FACING THE FOOD CRISIS

Food is something that is consumed consistently in a certain amount to be the main source of
energy and nutrition that the body needs. There are many prosperous countries with abundant availability
of food, but there are also many countries that are experiencing a food crisis which creates a global food
crisis problem. All of this cannot be separated from the underlying causes, such as the high rise in oil
prices which has had a major impact on the demand for food commodities, plus the global financial and
economic crisis has had an impact on domestic food markets and prices and global food demand has
increased, because the world's population continues to grow, especially from poor Asian and African
countries. Before the food crisis escalates, we must overcome it and here are ways to deal with a food
crisis.

Currently, the number of poor and hungry world population every day has exceeded 1 billion
people (more than 15% of the population). There is a paradox, where an increase in food production
continues to occur, while the number of people who are hungry continues to increase. One of the most
effective ways to reduce the impact of the food crisis is food self-sufficiency and food sovereignty which
can be realized through food diversification in terms of production, availability, and consumption.
Dependence on one type of food source makes it difficult to realize food independence and sovereignty
because increased production of one type of food is difficult to keep pace with population growth.
The next step to overcome the problem of food crisis is to form a strong and caring government
to encourage policy systems and food production related to the economy, agriculture, science and
technology. Therefore, the problem of food security cannot be solved only from a local and national
perspective, but must be done from a global perspective. The creation of strong governance of agricultural
and food systems at the global, state and local levels is a key strategy for achieving reduction of hunger
and malnutrition.

The food crisis is a serious problem that must be addressed as soon as possible because the
impact is very worrying on a global scale where every country certainly has an important role to play in
helping to deal with the problem of the global food crisis, both developed and developing countries.
