Learning Objectives

 The students should learn to develop an understanding about


Anne Frank—a Jewish girl who witnessed horrors of Nazi rules as a
holocaust victim.
 The students should learn to analyse her relationship that she
shared with her family, teachers, friends and her most beloved
diary.

• Anne started writing a diary because she did not have a real friend
to share her thoughts with.

• She had a loving family and a close group of friends with whom she
liked to have fun and talk about ordinary things.
• But she could not open up to them about anything except the
most ordinary things.
• Hence, she decided to pen her thoughts into a diary and named it
‘Kitty’.

A Brief Sketch of Her Family


• Anne’s father married her mother Edith Hollander Frank when he
was thirty-six and she was twenty-five.
• She had an elder sister, Margot who was three years older than
her.
• When her parents emigrated to Holland in 1933, she and Margot
were sent to live with their grandmother in Aachen.
• Anne and Margot moved to Holland a few months later, and she
started schooling there.
• Anne’s grandmother fell ill in 1941 and died the next year. Anne
still missed her and thought about her often.

Anne at School
• She did her nursery at a Montessori school, and started with first
form when she was six.
• The headmistress Mrs. Kuperus was her class teacher in the sixth
form.
• Both she and Anne were in tears as they bid farewell to each other
at the end of the year.
• She and her classmates awaited results on who would be promoted
to the next class, and this had got the class ‘quaking in its boots’.
• Half the students, including the two boys who sat behind her, had
made bets on who would or would not pass.
• Their endless bickering used to make Anne and her friend laugh,
and also be a cause of annoyance.

Anne and Mr. Keesing


• Anne was caught talking in class by Mr. Keesing, her maths teacher.
• He assigned her to write an essay titled ‘A Chatterbox’ as
punishment.
• Anne wrote a humorous essay arguing that she inherited her
talkativeness from her mother, and hence it is out of her control.
• She was caught talking again in the next lesson and this time she
had to write on ‘An Incorrigible Chatterbox’.
• The third time, Mr. Keesing asked her to write him another essay
titled, ‘Quack, quack, quack, said Mistress Chatterbox.
• Anne used her friend Sanne’s help to write the essay completely in
verse form (poetry).
• The poem was about a father swan who killed his three baby
ducklings because they quacked too much, and hinted at Mr.
Keesing as the villain.
• Mr. Keesing burst out laughing on reading the poem, and read it out
to her class and a few other classes as well.
• Anne says that Mr. Keesing did not bother her anymore, but on the
other hand he was always cracking jokes in the class.

Margot want to live with their grandmother. Later, in December
that year, Margot joined their parents but Anne joined them on
Margot’s birthday as a surprise. She was the birthday present for
Margot that year.

4. Anne was different from other girls of her age. Substantiate
the statement with reference to the lesson, “From the Diary of

Ans. She was very intelligent and had a sharp brain. She could think
clearly and insightfully and had deep thoughts and ideas which
she wanted to share with someone. She found that her friends
were unable to understand her completely. Their mental wave
length did not match with that of Anne’s. They could only talk
to Anne about the ordinary everyday matters. She had a loving
family and friends but could not share her deep thoughts with
anyone thus, she got her diary 'kitty'.
