AMEDK3-022: Unit Introduction
01 AMEDK3-022: Unit Introduction
About this unit
This unit will give you the knowledge and skills needed to safely inspect, test and maintain pressurised
fluid systems that use electrical-pneumatic control devices to make them work.

This unit is graded: pass, merit, distinction or refer. Please refer to Section 6 for grading and marking
criteria.

The higher risk activities within this unit require safeguarding at all times.

Why am I doing this unit?

To determine your ability to achieve the following learning outcomes for AMEDK3-022:
1. Know about the legislation, regulations and safety precautions that apply when working with fluid
power systems.
2. Know the construction and operation of fluid power devices and how they are represented as
symbols in circuit diagrams.
3. Be able to apply fluid power principles in the design of circuits.
4. Be able to carry out maintenance, inspection, testing and fault-finding on fluid power systems.

How do I pass?

You have to demonstrate your achievement of all learning outcomes. Evidence of your achievement will
be placed in your portfolio of evidence. The main pieces of evidence for your portfolio will include:
• AMEDK3-022A: Knowledge Assessment
• AMEDK3-022B: Knowledge Assessment
• AMEDK3-022C: Practical Assessment
• AMEDK3-022D: Practical Assessment
• Task(s) set by Teacher/assessor (if appropriate).

Assessment of the unit

This unit is assessed by two Centre marked knowledge assessments that covers learning outcomes 1 - 2
and two Centre marked practical assessments that covers learning outcomes 3 - 4.

How do I make a start?

Your Tutor/Assessor will ask you to complete work in an appropriate learning environment. You will
gather together the work you produce in a file or folder, which then becomes your portfolio of evidence.
Both you and your Tutor/Assessor must sign and date the individual pieces of work in your portfolio.
Your Tutor/Assessor will assess your portfolio to make sure that you have covered all the learning
outcomes and assessment criteria for this unit.

You must follow health and safety procedures at all times.

Assessment Specification
You must be able to produce a report that demonstrates that you will:
• Know the construction and operation of fluid power devices and how they are represented as
symbols in circuit diagrams.

In order to successfully achieve this learning outcome, you will demonstrate that you can:
• Describe, with the aid of suitable diagrams, the construction and operation of a given electro-
pneumatic device and a given electro-hydraulic device.
• Use standards to identify electro, pneumatic and hydraulic components shown as symbols in
given circuit diagrams and reference materials.
• Compare the construction and operation of a pneumatic system with that of a hydraulic system.

Task 1 - Construction and operation of fluid power devices and how they are represented as symbols
in circuit diagrams
You must produce a report that describes, with the aid of suitable diagrams, the construction and
operation of a given electro-pneumatic device and a given electro-hydraulic device.

You are then given a suitable set of circuit diagrams and manufacturers’ reference material in order
to use standards to identify electro, pneumatic and hydraulic components shown as symbols. This
could be for the electro-pneumatic device and a given electro-hydraulic device described earlier.

Finally, you must make comparisons of the construction and operation of the two systems.

The report should be completed under controlled conditions set by the tutor.

Your report can be produced either by hand or by using a computer. If you use a computer, you must
ensure that it is all your own work.

Relevant British and International Standards, health and safety and other publications should be
available to you.

Assessment time: the knowledge assessment must be completed within the allocated guided
