this obstruction.
Open the brakes before moving the cart.
Watch out for barriers on the floor, such as cables or door steps. Avoid objects which
may be lying on floor.
Only move the system (Kolibri Cart and Mobile Camera Stand individually or docked
together) in the secure moving position.
The system may only be used on level surfaces.
Avoid Vibrations
If moving cart while UPS and Kolibri workstation are switched on, do not expose work-
station to strong vibrations or impacts. This could damage the workstation and result
in an irreversible loss of data.

5.3.1 Introduction & Compatibility
Functionality The camera stand:

• Enables mobile positioning of camera
• Allows adjustment of angle and height of camera

Measurements
Active Wireless Only use active wireless tools specified by Brainlab.

Tools
Do not use more than one active wireless tool at the same time.
NOTE: Communication with wireless tools (such as z-touch) can be established even when the
Kolibri Spectra Camera Kit is warming up.
Careful Handling
The camera is a highly sensitive optical device. Handle it with care.
Damages &
Cleanness
Do not use the camera when it is damaged or if there are any scratches on the inner
ring of camera lenses.
Do not use camera if illuminator filter and lenses are dirty.
Air Flow
Do not obstruct normal air flow around the camera, for example, by draping or bagging
the camera. Doing so could affect the camera’s operational environment beyond its
recommended thresholds.

5.4.3 Sterilizable Camera Handle Sleeve
Purpose The sterilizable camera handle sleeve is placed on the camera handle to enable intraoperative cam-
era positioning without compromising the sterile field.

Safe Handling
Do not position camera over patient.
The components in the camera unit are precise, sensitive instruments. Dropping or
jolting the camera may cause miscalibration.
Do not touch the camera lenses. Smudges on lenses can distort tracking.

Camera Field of Position camera so that the operating field is in the center of the camera field of view. Optimal work-
View ing distance is 1.2 to 1.8 m from the camera to the operating field.
If instruments are not in camera field of view, they cannot be tracked.
The navigation software camera displays and the camera field of view dialog (see Software User
Guide) help you to determine the best camera position.

Measurement precision in a plane perpendicular to viewing direction of camera is

higher than precision along the direction of camera view. Take this into account when
positioning the camera.
Do not place any transparent or semi-transparent materials (such as drape foil or

glass) between camera and instruments to be tracked.
Ensure that all highly reflective items or sources of light do not obstruct the camera’s
view. Artifacts caused by reflections can reduce accuracy, especially during registra-
tion.

Cleaning Intervals Regularly inspect the camera for cleanliness. The camera, particularly the illuminator filters and
lenses, should be cleaned only when necessary. The frequency of cleaning must be determined by
the user. This may include “in-use” cleaning.
How to Clean
Steps
1. Remove dust from each illuminator filter and lens using a photographic lens duster
(brush).
Gently wipe surface in one direction only, by pulling brush across surface.
2. Gently wipe illuminator filters and lenses with disinfectant wipes containing 70% isopro-
panol or Meliseptol.
3. Clean the remainder of the camera, taking care not to wipe debris from the camera case
onto the illuminator filters or lenses.
Avoid prolonged contact between the wipes and the camera.
4. Clean the illuminator filters and lenses using a commercial lens cleaning solution formu-
lated for multi-coated lenses (e.g., AR66) and a clean knitted microfiber optical cleaning
cloth (e.g., Hitecloth).
Avoid prolonged contact between the lens cleaner and the illuminator filters and lenses.
Use only 70% isopropanol or Meliseptol and a lens cleaning solution formulated for
multi-coat lenses (e.g., AR66) to clean the camera. Other fluids may cause damage to
the illuminator filters. Do not use any paper products for cleaning. Paper products
may scratch illuminator filters.

General • Use only the cleaning materials listed below.

Information • Inspect all lenses weekly and clean if necessary.
• Dust first to remove particles that might scratch the lens, then clean with a solvent.
• To clean the lens, press gently with a wet optical grade cloth.
Dusting Dust the lens with one of the following:

• Clean and dry compressed air (or preferably nitrogen, if available)
• An aerosol duster
• A photographic lens duster (brush)
Cleaning • Use a cloth dampened with denatured alcohol only (85% ethanol, 15% wood alcohol).
• Do not allow solvent to spill on the paint work.
• Never use water, soap, detergent or other fluids on the lens.
Always use a moist, clean, lint free cloth to clean the Polaris. Do not reuse the same
area of the cloth. Do not use any paper products on the lens. Paper products will
scratch lenses.
