Instructions for Sharpening a Klein UNIBIT Step–Drill Bit

Any cutting tool will dull with use, so for best results the tip and flute should be
sharpened periodically. Remember to wear approved eye protection.

Tips – Can be sharpened with an ordinary bench grinder.

1. Position yourself in front of grinding wheel. Grasp shank firmly in one
hand so you can rotate drill while supporting body with other hand.
2. Position drill tip at 45-degree angle to grinding wheel. Touch leading or
cutting edge to wheel. Maintain light contact while rotating drill clockwise,
finishing at trailing edge. Follow factory contour as closely as
possible. Trailing edge must be lower than leading edge by at least
1/32” to cut cleanly without rubbing.
3. If tip breaks, or if repeated sharpening grinds away first step, a new tip can
be created by following above instructions.

Flutes – Can be easily sharpened with proper sharpening stone.

Grind cutting edge side of flute to match factory contour in relation to centerline
of drill.
Lubricate drill to extend life of cutting edges. Store drill in a handy storage
package. Replace with a new bit when worn out.

Do’s and Don’ts

Do allow point to cut. Don’t force. Do keep sharp.
Don’t apply side pressure. Do apply pressure straight on.
Do watch out for a second layer of material.

RECOMMENDED DRILL SPEEDS

Hole Size RPM
Up to ¼”/6mm…………………………………1,500 – 1,750
¼”/6mm to ½”/13mm………………………….1,000 – 1,250
½”/13mm to ¾”/19mm………………………... 500 – 1,000
¾”/19mm to 1”/25mm……………………………...300 – 500
1”/25mm to 1-3/8”/34mm…………………………..250 – 300

Safety Tips and Warnings

When using the UNIBIT step drill, make sure the backside of the material being
drilled is clear of wires, cables, pipes and other objects that might cause hazards.
 Protect your eyes, ALWAYS WEAR APPROVED EYE PROTECTON.
 Never work on or drill near live circuits.

Tap and Drill Sizes with Decimal Equivalents

In general you can find the tap-drill for any size 60-degree thread by subtracting one
pitch length from the major diameter.

FORMULA: Major Diameter minus One Pitch Length equals Tap-drill size.

English Example for 3/8-16 thread: .375 - .0625 = .3125 tap-drill (5/16)
Metric Example for M6 X 1 thread: 6mm – 1mm = 5mm tap-drill
