CHAPTER ONE

1.0 Introduction

1.1 Students Industrial work experience scheme

The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme is a skill development program designed to

prepare students of universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education for transition from the

college environment to work. It is a program in which students participate in work activities while

attending school. This work experience program gives students the opportunity to be part of an

actual work situation outside the School.

SIWES is a cooperative industrial internship program that involves institutions of higher learning,

industries/Organization, Federal government of Nigeria, Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Nigerian

Universities Commission (NUC) and NBTE/NCCE in Nigeria, It was established in 1971 but

commenced in 1973 after a joint research with the aim of making education more relevant and to

bridge the yawning gap between the theory and practice of engineering, technology, and science-

related disciplines and to solve the problem of lack of adequate practical skills in preparation for

future employment in industries by Nigerian graduate in tertiary institutions.

1.2 Contribution of the scheme

It is obvious that the scheme is making a great impact on the economic and technological

development of the country on the human resource development. Some of the contributions of the

scheme are:

● Improving the quality of skilled manpower in Nigeria.

● Establishing greater ties between institutions and industries.

● Preparing students to fit in employment in the industries.

1
● Offering an opportunity for students to interact with workers of various levels in the

industries.

3.0 EXPERIENCED GAINED

The experience achieved was based on the standards of full architectural practice from design, to

tender phase, through bidding and finally construction and project management.

However other niches were also tapped into such as;

● ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IDEAS AND DRAFTING SKILLS.

● CONSTRUCTION AND SITE SUPERVISION.

● INTERIOR DESIGN AND DECORATION/EXECUTION.

● 3D ARCHITECTURAL VISUALISATION.

● REMODELLING, ALTERATION AND RETROFITS.

● FURNITURE DESIGN, DETAILING AND FABRTICATION.

● MATERIALS, COMPONENTS, ACCESSORIES AND PROCUREMENT SYSTEM.

● CLIENT MANAGEMENT.

5
3.1 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN IDEAS AND DRAFTING SKILLS

During my Industrial Training session, I was exposed to series of Architectural design ideas which

improved my knowledge in Architecture as a multi-faceted course of study. Architectural design

process follows a schematic phase structure which includes conceptual design and architectural

detail drawing, an idea that takes the parts of a structure and turns them into a whole system

achieved by objectives and limitations. Through architecture and design, critical value is added to

projects that results to the built environment in Nigeria, Africa and the rest of the world.

I also participated in series of architectural drafting which helped improve my drafting and

modelling skills and techniques using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software like AutoCAD

and Sketch Up.

An Overview of some of my Architectural Drafting works include:

3.2 CONSTRUCTION AND SITE SUPERVISION

As part of the wealth of knowledge added to my experience during my Industrial Training session,

I was assigned to supervise a construction site where portable, demountable and transportable

buildings otherwise known as Portal Cabins where constructed. During my supervision period I

got to know the various processes involved in the construction of portal cabins which I was

oblivious of in the past. I also got to know the different materials used in the process of the

construction and had the opportunity to interact and relate with the various artisans on site.

SOME OF PROCESSES I WITNESSED DURING THE PORTAL CABIN

CONSTRUCTION INCLUDES:

● WELDING

● STEEL AND TIMBER CUTTING

● TIMBER CUTTING

● TIMBER NAILING AND GUMMING

● ELECTRICAL WIRING AND FITTINGS INSTALLATION

● PIPING AND SANITARY FITTINGS INSTALLATION

● FLOOR AND CEILING FINISHING

● ROOFING

● WINDOWS AND DOORS PLACEMENT

7
WELDING

Welding is a process that is used to join metal to metal by using electricity to create enough heat

to melt metal, and the melted metals when cool result in a binding of the metals.

STEEL AND TIMBER CUTTING

This is a process whereby steel and timber panels are been cut into different sizes. Electrically

powered Circular saw is the major tool used in this process.

8
3.3 INTERIOR DESIGN AND DECORATION/EXECUTION

One of the interesting aspect of my Industrial training session was Architectural Interior

design which is a process through which the interiors of buildings are designed, concerned

with all aspects of the human uses of structural spaces.

Interior Architectural design is the design of a space which has been created by structural

boundaries and the human interaction within these boundaries.

I learnt that there are various paths that one can take to become a professional interior designer.

All of these paths involve some form of training with a professional designer. Interior design

implies that there is more of an emphasis on planning, functional design and the effective use

of space, as compared to interior decorating.

Also, I acquired that interior decoration involves the arrangement of components and

accessories and comes after the initial interior design.

As a team we undertook projects that include arranging the basic layout of spaces within a

building as well as projects that require an understanding of technical issues such as window

9
and door positioning, acoustics, and lighting. Interior designers must be highly skilled in

order to create interior environments that are functional, safe, and adhere to building codes.

Some of factors I was taught to take into considerations in interior design

are:

● Space

● Windows And Doors Position

● Colour

● Funds

● Materials

● Lighting

● Ventilation

3.4 ARCHITECTURAL 3D VISUALISATION

3D visualization is basically referred to as the process by which graphical Architectural content is

created using 3D software. It is also known as rendering of Architectural of drawings.

Architectural visualization is a broad term that describes “seeing” architectural designs before

they are built. It encompasses everything from basic sketches to more sophisticated 3D renderings

11
and interactive virtual tours and enables the preparation photorealistic architectural visualisations

of interiors and building exteriors.

I learnt how to generate 3D drawings from 2D drawings which is mapped with the greatest of

precision and attention that allows the presentation of drawings in an incredibly detailed and

unique way.

Some of the example of such 3D visualization which I produced are:

Residential Building Exteriors

Residential Building Interiors

Architectural rendering, or Architectural illustration, is the art of creating two-dimensional

images or animations showing the attributes of a proposed Architectural design.

An Overview of some of my 3D Visualisation Include:

● Proposed HMG Group remodeling and alteration in Wuse II, Abuja.

● Conversion of residential building into an office building in Asokoro, Abuja.

12
3.5 REMODELLING, ALTERATION AND RETROFITS

Part of the knowledge I obtain during this quest is remodeling and alteration of buildings where

we updated existing buildings and transformed them to a new condition which encompassed

changes and rearrangement of structural parts, elements, and walls. Normal maintenance,

reroofing, painting or wallpapering, or changes to mechanical and electrical systems are not

considered alterations unless they affect a facility’s usability.

Projects that increase, expand, or extend a facility’s gross floor area or height of a facility are

considered alterations and must comply with the requirements of the standards applicable to new

construction. Existing elements and spaces affected by an addition are treated as alterations and

qualify for certain allowances or exceptions that are not permitted in new construction.

Combination of the two is considered to be a renovation, however the design of whatever addition
you do can be a difficult process. Because there is already an existing building, whatever you do
must complement what is there. That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to imitate the design of
the existing building, but any new addition needs to be professional.

Factors to Consider include:

● walls
● Doors and windows
● Floor and ceiling finishes
● Paint
● Roof
● Facades
● Fittings

3.6 FURNITURE DESIGN, DETAILING AND FABRICATION

Every new furniture design starts with a basic concept, or idea. In furniture design drawings are

created from various ideas using traditional and modern methods. Computer software can then be

used to create a more intricate and detailed design. Furniture can be a product of design and is

considered a form of decorative art.

14
During my quest, I learnt Furniture design which refers to designing movable objects intended

to support various human activities such as seating (e.g., chairs, stools, and sofas), eating (tables),

and sleeping (e.g., beds). Furniture is also used to hold objects at a convenient height for work (as

horizontal surfaces above the ground, such as tables and desks), or to store things (e.g., cupboards

and shelves). Furniture design is a specialized field where function and fashion collide.

Furniture is one of the most important aspects of an interior space. Pieces of furniture not only

add function and practicality to a space, but they also add style and personality. A furniture

designer is a professional that designs and creates different types of furniture. Each piece of

furniture that is created must serve a few different purposes and must be functional, practical,

comfortable, and attractive. Most furniture is made from a combination of wood and metal.

Furniture detailing has to do with providing all the necessary information needed to create a

custom piece of furniture component. This is where dimensioning, labelling and specification

comes to use. Furniture can be made from many materials, including metal, plastic, and wood.

I also witnessed Furniture fabrication which comes after design and detailing which is the

practice of assembling parts of a furniture component in a factory or other manufacturing site.

Furniture can be made using a variety of woodworking joints which involves cutting, nailing,

gumming and screwing and sometimes combination of two or more. It can be made from many

materials, including metal, plastic, and wood.

3.7 MATERIALS, COMPONENTS AND ACCESSORIES PROCUREMENT

SYSTEM.

In my Industrial Training process, I was taught that Procurement is the act of finding,

acquiring, buying goods, services or works from an external source.

The economic cost of building materials is what governs decision making about what materials to

use. Sometimes people take into consideration the high quality and durability of the materials.

16
Some materials may require more care than others, maintaining costs specific to some materials

may also influence the final decision. The cost of materials, quality and durability should be taken

into consideration during procurement.

The choice of procurement route is vitally important to the success of any construction project. It

is said that, 'if it must be done, it must be done well'.

An Overview of some of the Procurement I took part in:

● NIRSAL M.D’s OFFICE INTERIOR DESIGN Components and Accessories

Procurement.

● POTE GROUP OFFICE INTERIOR DESIGN Components and Accessories

Procurement.

● PORTAL CABIN Construction Materials Procurement.

3.8 CLIENTS MANAGEMENT

I was educated that a good working relationship between an architect and a client is crucial to the

success of any project.

Also, written agreements may contain the most important pieces of information about a project,

the process of deciding what will be in those agreements begins well before they are finally

17
drafted and signed. It is important to educate clients in understanding the architect's roles and

responsibilities on a typical project.

Furthermore, it is important that clients understand early that an architect is a professional

advisor. Educating a client about the scope and limit of the architect's role and responsibility may

help minimize erroneous assumptions and expectations.

In RAZARC DESIGNS, they are not only responsive and sympathetic with client’s objectivities,

but they are also flexible with regards to the form of contractual relationship they enter into with

their clients. The strong desire for client’s satisfaction provides an incentive, a compelling

disposition in undertaking project briefs, its execution especially when engaged on turnkey

project.

CHAPTER FOUR

4.0 CHALLENGES ENCOUNTED

4.1 MEETING UP WITH SUBMISSION DEADLINES

Time has been a quite challenging factor throughout my Industrial Training session.

18
Meeting up with submission deadlines was a herculean task as standards of excellence guiding

the firm must be maintained. As one still learning the profession, it took a lot out me, taught me

discipline, speed and accuracy

It is unquestionable that time has a significant influence in architecture as regarding service

delivery.

4.2 AQUINTANCE WITH CAD SOFTWARE (Sketch Up)

Adapting to the use of the sketch up software for modeling 3D drawings as regarding the tools,

commands and their application was far from the conventional AutoCAD software which I was

proficient in. It was a major challenge I faced as I had to learn and at the same time use it to carry

out the task I was assigned to do.

CHAPTER FIVE

5.0 SUMMARY

The student industrial work experience scheme SIWES is an essential platform that enhances the

development of professionals in Architecture.

19
My Industrial training was worth the while as it has helped me to appreciate Architecture as a

profession and broadened my knowledge and scope in and outside Architecture. The scheme has

improved my skills, abilities and interpersonal relationship as an Architect in the making.

The industrial training session has revealed to me the task that lies ahead of me in the Architectural

Field of practice I must testified that SIWES is a good means of acquiring knowledge, skills and

abilities for students in higher institutions and working with people in various establishment and

with different characters.
