QUALITY IN-FOCUS

1. What is the ‘economic sense of designing better the manufacturing process to ensure
that quality products are created from the start’, according to Deming? Explain.
This means that products from manufacturing factories should release quality products from the start
which needs zero to minimal quality checking. This ensures that all the hard work and financial
resources put onto the product won’t go to waste which also ensures a higher profit due to minimal
cost of wasted resources. Through coming up with a better manufacturing design for the product, it
would lessen the appraisal costs.

2. Why is the philosophy of Deming easily accepted by the Japanese during that time?
Discuss it.
During the time that Deming was trying to voice out his theories to the world, Japan was completely
flatten out due to World War II by Allied Bombing Raids, even completely obliterating two cities,
Nagasaki and Hiroshima, using an atomic bomb. At this point, Japanese thought that the only way to
rise from the fall down that their country got after the war is to be global exporters of goods and other
resources that they have in their country and Deming’s theory seemed a great fit to their goal.

3. If you are Deming, other than Japan, where else can you offer your assistance in terms
of quality control? Defend your answer.
The Philippines would’ve also been a good place to offer assistance in terms of quality control since this
was during World War II where the Philippines is also one of the countries that was affected by the war.
It would greatly help Filipino entrepreneurs during that time to produce quality products and help
better export local products of great quality. It’s really saddening how our country imports goods that
were once us who’s the biggest exporter due to the declining quality of our products and the lack of
support from the government.

QUALITY CASE #3

1. Is the author correct in saying that there are faults in the design of the cup? Defend
your answer.
Yes, it does look fancy and it looks so extraordinary from the usual cups that we use on a daily basis but
the stylistic approach of the manufacturers to make the cup causes an inconvenience to those who
want to use the cup which doesn’t meet the standards for a quality product. We build products in
order to help our consumers to add convenience to their life and that’s why we have a target market
when it comes to making a product in order to know to whom we should market the products that we
make.

2. Have you ever experienced such kind of poorly designed cups in a coffee shop? How
did you handle the situation? Relate your experience.
I don’t really frequently go to coffee shops since I don’t really afford going to one and I haven’t really
seen any poorly designed cups throughout my life. I’ve only seen them through photos and I can say
that it’s really such an inconvenience, in general, to use poorly designed products.

3. What other products do you know that are designed poorly? What can you suggest to
correct it?
Most loose powder products sold by different brands are really designed so poorly that it really causes
such a mess whenever it is used. The product usually accumulates on the top part of the container,
causing the foundation applicator to have excessive amounts of the product. I would suggest that there
should be a film or anything that could keep all the product at the bottom of the container to lock all
the product on the bottom part of the container. This way, we can avoid it from getting messy or
having the applicator absorb excessive amounts of the product.
