METHODOLOGY FOR INITIAL HORIZONTAL LOAD TEST ON TEST PILE

Client : Rail Vikas Nigam Limited.

Project : Construction of viaduct including related works for 4.748 km length excluding station areas
from CH.(-)1250 to CH.4128.00 between Joka to Behala Chowrasta including depot approach
at Joka, in Joka-BBD Bag corridor of Kolkata Metro Railway Line.

Construction of viaduct including related works for 4.762 km length excluding station areas
from CH.4128.00 to CH.9700.00 between Behala Chowrasta to Mominpur in Joka-BBD Bag
corridor of Kolkata Metro Railway Line.

A. Test Procedure:
Preparation of Pile surface at test location:-

The outer side of the pile shaft at Cut-Off level will be cleaned and chipped off the undulation
at Jacking location/ COL. Smooth finishing will be done by 1:3 cement sand mortar for fixing
MS base plate.

Reaction Arrangement:-

Reaction will be taken from reaction pile/ suitable reaction point as per the drawing
attached (Annexure -I). MS plate of 16 mm to 40 mm thick will be placed at the cleaned
and finished surface of test pile and reaction point. Subsequently the Hydraulic Jack will be
placed horizontally in between reaction point and the test pile. The test load will be applied
by means of one no. hydraulic Jack of 400MT capacity.
One no datum bars will be fixed on immovable supports on opposite side of Jacking point of
test pile. The both ends of datum bar will be fixed at a distance of 3d (subject to minimum
of 1.5m.) from the edge of pile where d is the dia of test pile and the level of datum bar will
be 50mm to 100 mm above the COL level. One no. calibrated dial gauges of 0.01mm
sensitivity; will be positioned at COL level of test pile. The tips of the dial gauge shall touch
on the central portion of the square or rectangular glass plate fixed over the finished vertical
surface of the test pile.

B. Physical Data:
1. Test Pile No - “03”
2. Test Pile Size - 1200mm Dia.
3. Location of Pile - Near Joka Tram Depot
[N-2483262.4467, E-633778.3247]
4. Date of Concreting - 11th June, 2011

D. Test Load Details:

1. Design Load (as per Drawing) = 20.00 MT
2. Test Load (as per RVNL- drawing 2011016/BS/STR/FDN-01) = (20.00 x 2.00) MT
= 40.00 MT
3. Increment of Load (20% of D.L. as per IS 2911 part IV) = 20% x 20.00 MT
= 4 MT
4. Capacity of Jack = 400 MT
5. Number of Jack = 1 Nos.
6. Ram Dia. = 14.50 cm
7. C/s area of Ram = 165.20 Sq. cm.
8. Applied Pressure per MT = 6.053 Kg/Sq.cm.
9. Each Division of Pressure Gauge = 20.00 Kg/Sq.cm.
= 1 no x (20/1000) x 165.20 MT
= 3.304 MT
10. No. of Deflectometer = 1 No.

F. Application of Load :-
Load will be applied through hydraulic Pump arrangement and the load can be
calculated by a pressure gauge. Application and increment of load will be
done as per the load chart shown above,

i) Loading Procedure: - Application of increment of test load and taking of

measurement or displacement in each stage of loading will be maintained till rate
of displacement of the pile top is either 0.1mm in first 30 min. or 0.2mm in first 1
hr. or maximum upto 2hrs. if previous two criteria is not fulfilled. After achieving
the final test load, this final test load will be maintained for 24hrs.

ii) Unloading Procedure: - Unloading will be started after maintaining 24hrs.

measurement of test load. Load decrement on pile can be 20% of design load and
rebound taking is same as settlement measurement.

G.Recording data & Presentation:-

The horizontal pile load test data essentially accounts for three variables and these
are Load, Horizontal/Lateral Deflection and Time. All these will be recorded
sequentially for the tests under consideration and recorded in a Data Sheet, shown
below,
