INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

In this generation, suicide remains one of the global health issues, particularly
among students, whose rates have been rapidly increasing in the last few years. Many
different situations and thoughts might give rise to suicidal thoughts and
behaviors. These health concern is not only in some nations but it is globally
experienced by many teenagers in this days. According to the World Health
Organization (2019) over 77% of all suicides globally take place in low- and middle-
income countries. This has caused depression and death in a large number of people
globally. The World Health Organization (2018) also states that suicide is the second
greatest cause of death worldwide for individuals aged 15 to 29 and is a problem that
lasts a lifetime.

Anxiety and depression are common mental health conditions that frequently
coexist and can have a significant impact on a person's ability to think, feel
emotionally, and behave. The World Health Organization (WHO) report states that, an
estimated 154 million individuals are impacted in the Philippines by
depression.Depression can occur to anybody at any point in their life, and it is
estimated that Compared to men, women are 1.5 times more likely to suffer it. The
majority of those with depression—more than half—are from the regions of Southeast
Asia and the Western Pacific. Depression is associated with several risk factors, such
as sickness, life events, unemployment, low education, and poverty. Additionally,
students who are dealing with social constraints, academic pressures, and transitional
difficulties may be especially susceptible to the detrimental effects of depression and
anxiety on their perceptions of suicide.

The purpose of these study is to determine how students perceptions of suicide

relate to depression and anxiety. The study is intended to give information on how
phsychological mechanism and offer clearer insights into how mental health
variables influence their beliefs toward suicide.

The authorities of mental health and education notice the influence of

depression and anxiety on students attitudes toward suicide. They frequently
emphasize how crucial is the treatment regarding about mental health concerns in the

educational environment so that it is likely to reduce suicidal thoughts and action
among the students specially to those who frequently experience it. According to a
study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders by Cha et al. (2018), the higher
the level of the students depression and anxiety is significantly related in the negative
views about suicide. The authorities also highlight that it is very important that very
students should have mental heath support. This research is important as this will
provide data on how students perception about suicide interact with depression and
anxiety. The results of our study may also help lessen issues associated with mental
health issues. In the end, the research may contribute to the development of student
mental health and suicide prevention initiatives, which would improve general
educational and societal outcomes. While previous research may have shown links
between mental health conditions and attitudes toward suicide, there may still be
unanswered questions about the underlying mechanisms . Furthermore, there might
not be as much study on particular cultural contexts or demographic groups, which
emphasizes the need for more inclusive and diverse studies in this area. Filling in
these gaps could result in more focused and successful promotion strategies.

Our goal in conducting this study is to determine how students' perceptions of suicide
are influenced by their degrees of anxiety and depression using a quantitative research
design. We will measure participants' anxiety and depression by conducting a survey
providing a questionnaire. The Stress-Diathesis Model serves as the theoretical
framework for this study. This concept shapes peoples different views to mental
health conditions like depression and anxiety.postulates that people differ in their
susceptibility (diathesis) to mental health conditions like anxiety and depression,
which interact with external stresses to affect psychological consequences like
suicidal thoughts and actions (Robillard et al., 2021).By grounding our study in the
Stress-Diathesis Model, we aim to investigate how students' pre-existing vulnerability
to depression and anxiety interacts with stressors in the academic and social
environment to shape their perceptions of suicide. With this method, we can
investigate the intricate interactions between personal characteristics and contextual
elements to comprehend students' perspectives on suicide.

Statement of the problem

Researchers wants to determine the connection of depression and anxiety to

the perception of the students about suicide. And answer the following questions:

● How do depression and anxiety levels affects the students perception of suicide?

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the methods used in the conduct of the study, it
describes and tackled the research design and data gathering procedure.

Research Design

This research project makes use of quantitative research design which is the
blueprint of the study, utilizing surveys or questionnaires to gather data. This
quantitative research design would be appropriate because it will allow us to collect
numerical data for our research, using this research design researchers can easily test
the connection by reaching those valid conclusions and relationships between
independent and dependent variables and can easily make those results valid and
supported.

Methods and Sources

Data are collected through surveys administered to the students, by provinf

series of question assessing their perception about suicide. The participant of our

study is the grade 9 SSC studying in the municipality of Almeria. In these study we

used random sampling in selecting our participant, these will ensure that the data that

will be gathered will not be biased and will be accurate. The tools for our data

collection includes questionnaires for addressing the students perception about

suicide. Data reliability and quality will be ensured through the use of validated

questionnaires and and all efforts will be made to estabish a connection with the

participants so that they’ll be encourage to answer honestly and accurately and by

using statistical analyses will be used to assess the reliability and consistancy of our

collected data. Researchers will Use T-test to as a statistical tool in analyzing the

data . This statistical tool will help the researchers to compare the two groups, the

group of students with high depression and anxiety level with their perception of

suicide and the group of students with a lower depression and anxiety level with their

perception of suicide and by using this statistical tool researchers will be able to

determine if the depression and anxiety levels will affect to the students percention of

suicide.

Practical Consideration

The researchers might experience bias and sample size issues since we are

only dealing in a small sample of a population. Researchers might also experience

some ethical issues like confidentiality since most of the participant want their

information to be in private. By having a proper consent to them and considering their

private information and using ramdom sapling the participant will now have equal

chances of being selected.Additionally these research is only intended to determine

the effect of depression and anxiety on students perception of suicide focusing also to

the research question. Furthermore using the the best data collection method

researchers will have valid results.
