SOLIDWORKS DESIGN AND MODELING

Course Objectives: To enable the students to:

1. Understand the basics of SolidWorks and its interface.


2. Gain proficiency in sketching and creating various 3D features.
3. Acquire knowledge about part modeling, assembly modeling, and drawing creation.
4. Understand advanced modeling techniques like sheet metal and weldments.
5. Learn to apply different SolidWorks tools for efficient and accurate design.

Course Content:

UNIT I: INTRODUCTION TO SOLIDWORKS 9

Overview of CAD (Computer-Aided Design),Introduction to SolidWorks: Interface, Menus,


and Toolbars,Creating a New Part, Assembly, and Drawing,Basic Operations: Opening,
Saving, and Closing Files,SolidWorks Products Overview: Standard, Professional, Premium,
Simulation, Electrical, PDM

UNIT II: SKETCHING AND SKETCH TOOLS 9

Sketch Entities: Lines, Circles, Arcs, Polygons, Splines, and Ellipses,Sketch Tools: Trim,
Extend, Offset, Mirror, and Block,Applying Relations: Horizontal, Vertical, Coincident,
Tangent, etc..Dimensioning Techniques: Smart Dimension, Driven Dimensions, and
Dimension Modifiers

UNIT III: PART MODELING 9

Introduction to Part Modeling,Creating Basic Features: Extrude, Revolve, Sweep,


Loft,Creating Reference Geometry: Planes, Axes, Points,Advanced Features: Fillet, Chamfer,
Shell, Rib, Pattern, Fastening Features,Creating Curves and Reference Points

UNIT IV: ASSEMBLY MODELING 9

Introduction to Assembly Environment,Inserting and Managing Components,Applying Mates


and Constraints,Assembly Modeling Approaches: Bottom-Up, Top-Down, Hybrid,Exploded
Views and Assembly Animations

UNIT V: ADVANCED MODELING TECHNIQUES 9

Introduction to Sheet Metal: Base Flange, Edge Flange, Bends, and Forming
Tools,Introduction to Weldments: Structural Members, Weld Beads, and Gussets,

TOTAL LECTURE PERIODS: 45 Periods


Expected Course Outcome: At the end of this course, the students will be able to:

 Navigate and utilize the SolidWorks interface for various design tasks.
 Create and modify sketches and apply dimensions and relations.
 Model complex parts using a variety of SolidWorks features.
 Assemble parts into a functional assembly and create assembly drawings.
 Apply advanced modeling techniques for sheet metal and weldments, and understand
CNC machining basics.
