I. The Goals of My Off-Campus Practice

 Personal Skills

Juggling the responsibilities of a third-year accountancy intern at OAI General

Merchandise Corp. alongside my three years as a university scholar instilled in me

the importance of personal and professional growth. This off-campus experience

provided a valuable opportunity to hone those skills. Balancing my responsibilities as

an intern, scholar, and anything else on my plate has definitely emphasized the

importance of strong time management skills. This internship became a chance for

me to develop strategies to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and stay organized in a

demanding environment. Additionally, clear communication is crucial in any

professional setting. Throughout my internship, I actively worked on improving my

communication by listening attentively, asking clarifying questions, and effectively

conveying information to colleagues, superiors, and potentially even clients. Finally,

the internship presented challenges that I viewed as opportunities to strengthen my

problem-solving abilities. I focused on independently analyzing situations, identifying

solutions, and taking initiative to address them effectively.

 Business Skills

My internship at OAI General Merchandise Corp. was remarkable. Instead of just

cramming for exams, I got to put my accounting knowledge to the test on real world

setting. Working with actual receipts, invoices, and reports at Ocampo’s was not just

about getting the numbers right, it showed me how accounting works in the real

world. Plus, my excel knowledge got even more improved, I sorted bundle of

invoices, made the organization’s chart and presentations, and even encoded daily

sales report. I also learned how to update every month’s inventory, validation of data,

receipts, and invoices, and also filing of files making sure that everything is accurate

and in their right places. Overall, the internship was a total game-changer. It gave

me the practical skills I need to crush it in the accounting world.

II. Company’s Background / Profile

Ocampo’s Angeles was founded on October 10, 1948, amidst the vibrant

celebrations of the La Naval Fiesta. This auspicious beginning marked the start of a

long and successful journey in the retail industry. The business began with modest

resources, employing two dedicated salesgirls and one utility boy, operating out of a

small space on Luna Street, adjacent to the bustling public market.

In 1955, Ocampo’s Angeles took a significant step forward by relocating to its

permanent home on Plaridel Street. This move not only provided a more strategic

location but also allowed the business to expand its operations and better serve its

growing customer base.

Over the past seven decades, Ocampo’s Angeles has built a strong reputation

in the retail sector. The company’s mission, founded on the principle that a satisfied

customer is the best advertisement, has been the cornerstone of its success. This

customer-centric approach has fostered a loyal clientele and established Ocampo’s

Angeles as a trusted name in the community.

Today, Ocampo’s Angeles stands as a proud symbol of commitment to quality

and customer satisfaction. With a rich history and a steadfast dedication to its

mission, the company looks forward to continuing its legacy of excellence in the retail

industry for many more years to come.

III. The Nature of My Work

The lifeblood of Ocampos, a merchandising store, is its accounting

department. They ensure smooth operations and financial health by handling

everything from daily transactions (sales, purchases, collection, and expenses) to

managing accounts payable and receivable. This department also plays a crucial

role in inventory control and generating key financial statements – cash flow, balance

sheet, and income statement – that guide management decisions.

Going beyond record-keeping, the accounting team prepares budgets,

forecasts revenue for future planning, and ensures tax compliance by filing returns.

They implement internal controls to safeguard resources and streamline audits. They

continuously improve processes, maintain relationships with vendors and customers,

and manage accounting software. In short, this department acts as Ocampos's

financial backbone, guaranteeing its stability and success.

V. Getting Along on the Job

Observation on the Rules and Regulations of the Office

Ocampo’s is all about getting things right, but with a surprising twist – it's

actually a fun place to work. Meeting deadlines for reports is important, but they do it

with a smile. Everyone works together to make sure the numbers are accurate, but

there is a real sense of teamwork and friendship. Even when they double-check

things, which they do a lot, it is done in a helpful way.

Being professional is important, but they are also all about being nice, talking

clearly, and maybe even having a little laugh together. Dressing appropriately is a

must, but it is still a friendly and supportive environment where everyone feels

comfortable talking. They have clear rules to follow to avoid mistakes and keep

things on track. This means checking things carefully, approving payments, and

keeping good records. This way of working keeps things accurate and efficient, but it

also makes it a fun place to be for the whole accounting team – everyone feels like

they are on the same page and having a good time.

V. An Evaluation of my Training

A. Functional Areas of the Company

 Official Procedures

My internship at OAI General Merchandise Corp. gave me a solid understanding

of their official ways of doing things. These procedures were carefully written down

and followed by everyone, which ensured consistency across the company. I

learned how important it is to stick to these set guidelines, especially for things like

financial reports, everyday transactions, and audits. This helps keep all the financial

information accurate and reliable.

 Administrative
The administrative team at OAI General Merchandise Corp. truly impressed

me. Their well-organized structure and open communication channels ensured

everything ran smoothly. They expertly handled communication, scheduling, and

record-keeping, freeing up others to focus on their core tasks. Witnessing their

efficiency firsthand made me realize the critical role administrative support plays in

the smooth operation of both the accounting department and the entire company.

 Accounting

The accounting department operated with clear structure and well-defined

roles for everyone. This allowed me to learn a wide range of accounting tasks,

including budgeting, inventory management, financial reporting, and handling

accounts payable and receivable. They ensured accurate financial management by

strictly following accounting rules and utilizing advanced accounting software. This

experience significantly enhanced my understanding of company financial

procedures and equipped me with practical accounting skills.

B. Office Equipment Used

During my internship, I got hands-on experience with a variety of essential

office equipment. Everyday tasks relied on desktop with accounting software,

printers, scanners, and photocopiers. For more in-depth analysis and reporting, I

even used specialized tools like financial spreadsheets (excel) and calculators.

Mastering these tools was crucial for completing my tasks efficiently and effectively.

This experience highlighted the importance of proficiency in using office equipment

to excel in accounting roles.

C. Duties and Responsibilities / Work Done in the Company

My internship exposed me to a wide range of tasks that provided a well-

rounded understanding of office operations. I maintained accurate inventory levels

by updating in and out stock cards, and assisted with creating the company's

organizational chart. I honed my data management skills by sorting receipts, filing

documents, and validating data for accuracy. Additionally, I contributed to daily

operations through printing, photocopying, and organizing documents. Furthermore,

I helped shred old receipts to ensure proper record management and even

participated in the creation and printing of company cheques. A particularly notable

project involved revamping the entire stock card system by transitioning to new

cards. These diverse responsibilities not only provided valuable experience but also

demonstrated my ability to contribute to various aspects of the company's smooth

functioning.

the workplace culture at Ocampo’s. Employees were expected to present the

company's image and ideals through appropriate work attire. Maintaining a neat and

professional appearance benefited the company's reputation both internally and

externally. This focus on professional presentation also contributed to a courteous

and professional work environment.

VII. Problems Encountered During My Training and How I Solved Them

My internship in Ocampo’s accounting department presented several

challenges, which ultimately proved to be valuable learning experiences. Initially, the

large number of daily transactions made it difficult to keep everything organized and

accurate. To address this, I prioritized tasks by placing the most important

transactions at the top of my workload and created a detailed checklist to ensure

completion of all tasks.

Another challenge comes during reconciliations, where discrepancies in

financial data required identification and correction to maintain data integrity. I

meticulously reviewed all relevant documents and transactions, cross-referencing

entries with actual invoices and receipts, to pinpoint discrepancies. By working

closely with my fellow interns and maintaining accurate records, I was able to rectify

these errors and update the data accordingly.

Page | 13

Adapting to the professional work environment also necessitated adjustments

in professionalism and workplace etiquette. I focused on maintaining punctuality,

adhering to the dress code, and communicating in a professional manner, taking

cues from the behavior of my more experienced colleagues. To ensure I was on the

right track, I actively sought feedback from my supervisor on my performance and

areas for improvement. This proactive approach helped me successfully adjust to the

professional environment.

Through perseverance and a commitment to learning, I overcame these

challenges and made meaningful contributions to the accounting department at OAI

General Merchandise Corporation.

VIII. Observation, Assessment and Recommendation of the Student Intern in

their Host Establishment

My internship at OAI General Merchandise Corp. was a great learning

experience. I got a good understanding of their work environment and accounting

practices by watching how things were done. I learned the accounting software and

procedures quickly, and that helped me handle daily financial tasks and contribute to

preparing financial statements.

I was always on time, dressed professionally, and communicated well with

everyone. I'm good at learning new things quickly, using technology, and paying

close attention to detail. However, I realized I could improve my analytical and

analyzing complex financial data, and solving tough problems. To get better in those

areas, I would like to take some extra training in financial analysis. I would also like

to take on harder tasks. Getting regular feedback on my work would be helpful too,

so I can see how I am doing and keep improving.

remarkable, unforgettable, and something I can value forever as they gave me the

skills, experiences, and lessons I need for a successful accounting career.
