BASIC MATHEMATICS
041 13TH APRIL 2024 Time 3:00 Hrs.
Instructions

1. This paper consists of sections A and B with a total of fourteen (14) questions.
2. Answer all questions in both section
3. Each question in section A carries six (6) marks while each question in section B
carries ten (10) marks
4. All writing must be in blue or black ink except drawings which must be in pencil
5. NECTA mathematical tables and non-programming calculators may be used.
6. All communication devices and any unauthorized materials are not allowed in the
assessment room
7. Write your Examination Number on every page of your answer sheet(s)

SECTION A (60 MARKS)
Answer all questions in this section

1. (a) Calculate the lowest multiple of 27, 186, 558(leave your answer as the
product of prime factors)
(b) There 150 people at a cricket match. 20% are children. One half are men and
the rest are women. How many women are at the cricket match?
(c) Z is an integer that -3<z≤2. Represent Z on number line.

2. (a) Solve for x and y, given that (23𝑥+1) (5𝑦+4) = 20


(b)Given that log 2 = 0.3010. Find the value of log 2500

(c)If = 𝑎 + 𝑏√𝑐 find the values of a, b and c

3. At ENGARENAIBOR secondary school, 40 students were asked about whether they
like Kitei or Kande or both. It was found that the number of students who like both
Kitei and Kande was three-times the number of students who like Kitei only.
Furthermore, the students who like Kande only was 6 more than twice the number of
students who like Kitei only. However, 4 students like neither Kitei nor Kande.
(a) Represent this information in Venn diagram
(b) What is the probability that the students who selected at random likes?
(i) Kitei only
(ii) Kitei and Kande

4.(a) The coordinate of P, Q and R, are (2, m), (-3, 1) and (6, n) respectively. If the
length PQ is 5 units and the midpoint of QR is ( , −1). Find the possible
values of m and n.
(b)Given vector 𝑎 = (6i + 4j), 𝑏 = (8i - 3j), and 𝑐 = 2(i + 2j)
(i) The unit vector 𝑑 =3𝑎 - 𝑏 + 𝑐
(ii) In a unit vector in a direction of vector 𝑑.

5. a) Find the perimeter of a regular hexagon inscribed in circle whose radius is


100m
b) Equilateral triangle ABC is similar to equilateral triangle PQR. One side of triangle
ABC is 5cm. Find the corresponding side of triangle PQR whose area is 4 times the
area of a triangle ABC.
6. (a) A piece of string whose length is 8.54, is cut from a string x cm long. if the
remaining parts of the string is divided equal parts of length 6cm, there will be 20
pieces. What is the length of the string?
(b) The pressure (P) varies inversely with area (A) and directly proportional to the
temperature (T).
(i) Write down the mathematical formula to represent the statement.
(ii) Evaluate the proportionality constant. Given that P=20 mmHg, T=50C
and A= 4mm2

7. (a) Mr. Ali bought 10 math’s text book for Ugandan shillings (Ush) 250,000/= if he
will decide to buy the same quantity of textbook in Tanzanian shillings. How much
money he will spend if 1Ush equivalent to 0.65Tsh?

(b) From the following information given by Mbeya Co. Ltd for the year ended 31st
December 2023
Stock 01 January 2023 ………three quarter of the closing stock
Stock 31st December 2023 ………..………… of net purchase

Calculate:
(i) Cost of goods sold

8. (a) Mr. Reuben was employed in 1st march 2021 as a marketing officer at Matarakwa
Warehouse Company with a monthly salary of Tsh. 500,000. According to the
employment agreement his salary was set to be increasing by Tsh 25,000 each month. If
his employment was terminated 1st July 2022, how much Mr Reuben earn during his
service in the company?

(b) In a forest, some logs are arranged in the form of pyramid. If the top row, second
row and third row has 1, 3 and 5 logs respectively. Find the number of logs in
the 9th row of the pyramid.

9. (a) If α and β are complementary angles such that cos , Find the value of 2sinα
sinβ.
(b) Two points P and Q on a level ground are 18m apart. The angle of elevation of P
and Q from the top of the satellite is 350 and 540 respectively. Find the height of the
satellite from the ground level.

10. (a) A man is 4 times old as his son. In 4 years later, the product of their ages will be
520. Find the son’s present age.
(b) If the two sides of trapezium are (x + 1) cm and (x + 5) cm and the perpendicular distance
between the two parallel sides is (x - 1) cm. If the area of the figure is 12 square
centimeters, find the possible value of x.

SECTION B (40 Marks)

11. (a) The table below shows the distribution of scores of 45 students in a physical
examination.

i) Draw the histogram and find the mark scored by many students.
ii) Find the median class of score
iii) Find the mean score
iv) Draw the cumulative frequency curve and determine from it the median
score.
(b) In the figure below, O is the center of the circle. 𝐴𝑂̂ 𝐵 = 120° and 𝐶𝐷
̂ 𝐵 = 15°
find value of 𝑋

12. (a) A and B are two points on latitude 70°N. Their longitudes are 62°W and
118°E respectively. Calculate the distance in kilometers from A to B if the Earth's
diameter is 12800km for the following cases.
i) Along a great circle route over North pole
ii) Along a parallel of latitude
(b) VABCD is a rectangle pyramid in which AB=3cm and BC=2cm. V is a point such
that VA=VB=VC=VD=6cm and AO=OC. Find
i) The angle VAD
ii) The length of AC
iii) The angle between VA and plane ABCD
13.a) Use the inverse of matrix to solve the following system of equations.
2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 12; 3𝑥 = 7 + 𝑦

14. (a) The function F(x) is defined as f(x) = -x2 – 2x – 3
(i) What is the line of symmetry?
(ii) Find the minimum or maximum point.
(iii)Sketch the graph of the function f(x)
(b) A small industry makes two types of clothes namely type A and type B. Each type
A takes 3 hours to produce and uses 6metres of material and each type B takes 6 hours
to produce and uses 7metres of material. The workers can work for a total of 60 hours
and there is 90 meters of material available. If the profit on a type A cloth is 4,000
shillings and on a type B is 6,000 shillings, find how many of each type should be
made for maximum profit.
