sampling , Parameter , Statistics , Standard Error , Statistical Hypothesis, Null hypothesis,
Alternative hypothesis , Type I Error , Type II Error , Critical Region
2 Give an example of discrete random variable & continuous random variable
3 Give Probability density function of standard normal variate.
4 Write Properties of normal distribution.
5 Give the difference between sample survey and population survey
6 Explain Lottery Method.
7 Write Advantages and Limitations of Simple random sampling & Stratified random
sampling,
8 Find areas between the following standard normal values of z between (i) z = -1 & z = 2.4
(ii) z = 1.2 & z = 2.4 (iii) 𝑧 ≥ 1.5 (iv) 𝑧 ≥ −0.5 (v) 𝑧 ≤ 1.2
9 The costumer accounts at a certain departmental store have average balance of Rs. 20 and
the standard deviation of Rs. 40. Assuming that account balances are normally distributed
find (i) what percentage of accounts are over Rs. 150 (ii) What percentage of accounts are
between Rs. 100 & Rs. 150?
10 The mean and S.D. of a normal distribution are 20.5 and 5. Find median and Quartile
deviation and Standard deviation.
11 In an intelligence test administered to 1000 children the average score is 42 and its S.D. is
24. assuming that the scores are normally distributed then find (i) the number of children
exceeding score 50. (ii) the number of children getting score between 30 and 54. (ii) the
number of students less than score 45.

12 For studying some characteristics of a population observations are 5, 9, 11, 19. Taking all
possible samples of size 2 without replacement from this population verify the following
results.
𝑁−𝑛 𝑆 2
(i) 𝐸(𝑦̅) = 𝑌̅ (ii) V(𝑦̅) = (iii) 𝐸(𝑠 2 ) = 𝑆 2
𝑁 𝑛
13 The observations of a population are 12, 14, 15, 16, 18. Taking all possible samples of size
2 without replacement verify the following results.
𝑁−𝑛 𝑆 2
(i) 𝐸(𝑦̅) = 𝑌̅ (ii) V(𝑦̅) = (iii) 𝐸(𝑠 2 ) = 𝑆 2
𝑁 𝑛
14 The observation of the population are 10, 14, 20, 36. Take all possible samples of size 2
with replacement from the population and verify the following result.
𝜎2
(i) 𝐸(𝑦̅) = 𝑌̅ (ii) V(𝑦̅) = 𝑛
15 A population is divided in three strata. The information is regarding them is as follows:
Stratum Number of units in Stratum mean Stratum
the stratum variance
1 60 8 12
2 30 6 10
3 10 9 4.5
If 10, 6, 3 units are taken respectively from these strata. Find the variance of stratified
mean and also find the population mean.
16 10 observations of a population are divided into two strata as follows:
Stratum 1 - 1 3 5 8 10 15
Stratum 2 - 16 22 24 26
Sample of size 3 is taken from stratum 1 and of size 2 from stratum 2 find 𝑉(𝑦̅𝑠𝑡 )
17 1000 units of population are divided into 3 strata. The following information regarding
them is as follows:
Stratum Number of units in Stratum
the stratum Variance
1 200 96
2 500 120
3 300 72
If sample of 80 observations is drawn from population with proportional and optimum
allocation find 𝑉(𝑦̅𝑠𝑡 ) for both.
18 The mean life tine of 100 fluorescent light tubes produced by a company is computed to
be 1570 hours with a standard deviation of 120 hours. The company claims that the average
life of the tubes produced by the company is 1600 hours. Is the claim justified ? (Use 5%
level of significance)
19 A manufacturer of ballpens claims that a certain pen he manufactured has a mean writing
of 400 pages with a S.D. of 20 pages. A purchasing agent selects sample of 100 pens and
put them for test. The mean writing life of sample was 390 pages. Should the purchasing
agent reject the manufacturer’s claim at 1% level of significance?
20 The intelligence test on two groups of boys and girls gave the following results. Examine
if the difference is significant.
Girls : Mean = 84 S.D. = 10 Numbers = 121
Boys : Mean = 81 S.D. = 12 Numbers = 81
21 A sample of 500 villages of a district A gave average population of 480 people with S.D.
of 15 people. Another sample of 600 villages of another district B gave average population
of 475 people with S.D. of 18 people. Is the difference between the means significant?
(Use 1% level of significance)
22 Two independent samples are drawn from two different populations the information is
given below:
Sample S,D.
size
100 240
200 220
Test whether the variabilities of two populations are significantly differ.
23 If we toss a coin for 600 times and we get the heads for 280 times test whether the coin is
regarded biased or not at 1% significance level?
24 In a sample of 100 persons of locality 60n are found to be wheat eaters and 40 are rice
eaters. Can we assume that both the food articles are equal popular?
25 In a large city A, 20% of random sample of 900 school boys had defective eye sight. In
another city B 15.5% of a random sample of 1600 boys had the same defect. Is the
difference between two proportions significant?
26 In two colleges, Out of 800 students 250 students have good creativity in A and out of
1000 students 280 have good creativity in B. Test the hypothesis that both colleges have
same proportion at 10% significance level.
27 The mean weight of a random sample of size 100 from a students population is 65.8 kg
and the S.D. is 4. Set up 95% confidence interval for the mean weight of students’
