Chapter 2 – Operating System

Expected Knowledge from Students:


The student must already be aware of:

 various hardware devices of a computer
 different software of a computer

Learning Outcomes:
After going through the chapter, the student must be able to explain about:
 User Interface
 Introduction to Windows 10
 Desktop and its Components
 Basic Desktop Operations

 Make the students recall about computer system
 Make the students recall the different hardware and software devices.
 Make the students recall the about the screen they see when they start computer.

 To learn about user interface and its types
 To learn about Windows 10 and its features

Teaching Method
 Recall with the students that a computer system has all the required hardware and software to
make it functional for a user.
 Make the students understand that like your teacher manages the entire class, so as an operating
system also manages the functioning of the computer.
 Tell them that operating system allows the computer hardware to interact with the computer
software to perform tasks.
 Sensitize the students about User Interface that it is like a bridge that connect user to the
computer to complete a task efficiently.
 Explain them about some common User Interface (UI) like:
o Command Line Interface
o Voice User Interface
o Graphical User Interface
 Discuss some of the benefits of GUI with the students.
 Give them some examples of OS that have GUI.
 Introduce the students to Windows 10 operating system and tell them that this uses WIMP
(Windows, Icons, Menus, Pointers) features.
 Familiarise the students with the key features of Windows 10 such as:
o Microsoft Edge
o Cortana
o Start Menu
o Easy to use
o Task View
 Encourage the students to complete Activity given on page 25 of the textbook.
 Share with the students the Brainy Fact that
o In 1981, Lan Kay, Douglas Engelbart, and a group of other researchers developed the
GUI at Xerox PARC. Apple introduced the Lisa computer, in 1983 which was one of
the first personal computers to offer a GUI.
 Recap with the students the topics covered in the class.

Note to the Teacher:


 Explain the meaning of the user interface to the students.
 There are many versions of Windows. Tell the features of all the versions to students.

 To know the different icons and buttons
present on desktop
Teaching Method
 Recapitulate with the students about the User Interface and Introduction to Windows 10 as done
previously.
 Make the students aware about Desktop which is the first screen that appears when a computer
is turned on.
 Tell the students that a desktop contains various icons and buttons like:
o This PC
o Recycle Bin
o Start button
o Taskbar
 Explain in detail about the above-mentioned components one by one to the students that Icons
are graphical representations of files, folders, or programs which enable us to open these.
 Show, explain and demonstrate to the students about the icons present on desktop like:
o This PC icon which opens a window enabling to navigate through the different
computer drives such as C: drive, D: drive, etc.
o Recycle Bin that allows us to restore temporarily deleted files or folders to the
same locations from where those were deleted.
 Encourage the students to complete the Answer This activity given on Page 27 of the textbook.
 Make the students know about the horizontal bar which is present at the bottom of the Desktop
is known as Taskbar.
 Show, explain and demonstrate them the Taskbar and tell them that it contains the following:
o Start button
o Notification area
o Show Desktop button
o Open and Pinned Applications
 Share with the students about the Smart Path fact like:
o Once we delete all files from the Recycle Bin, they cannot be restored as the files
get permanently deleted.
 Share with the students about the Quick Point tip like:
o We can open the Start menu by pressing the Windows key present on the keyboard.
 Recap with the students the topics covered in the class.

Teaching Method
 Recapitulate with the students about various desktop components done in previous class.
 Discuss with the students that we should arrange and organize the files and folders present on
the Desktop on the regular basis.
 Tell the students about some basic desktop operations such as:
o Selecting and Deselecting Icons
o Selecting Multiple Icons
o Opening a Program
o Arranging Desktop Icons
o Sorting Icons
 Show, explain and demonstrate them the steps to Select the Icon by just clicking on the icon and
Deselect Icon by clicking anywhere on the Desktop.
 Show, explain and demonstrate to the students about:
o the steps to select multiple adjacent icons
o the steps to select multiple non-adjacent icons
o the steps to Open a Program
 Encourage the students to complete the Activity given on Page 29 of the textbook.
 Make the students know about organising and arranging the scattered icons on the Desktop.
 Show them the steps to Arrange Desktop Icons.
 Tell the students that the Desktop Icons can be sorted on the basis of name, date, item type, and
date modified.
 Explain and demonstrate the steps to sort desktop icons to the students.
 Share with the students about the Quick Point tip like:
o To select all the icons on the Desktop, press Ctrl + A.
 Share with the students about the Smart Path fact like:
o You can also open a program in the following methods:
- Click on the required icon on the desktop and press the Enter key. The application
window opens.
- Double-click on the required icon going on. The application window opens.
 Share with the students about the Brainy Fact like:
o Once you enable the Auto arrange icons feature, Windows does not let you place
an icon randomly on the Desktop.
 Recap with the students the topics covered in the class.

 Explain to the students about the wallpaper as the background image of the desktop.
 Show and demonstrate to the students about the steps to change the background of the desktop.
 Explain to the students about the screen saver.
 Show and demonstrate to the students about the steps to change the screen saver of the desktop.
 Explain to the students about the lock screen.
 Show and demonstrate to the students about the steps to change the lock screen of the desktop.
 Share with the students about the Smart Path fact like:
o Apart from the available background options, we can choose a picture from our
computers, also by clicking on the Browse button.
o In case any program is left open when shutting down the computer, a prompt
message appears on the screen.
 Encourage the students to complete the Activity given on Page 34 of the textbook.
 Recap with the students the topics covered in the class.
 Make the students read the Word Glossary and Let’s Go Over sections to revive the topics
discussed in the chapter.
Note to the Teacher:
 Show the difference among wallpaper, screensaver, and lock screen.
