Community-Based Participatory
Research (CBPR)
BENEFITS OF
COMMUNITY ENGAGED RESEARCH
Helps to develop research questions concerning health issues of concern to the
community
Help in recruiting participants - people more likely to support the research and
researchers when they understand the purpose of the research and how the results
may affect them
Improves information gained through community input to produce appropriate,
culturally sensitive, accurate and valid opinions and information
Gives greater opportunity to build trust and respect between organizations and
communities. This may lead to a greater exchange of information where the
community itself has a voice

SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS OF
COMMUNITY-ENGAGED RESEARCH
COMMON METHODOLOGIES OF
COMMUNITY-ENGAGED RESEARCH
1. Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR)
CBPR is perhaps the most widely recognized methodology within CER. It
emphasizes equitable partnerships between researchers and community members
throughout the research process. CBPR involves collaborative decision-making,
shared ownership of the research process, and mutual benefit for all stakeholders.
2. Action Research
Action research involves a cyclical process of inquiry and action aimed at
addressing specific problems or issues identified by the communityResearchers
and community members work together to identify goals, implement interventions
or changesevaluate outcomesand make adjustments based on feedback.

3. Participatory Action Research (PAR)
PAR is similar to CBPR but places a stronger emphasis on collective action and
social change. It involves collaborative research with the goal of empowering
community members to identify and address social problems, advocate for
change, and participate in decision-making processes.
4. Community-Based Research (CBR)
CBR involves conducting research in partnership with communities to address
their priorities and concerns. It emphasizes building relationships, sharing power,
and producing knowledge that is relevant and applicable to the community's
context.

5. Service-Learning
Service-learning integrates community service with academic learning
objectives. It involves students working on projects or research in
collaboration with community partners, providing them with hands-on
experience while also benefiting the community.
6. Community-Engaged Participatory Research (CEPR)
CEPR combines elements of CBPR and participatory research methodologies
to involve community members as equal partners in the research process. It
emphasizes building trust, fostering dialogue, and promoting social justice.

7. Community-Driven Research (CDR)
This approach involves community members taking the lead in defining research
questions, designing studies, collecting and analyzing data, and disseminating
findings. Researchers act as facilitators or collaborators, supporting and
empowering the community throughout the research process.
