koepelvormige nesten. Als wij de kleuren van de wijfjes van den
distelvink, van den goudvink of van de merel of zwarte lijster nemen
als een maatstaf van den graad van opzichtigheid, die niet in hooge
mate gevaarlijk is voor het broedende wijfje, dan kunnen, van
bovengenoemde veertig vogels, slechts de wijfjes van twaalf worden
beschouwd als in gevaarlijke mate opzichtig, terwijl de overige acht-
en-twintig niet opzichtig zijn. 18 Er bestaat [163]ook volstrekt geen
nauw verband tusschen een goed uitgedrukt verschil in kleur
tusschen de beide seksen en den aard van het vervaardigde nest.
Zoo verschilt de mannelijke huismusch (Passer domesticus) veel
van het wijfje, de mannelijke ringmusch (P. montanus) bijna in het
geheel niet, en toch bouwen beide goed verborgen nesten. De beide
seksen van den gewonen grauwen vliegenvanger (Muscicapa
grisola) kunnen nauwelijks van elkander worden onderscheiden,
terwijl de seksen van den gevlekten vliegenvanger (M. luctuosa)
aanmerkelijk verschillen, en beide bouwen hun nesten in gaten. Het
wijfje van de merel of zwarte lijster (Turdus merula) verschilt veel,
dat van de beflijster (T. torquatus) verschilt minder, en dat van de
gewone zanglijster (T. musicus) omtrent in het geheel niet van haar
respectieve mannetje; en toch bouwen allen open nesten. De met
haar tamelijk nauw verwante waterspreeuw (Cinclus aquaticus)
bouwt daarentegen een koepelvormig nest, en toch verschillen de
seksen bijna evenveel van elkander als in het geval van de beflijster.
Het korhoen en het roode Schotsche boschhoen (Tetrao tetrix en T.
Scoticus) bouwen open nesten op even goed verborgen plaatsen;
doch bij de eene soort verschillen de seksen zeer, en bij de andere
zeer weinig.
Zoover ik kan nagaan, zijn er zeer weinig groepen van vogels die
een aanmerkelijk aantal soorten omvatten, in welke bij alle soorten
beide seksen schitterend gekleurd of gelijk zijn; doch dit schijnt, naar
ik van den heer Sclater hoor, met de Musophagae of Pisangvreters
het geval te zijn. Ook geloof ik niet, dat er een enkele groote groep
bestaat, in welke de seksen bij alle soorten zeer sterk in kleur
verschillen; de heer Wallace meldt mij, dat de Snatervogels van
Zuid-Amerika (Cotingidae) een van de beste voorbeelden daarvan
opleveren; doch bij sommige der daartoe behoorende soorten bij
welke het mannetje een prachtige roode borst heeft, vertoont ook het
wijfje eenig rood op haar borst; en de wijfjes van andere soorten
vertoonen sporen van het groen en de andere kleuren van de
mannetjes. Desniettemin hebben wij bij verscheidene groepen een
sterke toenadering tot zeer groote seksueele gelijkheid of
ongelijkheid; en dit is wegens hetgeen zooeven omtrent den
ongestadigen (fluctueerenden) aard van de erfelijkheid is gezegd,
een eenigszins verwonderlijke omstandigheid. Dat echter bij
verwante dieren in hooge mate de zelfde wetten zouden gelden, is
niet verwonderlijk. De tamme hoenders hebben een groot aantal
rassen en onder-rassen voortgebracht, en bij deze verschillen de
seksen gewoonlijk in gevederte, zoodat het als een merkwaardige
omstandigheid is opgeteekend, wanneer zij bij zekere onder-rassen
op elkander gelijken. Daarentegen heeft de tamme duif eveneens
een groot aantal onderscheidene rassen en onder-rassen
voortgebracht, bij welke, op zeldzame uitzonderingen na, de beide
seksen volkomen op elkander gelijken. Daarom zou het, wanneer
andere soorten van Gallus en Columba werden getemd en
verscheidenheden voortbrachten (varieerden), niet overijld zijn, om
te voorspellen, dat de zelfde algemeene regels van seksueele
gelijkheid en ongelijkheid, afhangende van den vorm van erfelijkheid,
in beide gevallen steek zouden houden. Op gelijksoortige wijze heeft
de zelfde vorm van erfelijkheid over het algemeen de overhand
behouden bij al de vormen van een zelfde natuurlijke groep, hoewel
sterk sprekende uitzonderingen op dezen regel voorkomen. In ééne
en de zelfde familie of in één en het zelfde geslacht kunnen de
seksen volkomen gelijk of zeer verschillend van kleur zijn.
Voorbeelden hiervan, die op één en het zelfde geslacht betrekking
hadden, zijn reeds gegeven omtrent musschen, vliegenvangers,
lijsters en boschhoenders. Bij de Familie der Fazanten zijn de
mannetjes en wijfjes van bijna al de soorten verwonderlijk ongelijk;
maar bij den geoorden fazant (Crossoptilon auritum) [170]gelijken zij
volkomen op elkander. Bij twee soorten van Chloephaga, een
geslacht van Ganzen, kunnen de mannetjes alleen door hun
meerdere lichaamsgrootte van de wijfjes worden onderscheiden,
terwijl bij twee andere de seksen zoo ongelijk zijn, dat men ze
gemakkelijk voor twee verschillende soorten zou kunnen houden. 29
In deze gevallen volgt het wijfje een normalen loop van ontwikkeling,
wanneer zij ten laatste aan de mannetjes gelijk wordt; en dergelijke
gevallen moeten niet worden verward met die waarin zieke of oude
wijfjes mannelijke kenmerken aannemen, noch met die waarin
volkomen vruchtbare wijfjes, terwijl zij nog jong zijn, door afwijking of
door de eene of andere onbekende oorzaak de kenmerken van het
mannetje verkrijgen. 31 Al deze gevallen hebben echter zooveel met
elkander gemeen, dat zij volgens de hypothese der pangenesis
afhangen van het bij het wijfje aanwezig zijn, hoewel in latenten
toestand, van de uit elk deel van het mannetje afkomstige kiemen,
terwijl het tot ontwikkeling komen der kiemen het gevolg is van de
eene of andere geringe verandering in de electieve
verwantschappen der weefsels waaruit zij bestaat.
