PART B (13 MARKS)

1. A motor vehicle weighs 7975.5 N and its engine develops 14.7 kW at 2500 rpm. At this
engine speed the road speed of the car on the top gear is 64.37 km/h. Bottom gear reduction
is 3.5 : 1 and the efficiency of transmission is 88% on top and 80% on bottom gear. The
diameter of the tyres is 0.762 m and the projected frontal area of the vehicle is 1.116 m 2. The
coefficient of air resistance is 0.0314 N-h 2/km2-m2. R = KAV2, where R is resistance in N, K
is coefficient of resistance. A is the front area in m 2. V is the speed in km/h. Road resistance
is 0.023 W, N. Calculate:
(a) Speed of car on bottom gear:
(b) Tractive effort available at the wheels on top and bottom gear;
(c) Gradient which car can climb on bottom gear:
(d) The tractive force at the wheels required to start up the car on the level and attain a speed
of 48.28 km/h in 10 s. (Average resistance may be taken as half the maximum and
accelerating force to vanish at 48.28 km/h speed). (M/J 2016)
2. Determine the gear ratios of a four speed gear box for a vehicle of weight 13341.6 N
powered by an engine giving 20.6 kW at 1800 rpm. The vehicle has a frontal area of 2.23 m 2
and has a wheel dia. 0.71 m. The maximum gradient that the car has to negotiate is 1 in 4.
The tractive resistance may be taken as 50 N per 2240 N of the car. The wind resistance is
given by 0.03679 AV2, where A is the frontal area in m 2 and V is the vehicle speed in km/h.
Assume that the transmission efficiency is 0.75 and that at top gear, the car is expected to go
over a grade of 1 in 40. State any other assumptions you make.
(N/D 2018)

3. An eight cylinder automobile engine of 85.7 mm bore and 82.5 mm stroke with compression
ratio of 7 is tested at 4000 rpm on a dynamometer, which has a 0.5335 m arm. During a 10
minutes test at a dynamometer scale beam reading of 400 N, 4.55 kg of gasoline for which
the heating value is 46000 kJ/kg are burnt, and air at 294 K and 10×104 N/m2, is supplied to
the carburetor at the rate of 5.44 kg per min. Fine (a) the BP delivered, (b) the BMEP, (c)
