ASSIGNMENT 1 : PROJECT PLANNING REPORT

ASSIGNMENT OUTCOMES:

To construct a project planning proposal using fundamental techniques in the construction


project management field. (CLO 2)

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS:

1. This assignment is to be done in a group of a maximum of 3 students.


2. All submissions must be in ENGLISH.
3. Delay in submission shall be treated as NON-SUBMISSION.

THE TASK:

“Gantt charts show the schedules interspersed on a timeline, while precedence diagrams use
network diagrams to show a project's tasks and how they connect. Both planning techniques
show who is responsible for scheduled activities for the proposed construction project”. Based
on the above statement, explain the application of Gantt chart and precedence diagram for
project planning, and how both diagrams differ from each other.

Table below shows 10 activities as a project planning proposal to show the project activities
sequences of the a single storey Student Center in UiTM Kota Samarahan Campus 2, Sarawak.
The project start date on the 1st April 2024.

Based on the information above, as the construction project manager, prepare the followings:

i) Construct manually (handwritten), for each of the project planning calculation


“precedence diagram” for each of the activities listed.

ii) Application of Microsoft Project software for each listed activity by using the Gantt
chart and precedence diagram technique.

ii) The project completion time.

iii) The critical activities.

iv) The total float for each listed activity.

v) Discuss on the challenges in the utilization of project management software in the


construction project.

REPORT REQUIREMENTS

Kindly note that the report must be prepared and compiled in PDF file format in Times New
Roman (12 font) 1.5 spacing and must be in a numbering system. The hardcopy report is to be
submitted to your respective lecturer. Make sure that your report follows the rubrics given
below.

WRITTEN REPORT ASSIGNMENT (100 marks) – Reduce to 35%

1. Introduction = 5 marks
2. Definition of Gantt Chart and Precedence diagram = 10 marks
3. Project planning calculation (Hand written) = 25 marks
4. Microsoft Project Software application = 20 marks
5. Discussion for items (ii-v) = 15 marks
6. Conclusion = 5 marks
7. References = 5 marks
8. Organisation of report = 10 marks
9. Peer assessment (Individual marks) = 5 marks

Total = 100 marks

1. Introduction = 5 marks

a. Exemplary – 5 : Insightful introduction on the purpose of the project report, with


examples.
b. Excellent – 4 : Insightful introduction on the purpose of the project report.
c. Good – 3 : Clearly introduced the purpose of the project report.
d. Average – 2 : Project report is introduced and somewhat introduced.
e. Poor – 1 : Project report is introduced and somewhat irrelevant.
f. Very Poor – 0 : No introduction.

2. Definition Gantt Chart and Precedence diagram = 10 marks

a. Exemplary – 9-10 : Insightful definition on the topics, with examples of current


issues.
b. Excellent – 7-8 : Insightful definition on the overview of the topics.
c. Good – 5-6 : Clear definition on the overview of the topics.
d. Average – 3-4 : Definition on the topics is introduced and somewhat introduced.
e. Poor – 1-2 : Definition on the topics introduced and somewhat is irrelevant.
f. Very Poor – 0 : No definition on the topics.

3. Project planning calculation (Hand written) = 20 marks. Compulsory for each


group members to submit the answer.

a. Excellent – 17 - 20 : All 10 activities and all calculations are correct.


b. Good – 13 - 16 : 8 - 9 activities and/or 3 calculations are correct.
c. Average – 9 - 12 : 6 – 7 activities and/or 2 calculations are correct.
d. Satisfy – 5 - 8 : 4 – 5 activities and 1 calculations are correct.
e. Poor – 1 - 4 : 1 – 3 activities are correct.
f. Non-compliance – 0 : No project planning are constructed and no calculation.

4. Microsoft Project Software application (Gantt Chart & Precedence Diagram) =


30 marks

a. Excellent – 25 - 30 : All 10 activities and all calculation are correct application in


the software.
b. Good – 20 - 24 : 8 - 9 activities and/or 3 calculation are correct application in
the software.
c. Average – 15 - 19 : 6 – 7 activities and/or 2 calculations are correct application in
the software.
d. Satisfy – 10 - 14 : 4 – 5 activities and 1 calculations are correct application in the
software.
e. Poor – 1 - 9 : 1 – 3 activities are correct application in the software.
f. Non-compliance – 0 : No project planning are implementation in the project
management software.

5. Discussion = 10 marks

a. Exemplary – 9-10 : Discussion all the key contents are presented outstandingly
clear, effective and a logical. Smooth flow of ideas and expression with no errors.
b. Excellent – 7-8 : Discussion all the key contents are excellent presented effective
and logical but not in logical manner.
c. Good – 5-6 : Discussion all the key contents are good presented but not in login
manner.
d. Average – 3-4 : Discussion all the key contents are moderate presented but not in
logical manner.
e. Poor – 1-2 : Discussion is poor all the key contents but not clearly reflected.
f. Very Poor – 0 : No appropriate discussion was made.

6. Conclusion = 5 marks

a. Exemplary – 5 : Conclusion is presented outstandingly clear, and demonstrated the


ability to relate to the whole work to course outcome.
b. Excellent – 4 : Conclusion is presented clearly, and demonstrated the ability to
relate to the introduction part of the work.
c. Good – 3 : Conclusion is presented clearly.
d. Average – 2 : Conclusion is moderately presented.
e. Poor – 1 : Conclusion is irrelevant.
f. Very Poor – 0 : No conclusion is presented.
