y ~~yl~nder Relief Valve
The steam supplied' from a boiler unless superheated will be a wet steam. When the .
is working, the '!Vate_r particles suspended in the w_et steam and the water formed by conde~ng~ne
will be driven by the piston to the cylinder ends. This at the · sat,on
end of the stroke develops excessive pressure on the cylin-
der cover which may blow off. To tlrevent this, the cylinder
relief valves are often fitted to the ends of the engine ·
cylinders. The cylinder relief valve is a spring loaded valve
which blows off the water accumulated at the end of the
cylinder and also the steam when the excess pressure is
developed at the end of the stroke.
Fig. 22.11 shows a cylinder relief valve. It is as-
sembled from the parts shown in fig.22. 72.-The body of the
valve-Part No. 1 is a right angle elbow. A wing type of valve
-Part No.2 is held down by the spring -Part No.3. The
spring pressure can be adjusted bf,., a screw-Part No.6
screwed at the top of the cover-Part No.5 which i_tself is
screwed over.th-e body. The lock nut-Part No.7 enables to
lock the screw in any desired position. When the pressure in
the engirie cylinder increases, the valve will be lifted by the
excess pressure and the water and the steam wi 11 escape
through the opening in the cover. Cylinder Relief Valve
Fig.22.11
Exercise
Details of a CYLINDER RELIEF VALVE are shown in Fig. 22.12. Draw the following views of
the assembled valve to 1: 1 scale.

22.8 Safety Valves
.
Boilers
·
are designed and tested
· b · the interest
to withstand a ce.rtain amount of pressure, ut m To
of the safety_ ~f the boiler, the actual·wa'rking pressure w~II always be-less than t~is pressu:iler,
prevent the nsmg of the boiler pressure to unsafe Ii m its which wou Id lead to the bursting of th e ss
a safe~ d~vice ~nown as 'safety valve' is mounted on the boiler. A safety valve releases th e e:~ve
steam which would cause the raise of the pressure above the working pressure. A safety arn
st
essentially consists of a lift type of valve always held closing an aperture which is expo~ed to e~re
pressure of the boiler by a mechanical force which exerts a pre-set pres.sure. When the boiler pre:ani
;f
exceeds the pre-set pressure, the valve will be Iifted by the steam pressure to release the ex~ess the
!
to the atmosphere so as 0 reduc~ the pressure in the boiler to safe limits. The common types valve,
safety valyes employed m the boiler practice are dealt here. They are: 1. Ramsbottom Safety
2. Lever Safety Valve and 3. Dead-weight Safety Valve.
