DOOR FAMILY - EXERCISE 1

1. Create a new Revit project using Default.rte template.

2. File -> New -> Family -> Select ‘Door.rft’ template.
3. You will see a wall and a few parameters already present in the
template (Fig 1). As the door is a wall-based family, a wall is
already available as reference only in the family template. The wall
will not be loaded in the project. 2
4. The frame projections are already modeled and related parameters
are provided. If you do not need them in your design, you may
delete them.
5. For this exercise, we will delete these frame projections. Go to a 3D
view -> select the frame projections and delete them.
6. Go to Family Types -> select the frame projection Ext and Frame
projection Int parameters and delete them as we do not need them.
7. Please note that the Width, Height parameters are already
provided in the template. We will use the same parameters for our
door.
DOOR FAMILY - EXERCISE 1
8. Let’s first create the frame of the door using Sweep tool.
9. Go to Ref. Level floor plan view -> Create tab -> Work Plane panel -> Set -> Pick a plane
-> Select the ref plane that is located in the center of the wall (Fig 1) -> Go to one of the
elevation views.
10. Create tab -> Forms panel -> Sweep -> Select Sketch Path option
11. Draw the path as shown in Fig 2. Using Align tool, align all the sides with the reference
planes and lock the alignment.
2

12. Mode panel -> Finish

13. Sweep panel -> Edit Profile -> Go to Floor plan: Ref. Level
14. Draw the profile of the door frame at the intersection of the reference plane where the red
dot is highlighted (Fig 3). (use 20mm dimensions for all sides).
15. Modify|Sweep > Edit Profile tab -> Mode panel -> Finish
16. Modify|Sweep -> Model panel -> Finish 3
17. Go to a 3D view to see your door frame.
DOOR FAMILY - EXERCISE 1
18. Now, let’s create a door panel using extrusion tool.
19. Go to Floor plan: Ref. Level -> Create tab -> Forms panel -> Extrusion
20. Draw a rectangle as shown in Fig 1 and lock all the alignment locks indicated -> Mode panel -
> Finish
21. Go to elevation view.
2
22. Modify -> Align -> Align the top of the extrusion with the inner side of the door frame and lock
the alignment (Fig 2).
23. Create tab -> Properties -> Family types -> Change the width and height parameters to see if
the geometry changes with the parameters.
24. Select the door frame -> properties palette -> Material parameter -> Select the Gray button
to associate a family parameter to it -> Create a new type parameter named ‘Door Frame’ ->
OK
25. Repeat the above step to add material parameter for the door panel.
26. Family types -> add material to the parameters and see if that change is reflected in the
model.
SYMBOLIC LINES- EXERCISE 1
27. Go to Floor Plan: Ref. Level -> Select the door panel ->
Modify|Extrusion tab -> Mode panel - > Visibility Settings ->
Remove the tick from Plan/RCP and When cut in Plan/RCP
28. You will notice that the door panel turns gray in plan view. It
will not be visible in the plan views when loaded into the
project.
29. Annotate tab -> Detail panel -> Symbolic line -> Choose the
subcategory as ‘ Plan Swing [cut]’
30. Draw a rectangle to represent the door panel when opened
(Fig 2). The dimensions do not need to be accurate.
31. Align and lock the bottom horizontal line of the door panel
symbol with the center reference plane.
2
32. Align and lock the vertical right edge to the door frame.
SYMBOLIC LINES- EXERCISE 1
33. Dimension the thickness of the door panel and set it of the
same thickness as the door frame (20mm) .
34. Family types -> Create a new parameter named ‘Door Panel
Width’
35. Add a formula to the parameter as “Width-40” (40mm being
the thickness of the door frames on both sides).
36. Dimension the width of the door swing and label the dimension
as the Door Panel Width.
37. Try to change the value of the width parameter to see if all
the geometries reflect the change correctly.

2
SYMBOLIC LINES- EXERCISE 1
38. Draw a symbolic line using center-ends arc as shown in Fig 1.
39. Select the arc -> properties palette -> Center Mark Visible
parameter -> turn it on.
40. Align and lock the center mark with the horizontal reference
plane in the center of the wall.
41. Similarly, align and lock the center mark with the door frame
edge.
42. Select the arc -> make the radius dimension permanent ->
label the radius dimension as Door Panel Width parameter.
43. Now, try to change the value of width parameter and see if
the geometry reflects the change correctly.
2
44. Save this family as “Tutorial_Door.rfa” and load into project.
45. Create a few walls and then add a few instances of the door
in the project.
