Lesson 3.2A
Solving Quadratic
Equations by
EXTRACTING
SQUARE ROOTS
Solution- it is a value
of a variable that
makes the given
quadratic equation
true.
Square root- is an
inverse method of
squaring a number.
Square root of a
number is a value,
which is obtained on
multiplication by
itself, gives the
original number.

Squaring a Number
(Perfect Square)

1 =1 6 =36
2 2
2 =4 7 =49
2 2
3 =9 8 =64
2 2
4 =16 9 = 81
2 2
5 =25 10 =100
2 2
11 =121 16 =256
2 2
12 = 144 17 =289
2 2
13 =169 18 =324
2 2
14 =196 19 = 361
2 2
15 = 225 20 =400
Square root of a number.

= ±1 = ±5√ 25

√4

= ±2 = ±6√ 36

√9

√ 400
Quadratic equations that
can be written in the
2 2
form x = c / x – c=0 can
be solved by applying
extracting Square Root
2
x = 25
2
a - 81 = 0
Examples:
2
1) x = 49
2
2) x -100 =0
2
3) 2b = 50
2
4) 3c = 12
2
5) (x-2) = 121
2
6) (a+1) = 36
2
7) x = 8
2
8) a = 27
Direction: Solve the following
quadratic equations by extracting
square roots.
2 2
1. x = 16 5. (x-4) =169
2
2. x –144=0
2
3. 2a =100
2
4. x = 20
2
3x + 18x =0
Note: When the constant
is 0, the quadratic
equation will be of form
2
ax +bx =0
Examples:
2
1) 3x +18x =0
2
2) 4x -2x =0
Solve the equation
without factoring,
Instead, use the fact that
2
the roots of ax + bx =0
are x=0 and x = .

Factoring may also be used

to solve a quadratic
equation when none of
the constants a, b, or c is
0.
1. Zero Product
Property –
If the product of
two real numbers is
zero, then either of the
two is equal to zero or
both numbers are equal
to zero.
If ab=0, then either a=0
or b= 0, or both a and b
are 0.
Factoring Method
a. Transform the quadratic
equation into standard
form if necessary.
b. Factor the left-hand side
of the equation.
c. Set all factor equal to
zero using the Principle
of Zero Products.
d. Solve each resulting
linear equation.
Examples:
2
1) x +9x = -8
2
2) x +10x +16=0
2
3) 2x -5x -3
2
ax +bx +c=0
(x+m)(x+n)=0
2
ax +bx +c=0
(m+n) (m·n)
