what is requirement for inspection for propeller shaft

ChatGPT

Inspecting a propeller shaft is crucial for ensuring the reliability and safety of the vehicle or machinery it
is a part of. Here are the general requirements and steps involved in the inspection of a propeller shaft:

1. Visual Inspection:

 Check for Damage: Inspect the propeller shaft for any visible cracks, bends, or dents.

 Corrosion: Look for signs of rust or corrosion, particularly in areas exposed to the elements.

 Wear and Tear: Examine the universal joints (U-joints), splines, and yokes for excessive wear.

 Alignment: Ensure that the shaft is straight and properly aligned with the connected
components.

2. Functional Inspection:

 Rotational Play: Check for any excessive play or movement in the U-joints by moving the shaft
back and forth.

 Balancing: Verify that the propeller shaft is properly balanced to prevent vibrations during
operation.

 Lubrication: Ensure that all grease fittings are properly lubricated and check for any signs of
insufficient lubrication.

3. Measurement and Testing:

 Runout Measurement: Measure the radial and axial runout of the shaft to ensure it is within
acceptable limits.

 Vibration Analysis: Conduct a vibration analysis to detect any imbalances or misalignments.

 Endplay Measurement: Measure the endplay in the U-joints to ensure they are within
specification limits.

4. Component-Specific Checks:

 Universal Joints (U-joints): Check for any signs of looseness, wear, or damage. Ensure that the
bearings are free of wear and rotate smoothly.

 Slip Yoke: Inspect the slip yoke for wear and ensure it moves freely without excessive play.

 Center Support Bearing: If the propeller shaft has a center support bearing, inspect it for wear
or damage and ensure it is properly aligned.

5. Fasteners and Connections:

 Bolts and Nuts: Ensure all fasteners are properly torqued to the manufacturer’s specifications.

 Mounting Brackets: Check the condition and alignment of any mounting brackets or supports.
6. Testing Under Load:

 Operational Test: If possible, perform an operational test to observe the propeller shaft under
normal working conditions.

 Noise and Vibration: Listen for any unusual noises or vibrations during operation, which could
indicate issues with the shaft or connected components.

7. Documentation and Reporting:

 Record Findings: Document any findings from the inspection, including measurements,
observations, and any necessary repairs.

 Maintenance Records: Keep a detailed record of all inspections and maintenance performed on
the propeller shaft for future reference.

Safety Precautions:

 Always follow safety guidelines and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE)
during inspection.

 Ensure the vehicle or machinery is securely supported and cannot move during the inspection.

By adhering to these requirements, you can ensure that the propeller shaft remains in good working
condition and any potential issues are identified and addressed promptly.

1.7. Conduct NDT inspection of all pad eye welds. Record and submit test results
to V2X.

1.8. Weight test all installed pad-eyes to 4000 lbs or 150% of static load
expected on each pad eye. Record and submit the test results to V2X.

7.2. Unbolt the stuffing box or packing gland from the stern tube.

7.3. Fix a dial indicator to the tail shaft close to the mounting location of the seal assembly.

7.4. Place the pointer of the dial on the mounting flange or location where the seal will mount.

7.5. Place the pointer of the dial on the mounting flange or location where the seal will mount.

7.6. Check the run out or squareness of the face of the mounting flange. Readings should be taken
at eight equally spaced locations around the flange.
7.7. Record and submit these readings to V2X. The maximum dial reading is 0.020 inches. If a
reading is greater than this, contact your Kobelco Eagle representative to discuss the solution.

7.8. Inspect the Seal Housing, Repair / Replace as required.

7.9. Inspect shaft liner in area where new seal will be installed. Any grooves or problems should be
repaired.

7.10. Complete any machining required to mount the adapter plate. Discuss this step with your
Kobelco Eagle representative.

7.11. Provide a report of condition found and recommendations.

7.12. Stern tube is prepared for the un-coupling of the shaft and shaft removal.
Note 1: Proposal shall include Line-item pricing for the above section 7 scoped work.

8.4. Conduct visual inspection of CARB bearing, bearing nut, bearing housing and foundation.

8.4.1. Record precondition defects during visual inspection process. And illustrate all inspection
results to V2X project management.

Disengage bearing from shaft in preparation for shaft removal, follow guidance provided with
reference 244 SKF, 3044 Bearings (Line Shaft Bearing) and 244 SKF, Line Shaft Bearing (SNL30, 31
and 32, Plummer Block Housing).
CAUTION:
Do not disturb bearing foundation chock fast. If it is determined that the pillow block requires
replacement, chock fast replacement will be determined at that point.
8.5.1. Remove bearing locking nut and CARB roller bearing from shaft.
8.5.2. Conduct visual inspection of bearing adaptor sleeve, pillow block housing/cap, seals and shaft
immediate interface area.
