Hedgehog in the Fog

“Hedgehog in the Fog” is a Soviet cartoon about a little hedgehog that is making his

way through a scary wood carrying a bag of sweets for his friend’s bear cub, unknowingly

stalked by an owl. Continuing he sees, a white horse standing in a fog and gets concerned

about it. Thereafter the fog becomes the main part of the plot, revealing and hiding several

characters that amaze, help, or alarm him (Norstein, 2011). Hedgehog gets attracted to a large

tree, and he loses his sweets, only to have them returned to him by a dog. It accidentally slips

into a stream, is saved from drowning by a fish, and finds its friend the bear who fusses as to

his whereabouts. The film ends whereby the hedgehog in deep thought about everything that

had happened.

The film has dormant particular colors, allowing one to do one super creative thing of

telling the story through color. Different colors in the film “Hedgehog in the fog” influence

different moods and carry the audience’s attention as described in the film by the use of black

and white colors indicating suspense (Norstein, 2011). Recently it was discovered that certain

colors in the right context could enhance memory. In addition, high street and online shops to

increase sales by enhancing positive moods across a wide range have used it.

Lighting in this film is the most critical aspect because it allows setting the mood of

the film. Lighting also has been used to add color and texture to otherwise bland

environments and scenes. It also communicates the mood and atmosphere of the film helping

the audience receive context clues about the scenes and plot line of a play. In the film, light is

used when the Hedgehog is attacked by Bats frightening him to such an extent it runs to save

his life (Norstein, 2011).

The mysterious cartoon is full of mysticism and hidden meaning such as you should

not run away from the things that frighten you because you are taking your fear with you. The

fog symbolizes another world full of fantastic creatures. According to Norstein (2011), the

owl chasing the Hedgehog is a symbol of evil forces, and the dog that returned the sweets to

the Hedgehog is a symbol of goodness Bats also symbolize evil, and a sad white horse

personifies death. Audiences with developed imaginations see Hedgehog’s path to the

afterlife along the river that carries him.

The setting is the time and place of a film story. They also help to understand a

character’s view through how they think about their surrounding environment. It also

provides the audiences with the context of the time, place, and environment in that the film

takes place. It can be described by weather, clothing, and culture. This film is filmed in a

forestry or bushy area also the weather is foggy. Setting is written into the slug line of a

scene heading.

The soviet animation Yuri Norstein created a mesmerizing tale of friendship and fear

that seems real and relatable to both adults and children. It also teaches us that you should go

where you want to be. If you have, a goal goes for it no matter the consequences hindering

you on the way. Never turn back from the direction you have come from. ’Hedgehog in the

fog’ is an epic way through the dark forest of life.’
