Introduction Do you ignore and move on from unknown words

practice identifying terms you don't know by using
antonym or contrast clue. This resource walks high
school students through the reading process while
promoting critical thinking and careful reading.

Similar to synonyms, antonyms are words having

opposite meanings that might provide context.
Sentences contain an implied contradiction or
contrast, such as but, however, or other specific cue
words. Remember that the definition of the unknown
term can only be revealed by inverting the meaning of
the antonym.

both have five minutes to find another pair who
has the word that means the opposite of what
you have. For instance, if I have the word yes, I
now need to find the person who has the word
NO. Why? Because their meaning is opposite.
Once you've located your partner, you'll stay
seated and wait to share the two opposing words
you possess. There will be duo presentations.
There could be 2pts on each correct pair.
Your gained points on each activity will be
recorded on the scoresheet.
