ASSESSMENTS AND EVALUATION IN COMPUTER STUDIES

Assessment – it is a process of determining student performance in classroom tests, school


projects, national or international examinations.
Purpose of Test and Examination
1. To reveal to the student their strength and weakness in various topic of the syllabus.
2. Inform teachers about the extent of achievement of lesson objectives
3. Inform parent/ guardian about their children progress in school
4. Judge the kind of remedial work that should be plan for specific student.
5. For placement purposes.

The kind of classroom Test / Examination


1. Essays
2. Structured
3. Objective
4. Practical
5. project
1. Essay.
These are analytic, interpretative or descriptive literally accounts based on given topics from
the school syllabus
Advantage
1. Quick to set
2. Encourages comprehensive study
3. Test creativity and logic in presentation
4. Provide for expression of thought in prose form.

Disadvantages
1. Low syllabus coverage
2. Subjective scoring
3. Carry over and halo effect may influence marking one question at a time

How to overcome subjective scoring

- Anonymity
- Strict use of marking scheme

N/B Essay question should construct using action verbs. e.g. describe, summarize, explain,
evaluate, compare, contrast, discuss, outline e.t.c.

i. Structured Questions
- Candidates are required provide a series of answer to sections of a given questions.
- The sections are usually based on a common topic

Objective Test
These are test where various markers using same marking scheme arrive at the same answer.
There are 4 types of objective test.
a. True or false e.g. computer of . true or false
b. Completion,
c. matching – columns
d. Multiple choice
- A multiple choice item consists of a stem and several options of which one is correct.
- the correct answer is called the key while the incorrect option are called distractors

Practical exams
- This is done to cover arrange of process skills by the students
- Practical exams are given to form 3 and 4

For a teacher to make good test he/she should test all areas of development of a child i.e
- Cognitive
- psychomotor
- And effective domain – this is achieved by using a table of specification
- Social domain

EVALUATION

Is a process of making judgment about values of effectiveness of an educational programme.

- Assessment is part of that process

TESTING IN COMPUTER STUDIES KCSE

The computer studies is tested as 451.

There are two papers 451/1 and 451/2

Computer studies paper 1 (451/1)

451/1 is a theory paper

Has 2 section A and B

Section A has 15 questions with 40 marks and student is supposed to answer all questions

Section B has question 16 with 4 parts and has a total of 40 marks.

Paper two 451/2, practical paper

The paper has 4 main areas;

1. Desk top publishing- MS publisher, Adobe page maker


2. Word processing- MS word
3. Database- MS access
4. Spreadsheet- MS Excel

Paper two tests 2 questions of 50 marks each.
