High Altitude Guidelines
ALTITUDE DO’S
1. Allow time for gradual acclimatisation to high altitudes. Ascend slowly to higher elevations, giving
your body time to adjust.
2. Drink plenty of water to combat dehydration caused by increased respiratory and urine output at
high altitudes.
3. Maintain a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates and avoid heavy or greasy foods.
4. Ensure adequate rest and sleep to assist with the acclimatisation process.
5. Pay attention to symptoms of altitude sickness and report any discomfort or changes in health to
trip leaders or medical professionals.
ALTITUDE DONT’S
1. Ascend gradually, and avoid sudden increases in altitude.
2. Minimise physical exertion, especially during the initial days at high altitudes.
3. Limit alcohol intake and avoid smoking, as these can contribute to dehydration and exacerbate
altitude-related symptoms.
4. Avoid the use of sleeping pills, as they can interfere with the body's ability to acclimatise.
5. Do not ignore symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headache, nausea, or dizziness. Report any
discomfort promptly.
Health Advisory
1. Be aware of symptoms of altitude sickness, including headache, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of
breath. If symptoms persist, descend to lower altitudes.
2. Drink plenty of fluids, as high altitudes can lead to increased fluid loss through respiration and
urination.
3. Use sunscreen, sunglasses, and protective clothing to guard against increased sun exposure at
higher altitudes.
4. Be mindful of oxygen levels and carry portable oxygen if necessary, especially in areas with limited
oxygen availability.
5. Consult a healthcare professional before traveling to high altitudes, especially if you have
preexisting health conditions.
6. Familiarise yourself with emergency evacuation procedures and the location of medical facilities in
the area.
Remember that everyone reacts differently to high altitudes, and individual health conditions can
impact susceptibility to altitude-related issues. These guidelines are general recommendations, and
it's crucial to consult with healthcare professionals for personalised advice based on individual health
histories.
