11I Capacity 673

Example 13 Converting cm3 to litres

Find the capacity of this container, in litres.

10 cm
20 cm

SOLUTION EXPLANATION
V = 20 × 10 × 10 V = lwh
= 2000 cm3 1 cm3 = 1 mL
= 2000 mL There are 1000 mL in 1 litre.
= 2000 ÷ 1000 L
= 2L

Now you try

10 A dose of 12 mL of medicine is to be taken twice each day from a 0.36 L bottle. How many days will it
take to finish the medicine?

11 A gas bottle contains 50 L of liquid gas. If the liquid gas is used at a

rate of 20 mL per minute, how many hours will the gas bottle last?

12 A city’s dams have 2 million megalitres of water and the average daily
consumption of the city’s people is 400 L per day per person. If the
city’s population is 5 million people, how long will the dam supply last
without further water catchment?

REASONING 13 13 13, 14

13 If x is any number, then x litres is the same as 1000 × x = 1000x millilitres because there are 1000 mL
in 1 L. Write expressions for x L in the following units.
a cm3 b m3 c kL d ML

14 a A rectangular prism has length l cm, width w cm and height h cm. Write an expression for the
capacity of the container measured in:
