I often say that we don’t really need knowledge of the players to trade tennis
profitably and you can make profits just by following the numbers.

This approach is still true however what if we DID know more about the players
just by consulting a little bit of data?

So, with the tools we have we decided to look closer at the performances of
tennis players during the last season.

It can be easy to find out who won and who lost certain matches but that is not
what we are doing here.

We are looking at the PRICES of the players involved to see who the markets are
regularly over/underrating.

As a result we can already know which players are more profitable to back (or
lay) in certain situations heading into the new season!

We will start with the Men’s ATP tour. The first table below shows the
performance of each player on hard courts in 2021.

The section in light blue is for games where the player was a strong favourite
priced at under 1.5. The section in light green shows games where the player was
favourite and priced between 1.5 and 2.0. As a guide in each price band, we have
shown the performance of all players not just those in the top 40 when in the
defined price band.

For example, we can see that Djokovic played 11 matches on a hard court where
he was priced under 1.5. Of these he won 91%, but did lose the first set 5 times.
On the occasions where he lost the first set, he recovered to win the second set
80% of the time and in these games his recovery to win percentage was also 80%.

The data covers both 3 and 5 set matches.

The next table shows games where the player was the underdog, usually of course
playing against a higher ranked top 40 player.

We seem to have found a few players that might be currently flying under
the radar and are being consistent underrated by the markets. These
players could be ones to watch in the coming year.

Casper Ruud has a 90% record when priced between 1.5 and 2.0, with his only
loss coming after winning the first set. He could be a good player to back from
the start when in this price range.

• Lloyd Harris ranked 31 in the world is pretty solid when he starts as a strong
favourite and has a 90% win rate. Look to back him from the start in matches
he is a favourite in.
• Jannik Sinner was a profitable player to follow when priced under 2.50,
showing a combined £624 profit from 33 matches, a return of 19%. When
losing the first set he only recovered 50% of the time (3/6). When winning the
first set, he closed the match out in straight sets on 24/27 occasions. Back to
lay trade on Sinner when priced below 2.50 sounds good, leaving all profits on
him if he wins the first set.

The clay data is interesting and strong favourite bias seems prevalent once
again.

• Backing ANY top 10 male players when favourite in a competitive match

showed a 28% return (1.5 to 2.0 price range). With this information you could
consider backing these players if they go a set or break down and then trading
from there.
• Cameron Norrie is solid on clay and it seems like the markets have not yet
caught up to this. He won 9/9 when favourite for a combined profit of £561
and a return on investment of 62%. He also won his only game when priced
in the 2.0-2.5 bracket.

• Clay results look more volatile. Looking at top 10 players, they showed a loss
when a strong favourite, but that became a strong profit when likely to be
tested (ie in the 1.5 to 2.0 range). Backing all hot favourites lost £2101 over
205 matches a loss on investment of 10%. So when favourites are on clay, look
to lay!
• Barbora Krejcikova again showed up well with another 100% record when in
the 1.5 to 2.0. Her 7/7 record yielded a profit of £525 for a return on investment
of 75%. She won 6 of her matches in straight sets and recovered to win on the
one occasion that she dropped the first set.
• Katerina Pliskova had a 6/6 record when in the 1.5 to 2.0 bracket, showing a
profit of £448 for 75% return on investment, with three turnarounds after
losing the first set. Interestingly she has proven less reliable as a strong
favourite with 2 unexpected defeats, both in straight sets!
• The other obvious record to explore belonged to Veronika Kudermetova who
won 13/14 matches when favourite on Clay for a combined return of £518
(37%)

What To Look For

• With the grass season being quite short it is harder to draw conclusions,
but the profit from backing all players in the 2-2.5 range is interesting.
Drawing conclusions from just 87 games is dangerous though.

So, this was very useful and now you have a decent bit of data to refer to when
investing in tennis.
Many have speculated about the unreliability of favourites during Clay season
and so it is good to see some data backing that up.
I like to go against favourites a lot of the time and so that makes sense as I tend
to really enjoy matches on the clay whereas others get frustrated!
The information about the particular players is also interesting.
But I would forewarn not to follow it blindly since players and always look at
the context of the match itself.
