Introduction

Background of the study

Many of us have stayed up more than once playing online games specifically

mobile legends, mobile legends can have a negative impact on us depending on how you use

it and It can lead to a decrease in academic performance, because mobile legends can

negatively influence the academic performance displacing the time that would have been

spent on other activities that educational such as reading and homework and because (mobile

legends consume at least 9 hours of time for teenagers playing online games it has negative

effects to do with conflicting views and in rather it will be damaged just like the studies and

loss of focus in the academy of the selected grade 11 students of Taguig Natinal High

School).

The mobile legends is one of the most trending online games to teenagers

nowadays. This game serve as their past time forenjoyment and it is the reason why they like

to play that game. We can observe that there are lot of people who play mobilelegends

because of the influence of other players. This dynamic makes students late in completing

assignments and overnight students immediately work on several assignments that are

deliberately piled up.

Playing too much is bad, just take few minutes to play either online games or offline

games. The researcher choose to study the negative impact of Mobile Legends to Academic

Performance of selected grade 11 Students of moreh academy because there are many

students in this modern society who are addicted in playing mobile legends. Even adults they

play mobile legends that can influence teenagers that result in negative effects. The main

focus of this study is to avoid game addiction and prevent the natural hobby of a student.

Mobile legend bang bang is a game designed which only for phone, this game has two

opposing teams to defend the fort so as not taken over by the opponent. Besides, mobile

legend is very popular and in demand from various circles from teenagers to adults. This

game is very popular in Asian as many as ten million accounts are known to have

downloaded this game on the Google Play Store. The role is there are two group fights to

reach and destroy the enemy's castle while defending their own castle to defend the castle

they have to control the path they pass through. There are three lines the first is “Upper”,

“Middle”, “Lower”. Those lines connect the road to the castle.

The first negative effect of Mobile Legends gaming is the potential for distraction when

another more important activity may loss of productivity distractions, etc. Mobile legend is

created by China developer is Moonton Technology Co. Ltd and shanghai mulong network

and technology Co.,ltd. July 11, 2016.

emerging special languages that are used in mobile legend game, called as register.Register

can be considered a different way language user in different circumstances.

According to(Wardaugh, 2006), register means set of language items which are

associated with social groups. Through register, a community can be differentiated with

another community simply register is one of part of their identity. If it is so, register is a

common term inside some specific community, for example in a group of indie fans, football

club, airlines, banks, and so on.

There have been some studies related to register such as (Syahrir, 2017). (Rahmawati,

2014), and (Sari, 2005). The first was conducted by (Syahrir, 2017). He investigated registers

used by gamers’ community in Point Blank Game. From this study, he found 31 registers

consisting of 20 formal registers and 11 informal registers.

The second was conducted by (Rahmawati, 2014)with the tittle Analysis of Register

Used in Soccer Page of Social Media Facebook she found 74 register which divided by its

part of speech.Third was conducted by (Sari, 2005)She studied about the register used by the

employees of shoe company Artisan Jaya Makmur Malang. She found 146 registers

consisting of 142 formal registers and 4 informal.

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored of Distraction-Conflict Theory Robert Baron (1986). A

distraction is something that makes it hard for one to think or pay attention (Leung, 2015). it

is process by which an individual or group is distracted from the desired focus area, blocking,

reducing, the desired information. Similarly, Robert Baron’s theory of distraction-conflict is

based on the task at that beaing aware of another object create a conflict between attending to

that object and attending to the task at hand (Baron, 1986). The distraction-conflict model

calls this attentional conflict.

Attention conflict refers to the situation in which the person feels a strong urge,

desire, or obligation to pay attention to the distractor (i.e., mobile games) when performing

their tasks, especially if the distractor is attention-grabbing and difficult to ignore (Baron,

1986). An attentional conflict occurs between multiple stimuli when the subject is interested

in paying attention to each stimulus. The task that is unrelated to the subject's primary goal is

referred to as the distraction. This conflict only occurs when the pressure to attend to each

input is equal and the individual's cognitive capacity to do so is inadequate.

Distraction-Conflict Theory provides insight into the evaluation of mobile games as

"other" object that distracts people from their primary goal (i.e., attending online classes).

Negative consequences of distraction includes attentional conflict and impaired task

performance. Concerning mobile games, its ubiquity and easy access makes it a potentially

strong mechanism for distraction. Therefore, mobile games has made distraction easier, due

to its portability and the diversity of entertainment feuture.

Chapter 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES AND STUDIES

Review of related literature is one of the significant aspect of the research process. It

helps the researchers gain more insight in carrying out the research process. This chapter

contains the literature review of the study gathered from journals, researches, and online

resources.

Related Literature

Focus

Focus has a significant impact on students’ academic performance.

According to a study by Hafiz et. al. published in the Journal of Education and Practice,

‘students with higher levels of focus perform better academically compared to those who

lack academically’. The authors founds who had difficulty maintining their focus during the

class had lower grade point average and were more likely to drop out of school compared to

their more focus and attention skills in academic success.

According to a study conducted by H. S. L. Liu et al. (2018), addiction to mobile

games, including Mobile Legends, can lead to decreased academic achievement and

increased absenteeism in secondary school students. Another study by F. Hwang (2019)

NATIONAL CAPITAL REGION
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
DIVISION OF TAGUIG CITY AND PATEROS
TAGUIG NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT

found that excessive mobile game use, such as playing Mobile Legends, can lead to a

decline in cognitive function and academic performance in college students.

Moreover, a study by D. Diels et al. (2019) highlighted the negative impact of mobile

gaming on participants’ motivation to study and engage in academic activities, as well as

their ability to concentrate on tasks. Research by M. Lozano et al. (2018) also found that

excessive use of mobile phones, including playing mobile games, can lead to poor academic

performance and lower grades, as students who spend more time playing games have less

time to study. The negative impact of Mobile Legends on the academic performance of

students is evident from the various studies and research conducted on this topic. It is

therefore important for parents and educators to monitor and limit the use of such games to

prevent it from adversely affecting students’ academic performance.

Addiction

Based on the study of Shinta Kristany et al. (2019) Mobile Legends is an online game

favored by adolescents, they like this game to relieve stress. If it is overplayed the players

will be addicted like they don’t care about the people around them. This was experienced by

Faculty of Communication Sciences students. Parents’ role is needed through the

interpersonal communication to overcome these addictive behaviors. Objective study is 1).

To find out about interpersonal communication appliated between parents with students at

FIKOM-UBL to overcome Mobile Legend addiction; 2). To find out the interpersonal

communication of parents with students of the in overcome Mobile Legends addiction and to

find out the barriers to interpersonal communication; 3). To find out the solution to overcome

the obstacles of interpersonal communication between parents and students overcome

Mobile Legends addiction.

Students are addicted to mobile legends, indicated by playing game from night to

morning, lazy to go to college,do not like to face to face interactions, decreased social skills;

Parents try to hear the reason and explanation of thr informant, also give advice; Parents

sometimes use their perspective and way of thinking; Communication barriers are overcome

by a sense if empathy from parents to infomants.

Motivation

According to Rochmayanti et. al. (2017) according to their study, the time intensity

category sometimes has a total playing time of less than one hour, with the impact having a

decrease in learning motivation. The time intensity category always has a very significant

decrease in motivation in the form of not wanting to learn, being indifferent to lessons, and

decreasing the value of subjects at school. The implications of this research including being

a discourse for students and teachers to start limting their students from playing online

games.Online games have a negative impact on students’ learning motivation. A child who is

addicted to online games will affect his motivation for learning, and if his learning motivation

is disturbed, it will also affect his learning achievements. Someone who is addicted to online

games requires special handling there is an influence to the intensity of playing.

A study by Li et. al.(2019) found that students who played mobile games frequently

had significantly lower academic performance and motivation levels compared to those who

did not play mobile games. This may be attributed to the time and attention spent on gaming,

resulting in students neglecting their academic responsibilities.

DIVISION OF TAGUIG CITY AND PATEROS
TAGUIG NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Similarly, a study by Chal et. al. (2018) found that excessive mobile gaming led to a

decline in motivation, academic achievement, and overall well-being among Korean

adolescents. The study concluded that mobile gaming was negatively associated with

academic success and that students should monitor and adjust their gaming habits to avoid

negative impacts.

Another relevant study by Ismail (2018) found that excessive mobile gaming

significantly reduced students’ motivation to engage in academic activities and

responsibilities. The research noted that students who played mobile games frequently were

more likely to have lower levels of motivation and engage in procrastination.

Cooperation

According to Tuomela (2013) In cooperation, a philosophical study, Tuomela offers

the first comprehensive philosophical theory of coopreration. He buildson such notions a

collective and joint goal, mutual beliefs, collective commitments, acting together and acting

collectivety. The book analyzes the varieties of cooperation, making use of the crucial

distinction between group-mode and individual-mode cooperation. The former is based on

collective goals and collective commitments, tha latter on private goals and commitments.

The book discusses the attitudes and the kind of practical reasoning that cooperation

requires and investigate some of the conditions under which cooperation is likely, rationally,to

occurs. It also shows some of the drawbacks of the standard game theorical treatments of

cooperation and present a survey of cooperation research in neighbouring fields. Students

who are addicted to online games or mobile legends do not have this attitudes and they do

not have cooperation with their fellow classmates because they are shy and don’t know how

to talk properly with their classmates.

The Negative factors that affects on students Academic Performance

According to Audi et. al. A growing number of language teaching studies have started

to consider the role of technology in teaching writing. Moreover, recent work in English as a

Foreig Laguage(EFL) class has highlighted the importace of introducing visual media in an

effort to help students improve their writing skills. To this end, forty-four Indonesian EFL

students were selected and assigned randomly to two writing classes, namely control and

experimental groups. Before the treatment, both groups had a pre-test.During the sessions

of instruction, both classes were taught by adopting Communicative Language(CTL). Online

Games or Mobile Legends come’s into play because of their addiction to online games and

cannot cooperat with his/classmates ‘Online Games’ or to be specific Mobile Legends Bang-

Bang.

Based on the study of Sandya et. al. they say that mobile legend, like any other

mobile game, has the potential to affect academic performance negatively if not managed

properly. Some ways which Mobile Legends can affect academic performance Time

Management, Distraction, Sleep Deprivation, Poor Social Life, Addiction. Therefore,

individuals should maintain a balance between Mobile Legends and academics to ensure

that the game does not negatively affect academic performance.

According to Olipas et. al. (2020) this study aimed at evaluating the extent of the

engagement to social networking sites, the impact of playing mobile games. The positive

and negative impacts of playing mobile legends were identified and evaluates, and the

degree off learning experience shoe that students frequently and actively engaged,

participated, attended, and involving in different activities essential for their holistic

development. The result of this study contributes to the body of knowledge focusing on

evaluating the extent of engagement to social networking sites, mobile games, and learning

experiences and may provide new opportunities and insights for future researches.
