ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS - BATTERIES - BATTERY - Overview

Exide battery
With EXIDE C+ batteries, in order to obtain optimal performance, save fuel and extend service life, they need to be
replaced with batteries of the same type.

Should batteries be replaced with batteries of the same type, the battery sensor must be set again (see reset pro-
cedure).

If the batteries are replaced with batteries of a different type, the diagnostic instrument must be used.

The battery sensor gets switched off whenever it is disconnected from the battery. After re-connecting it, some time
will be required (dependent on the vehicle's mission) for it to be correctly aligned. During this alignment phase, the
indications displayed on the SMART alternator display (if present) and the status of the battery may not be available.

The EXIDE batteries exploit the Super Heavy Duty (S.H.D.) and High Vibration Resistance (H.V.B.) technologies.

These are low maintenance batteries with high vibration resistance, also withstanding a greater number of recharge
cycles.

EXIDE batteries present a label on the upper part containing a microchip, called RFID-TAG, used to store the main
technical characteristics of the battery such as the date of production, the VIN of the vehicle and is arranged to store
data that shows correct battery maintenance during the warranty period.

During the warranty period, battery charge of the battery / batteries must be checked, in compliance with the main-
tenance plan, using the EASY BATT case.

Use the EASY BATT case to correctly activate any batteries being replaced according to the replacement procedure.

General warnings
• It is suggested to always keep the battery at a voltage of not less than 12,5 V .
• The place of storage must not be damp and its environment temperature must not exceed 30 °C .
• Do not expose the batteries to sunlight.
• Service the batteries every 2 months from their acceptance using the EASY BATT tool.

Recharge parameters required

The recharge voltage, in case of single battery, must be in the range of 14,8 - 16 V , respectively for “standard”
type and “rapid” type recharging.

Should the recharging in series for two batteries be chosen, this is only allowed if the voltage difference between
the two batteries does not exceed 0,2 V and the battery charger is able to balance the recharge itself according
to the charge status of the individual batteries.

The recharge voltage must be set and kept steady for this procedure.

Recharge time is correlated to initial battery charge and initial current intensity provided by the battery charge.

In order to guarantee longer duration through time of the battery, at the charging stage it is advisable to limit the
recharging current intensity to a value of 10 - 25 % of the nominal current of the battery itself.

For example, for a battery with nominal current amounting to 100 A·h , the charge current must be within the range
10 A (minimum) – 25 A (maximum).

The "standard" recharge procedure is recommended to the "rapid" recharge.

In the case of "rapid" recharge check that the battery is not subject to excessive heat resulting in increased evapo-
ration of the electrolyte which can cause irreversible damage to the battery, damage is not due to a manufacturing
defect.

With recharging complete, the battery at rest and at environment temperature must measure at its terminals a nominal
voltage when idle of a value in the range of 12.7 - 12.9 V .

EASY BATT tool

The case contains:
• IVECO MIDTRONICS EXP 2013 HD Tester;
• the RFID-TAG microchip reader;
• 1 dongle for wireless data transmission between the RFID-TAG reader and the IVECO Tester;
• 1 SD card, 4 GB ;

The connection between the electronic devices in the EASY BATT tool is as follows:
• battery – RFID reader: through Bluetooth connection;
• RFID Tester MIDTRONICS EXP 2013 HD reader: through connection cable for data transfer mod DB9 (serial –
serial) or through Bluetooth connection.
• MIDTRONICS EXP 2013 HD PC E.A.SY. tester: through connection cable for data transfer USB – Serial or through
Bluetooth connection.

The parameters that characterise the battery in time are saved respectively:
• in the tester internal memory;
• in the SD CARD mounted in the MIDTRONICS Tester slot;
• in the battery RFID microchip;
• in the Server IVECO .

With the EASY BATT tool you can track the status of the batteries and throughout the entire warranty period, from
delivery to the factory / outfitter / Dealer / Authorised Shop to the end customer.

A Dealer or authorised workshop that takes charge of a vehicle with EXIDE battery / batteries has the responsibility
to ensure the proper maintenance thereof and according to the specifications given.

The Dealer, the authorised workshop as well as the specialised/trained workshop personnel, by utilising the EASY
BATT tool and by following the procedures for the acceptance, maintenance, synchronisation, battery/ies replace-
ment and final delivery to client, must carry out the appropriate maintenance and formally certify to IVECO that the
maintenance was carried out.
NOTICE: EXIDE battery maintenance.
During the vehicles take-on period, the maintenance of EXIDE batteries must be carried out every TWO months,
starting from the vehicle acceptance.

NOTE: Self-fulfilment of the procedures of acceptance, maintenance, synchronization, replacement when needed,
and delivery to the final customer voids the warranty of the same.
NOTICE: Batteries - Batteries detachment.
Should the vehicle be stopped for an extended amount of time, the battery/ies must be physically disconnected from
the vehicle's electrical system. This requirement also applies to vehicles equipped with battery disconnect devices.
NOTICE: If the vehicle is equipped with a battery sensor, in order to disconnect the battery negative pole, undo the
nut and detach the sensor from the battery pole

EASY BATT TOOL

Below is a summary of the EASY BATT tool procedures.

Activation procedure for the MIDTRONICS EXP 2013 HD Tester

At first start-up of the MIDTRONICS Tester EXP 2013 HD, the tool will prompt the used for activation.

Have the following on hand:

1. USB-RS232 cable;
2. MIDTRONICS EXP 2013 HD Tester;
3. Panasonic EASY or a PC equipped with Bluetooth;
4. an Internet connection with which to download the software from the IVECO website at http://iwd.iveco.com;
5. USERID and Password that are normally used to access web applications IVECO (http://iwd.iveco.com).
NOTE: We recommend cable connection of the two devices.

At first start-up the display of the MIDTRONICS tester shows the message « the TESTER IS INACTIVE…».

Connect the MIDTRONICS Tester to the PC using the USB-SERIAL cable.

After downloading the SW to the PC, launch it selecting the type of serial connection.

Follow the display instructions step by step.

The devices may also be connected via BLUETOOTH.

In this case launch the SW on the PC selecting Bluetooth connection. Once the connection is active, a green "dot"
will appear on your PC screen.
