ECN-203: Signals and Systems

Quiz-1
Total marks: 15, Duration: 40 minutes
Please read the instructions carefully:

There are total 5 questions. Please attempt all questions. Provide detailed answers to get full marks.
An A4 sheet is provided for the rough work. Do not detach the rough sheet from the answersheet.

Write your answers only in the space provided below the questions.

Maintain academic honesty at all times. The solutions you submit must be your own.

1. (2 marks) Consider a linear and time-invariant (LTI) system which generates the output signal y1 (t)
corresponding to input signal x1 (t), as shown in Figure 1. Find and sketch the output of the same
system, when the signal x2 (t) as shown in Figure 2, is applied as input.

2. (2 marks) The step response of any LTI system is defined as the output signal generated when the unit
step u[n] is applied as the input. Provide proof/arguments to show that for any discrete-time causal
LTI system, its step response is zero for time instances n < 0.

3. (3 marks) Determine whether the following statements are true/false and justify your answer. If a
statement is false, you may justify the answer by providing a proper reason or a negative/counter
example.

(a) The inverse of any causal LTI system is always non-causal.

(b) If impulse response of an LTI system is an even signal, the system output is always even for any
applied input.
(c) The system described by the relation y(t) = x(sin(t)) for input x(t) and output y(t), is time-
variant.

shown in Figure 5.

(a) What is the impulse response h[n] of this system?

(b) Determine if this system is memoryless/with memory, causal/non-causal and BIBO-stable/unstable.
Justify/explain your answers.
(c) Find the impulse-response of the inverse system associated with the given system.
