AN tow-lane divided highway is to be constructed on a new
alignment. Traffic volume forecasts indicate that the Traffic
volume in both direction during the first year of operation will
be 950 with the following trucks vehicle mix and axle load.
1- Type 2 (20 ton) = 2%
2- Type 2-2(46 ton) =3%
3- Type 2-S1(33 ton) =1%
4- Type 3 (27 ton) =2%
5- Type 3-S1 (40 ton) =1%
6- Type 3-S2 (47 ton) =2%
7- Type 3-2 (53 ton) =2%
8- Type 2-S2 (40 ton) =1%
9- Type 3-S1-2 (66 ton) =1%
10- Type 3-S3(54 ton) =1%

The vehicle mix is expected to remain the same throughout

the design life of the pavement. If the expected annual traffic
growth rate is (2) for all vehicles determine the design esal
given a design period 20 years and the pavement has
aterminal serviceability index pt. of 2.5 and S=0.35. and
determine the thickness of the pavement courses layers of
intrestate highway in rural area the quality of drainage is
considered good because water can be removed from the
subbase within a one day however,there is an average
amount of precipitation ,equal to 25% of the time pavment
will be exposed to moisture levels approaching saturation.
The material properties are as follows: marshall stability
(8.4)kn for HMA(surface layer), CBR for base layer its (50)and
CBR for subbase layer its (30)( the roadbed of subgrade is
1500*cbr )

SOLUTION:

1-AADT= 1900/0.15= 12666.66

2-Calculate ESAL For All Trucks ESAL = AADT x 𝑇𝑓 x T x G x D x L x 365 x Y

From Table D.4, D.5 and D.6 When SN= 5 The Axel Load Factors

For single

16 kips (7 Ton) = 0.623

29 kips (13 Ton) = 6.195

For 2-Axel load

45 kips (20 Ton) = 3.275

For 3-Axel load

60 kips (27 Ton) = 2.51

Type 2

Load factor = 0.623 + 6.195 = 6.818

ESAL = 12666.66 x 0.7 x 22.15 x 365 x 6.818 x 0.02 = 16*106

Type2-2

Load factor = 0.623 + 3(6.195) = 19.208

ESAL = 12666.66 x 0.7 x 22.15 x 365 x 19.208 x 0.03 = 17*106

Type2-S1

Load factor = 0.623 + 2(6.195) = 13.013

ESAL = 12666.66 x 0.7 x 22.15 x 365 x 13.013 x 0.01 = 16*106

Type3

Load factor = 0.623 + 3.275 = 3.898

ESAL = 12666.66 x 0.7x 22.15 x 365 x 3.898 x 0.02 = 15 * 106

Type3-S1

Load factor = 0.623 + 3.275+ 6.195 = 10.093

ESAL = 12666.66 x 0.7 x 22.15 x 365 x 10.093 x 0.01 = 15* 106

Type3-S2

Load factor = 0.623 + 2(3.275) = 7.173

ESAL = 12666.66 x 0.7 x 22.15 x 365 x 7.173 x 0.02 = 16 ∗ 106

Type3-2

Load factor = 0.623 + 3.275+ 2(6.195) = 16.288

ESAL = 12666.66 x 0.7 x 22.15 x 365 x 16.288 x 0.02 = 16* 106

Type2-S2

Load factor = 0.623 + 3.275+ 6.195 = 10.093

ESAL = 12666.66 x 0.7 x 22.15 x 365 x 10.093 x 0.01 = 15 * 106

Type3-S1-2

Load factor = 0.623 + 3.275+ 3(6.195) = 22.483

ESAL = 18333.33 x 0.7 x 22.15 x 365 x 22.483 x 0.01 = 17 * 106

Type3-S3

Load factor = 0.623 + 3.275 + 2.51 = 6.408

ESAL = 12666.66 x 0.7 x 22.15 x 365 x 6.408 x 0.01 = 0

ESAL TOTAL = 16+17+16+15+15+16+16+15+17+=143*106

3- to find thickness of the pavement courses layers (d1,d2,d3)

From eqution

D1=sn1/a1

D2=SN2-a1D1/a2m2

D3=SN3-a1D1-a2D2m2/a3m3

We find (SN1, SN2, SN3) from figure 11.25

to Find Reliability from table 11.14 (95%) to Find (a1,a2,a3)and (E1,E2,E3) from figures by
following (7.13,7.15,7,16)

then a1=0.38, E1=3.1

a2=0.12, E2=76

a3=0.11, E3=69

TO find (m2, m3) from table 11.20

Then a1=0.38, E1=3.1

A2=0.12, e2 = 76

A3 = 0.11 e3 = 69
