● RBI Monetary Policy Highlights: September 2022
○ The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) hiked the repo rate by 50 basis
points (bps) to 5.90 per cent

○ MPC decided by a majority of 5 out of 6 members to remain focused on the withdrawal of
accommodation to ensure that inflation remains within target going forward.
○ RBI has maintained consumer price index (CPI) inflation forecast for FY23 at 6.7%
○ The RBI governor announced that the standing deposit facility (SDF) rate is adjusted to 5.65 per cent
and the marginal standing facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate to 6.15 per cent
○ The central bank has cut the 2022-23 growth projection to 7 per cent from its previous estimate of 7.2
per cent.
○ The real GDP growth for 2022-23 is projected at 7.0 per cent with Q2 at 6.3 per cent, Q3 at 4.6 per
cent and Q4 at 4.6 per cent.
○ While the growth for Q1 of 2023-24 is projected at 7.2 per cent.
● Interest Rates on Small Savings Schemes (third quarter - October-December 2022)

○ The interest rate for senior citizens savings scheme has been hiked to 7.6% from 7.4% and Kisan
Vikas Patra to 7% from 6.9%.
○ The government has also increased interest rate for two, three-year time deposits.
○ As per the revised rate, a three-year time deposit with post offices will earn 5.8% (from 5.5%), but for
a two-year time deposit the rate increase is only 20 basis points (from 5.5% to 5.7%).
○ There is no change in the rates of one-year and five-year time deposits. They will continue to fetch
interest rates of 5.5% and 6.7%, respectively.

○ The interest rate for monthly income account scheme has also been hiked to 6.7% from current 6.6%.
○ This is the first time small savings rates have been hiked since the January to March quarter of
2019
■ The rates had been kept unchanged since the April to June quarter of 2020
○ Interest rates have not been changed for other popular schemes such as Public Provident Fund
(7.1%), Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme (7.6%), savings deposits (4%) and National Savings
Certificates (6.8%)

○ The Union Cabinet increased the dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief (DR) by 4% beginning
July 1, 2022, benefiting 6.97 million pensioners and 4.18 million central government employees
○ The 4% increase in DA and DR is over the existing rate of 34% of basic pay/pension.
