Câu điều kiện là gì?
Câu điều kiện (Conditional sentences) là dạng câu dùng để diễn đạt một sự việc sẽ xảy ra
khi có một điều kiện cụ thể xảy ra.
Ví dụ: "If it rains, the picnic will be cancelled (Nếu trời mưa, chuyến dã ngoại sẽ bị hủy
bỏ)".
Trong đó, mệnh đề phụ (còn được gọi là mệnh đề if) diễn đạt điều kiện, còn mệnh đề
chính diễn đạt kết quả (result).
Các loại câu điều kiện
Có 4 loại câu điều kiện phân chia theo 0, 1, 2, 3 và một số dạng biến thể khác (tổng là 6).
Thường mệnh đề if sẽ đứng trước và phân cách hai mệnh đề bằng dấu phẩy. Nhưng nếu
đổi chỗ hai mệnh đề thì không cần dấu phẩy.
Ví dụ: I will buy this bag for you if you help me to do my homework (Tôi sẽ mua cái cặp
này cho bạn nếu bạn giúp tôi làm bài tập về nhà).
1. Câu điều kiện loại 0
“Zero conditional – Câu điều kiện Loại 0” - câu điều kiện luôn có thật ở Hiện tại
Ex.: If I have much time, I spend a day talking with you about what love is.
2. Câu điều kiện loại 1
Câu điều kiện loại I còn được gọi là câu điều kiện có thực ở hiện tại. Điều kiện có thể
xảy ra ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai.
If + S + V1, S + will / may / can (not) + V0

If clause main clause

Ex: If I have the money, I will buy a Ferrari.

3. Câu điều kiện loại 2
Câu điều kiện loại II là câu điều kiện trái với thực tế ở hiện tại.
If + S + V2, S + would / could (not) + V0

If clause main clause

Ex: If I had a million dollars, I would buy a Ferrari.

LƯU Ý: trong câu điều kiện loại II, nếu động từ của mệnh đề điều kiện là “to be” thì luôn
chia quá khứ số nhiều “were”, không cần biết chủ ngữ là số ít hay số nhiều.

Trường hợp khác của câu điều kiện

Trong câu điều kiện loại 0, I và II, chúng ta có thể sử dụng một số từ, cụm từ như so/as
long as, when, provided/providing that, in case, unless… để thay thế cho if.
1. Unless
Unless được sử dụng để diễn tả một điều kiện phủ định, nó mang nghĩa tương đương với
if… not.
Ví dụ: Unless I work hard, I will fail this exam. (Trừ khi tôi học hành chăm chỉ, tôi sẽ
trượt bài thi này.)
= If I don’t work hard, I will fail this exam.
2. So/as long as & provided/providing that
Những cụm từ này có thể được dùng thay thế cho if để nhấn mạnh điều kiện được nhắc
đến.
Ví dụ: My brother’s mistake won’t be discovered as long as nobody tells him. (Sai lầm
của em trai tôi sẽ không bị phát hiện chừng nào không ai nói cho nó biết.)
= My brother’s mistake won’t be discovered if nobody tells him.
3. Or/ otherwise
Or và otherwise được sử dụng để diễn tả một kết quả có khả năng cao sẽ xảy ra nếu điều
kiện được đưa ra không được thực hiện. Tuy nhiên, or và otherwise được dùng trước
mệnh đề kết quả chứ không không thay thế cho if ở mệnh đề điều kiện.
Ví dụ: Hurry up or you will be late for school. (Nhanh lên nếu không bạn sẽ bị muộn học
đấy.)
= If you don’t hurry up, you will be late for school.
4. When & as soon as
When và as soon as có thể được dùng để thay thế if để diễn tả điều kiện có nhiều khả
năng sẽ xảy ra.
Ví dụ: I will take you to school as soon as I finish my work. (Tôi sẽ đưa bạn đến trường
ngay sau khi tôi hoàn thành công việc của mình.)
5. In case
Chúng ta có thể thay thế if bằng in case để diễn tả sự phòng tránh một tình huống có thể
xảy ra. Tuy nhiên, in case không thường đứng đầu câu khi được dùng để diễn đạt một
điều kiện.
Ví dụ: You should call your parents in case there are any problems. (Bạn nên gọi cho bố
mẹ nếu có bất kỳ vấn đề gì xảy ra.)
6. Without: không có – sử dụng trong trường hợp giả định mệnh đề chính sẽ thay đổi
như thế nào nếu không có điều kiện.
Ví dụ: Without water, life wouldn't exist.
=> If there were no water, life wouldn't exist.
