NUMBER: 2.0/111
ISSUED: February 2010
REVISED:
PRODUCT: All
MODEL(S): All
Specifics: Units with Direct AC Start Systems Controlled by Frames
5 and 6 PowerFlex 700 VFD’s

SUBJECT: REQUIRED COOLING FAN WIRING SETUP FOR POWERFLEX 700

FRAMES 5 AND 6 VFD’S CONTROLING AC START MOTORS

Type of Change: Product Reliability

Recommended
Compliance: Information

Purpose:
To emphasize the need to wire the cooling fan correctly.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
When installing and connecting PowerFlex®700 variable frequency drives (VFD’s), Frame 5
and 6 models, it is important to observe the guidance provided on pages 1-8 and 1-9 of the
“Installation/Wiring” section of the user manual. Power to the cooling fan is provided by way of a
transformer with multiple taps. Selection of the correct tap is critical in providing an acceptable
voltage range to the cooling fan.

Failure to connect the fan properly can result in destruction of

the transformer, removal of power to the fan, under-cooling and,
ultimately, destruction of the VFD.

Pertinent information from the manual has been reiterated in the Action Required section below.

Failure to connect the transformer correctly will void the VFD warranty.

• Determine the type (AC or DC) and voltage of the power source to be controlled by the
VFD.
• Follow the instructions in Figures 1 through 5 (taken in excerpt from the user manual) on
the following pages.

Ensure all power is removed from the drive prior to servicing. Electri-
cal shock hazards, arc flash and/or arc blast hazards are present when
this equipment is energized.

Even with power removed from the drive, possibility of electrocution

still exists due to internally-stored energy. REFER TO THE MANUFAC-
TURER’S MANUAL FOR THIS DRIVE.

ELECTRICAL PROCEDURES DESCRIBED HEREIN SHOULD ONLY BE

ATTEMPTED BY TRAINED, QUALIFIED, AND AUTHORIZED PERSON-
NEL WITH APPROPRIATE CERTIFICATIONS.

Perform a Workplace Hazard Assessment and a Task Risk Assess-

ment before starting any work.

Perform a normal system shutdown, allow equipment to coast down to

a complete stop, and allow the post-lubrication cycle to automatically
stop.

Follow appropriate hazardous energy sources lock-out and tag-out

procedures for the entire turbomachinery package, ancillaries, and as-
sociated equipment.
