New data about the boundary between the Polyanitsa and Gradeshnitsa cultures:
based on pottery
Petar Leshtakov
Abstract
The problems regarding the geographical spread of the Polyanitsa and Gradeshnitsa cul-
tures, the boundary and the possible contact zone between them are poorly discussed in the
Bulgarian archaeological literature. This is due to the uneven exploration of the area in question
and the lack of publications of pottery assemblages from the Early Chalcolithic in North-Cen-
tral Bulgaria.
The authors dealing with the Early Chalcolithic in Northern Bulgaria draw the bound-
ary between these two cultures in the area between the Osum and Vit Rivers, along the right
bank of the Osum River or along the valleys of the Yantra and Rositsa Rivers. Unfortunately,
these opinions are poorly supported by empirical material. The most secure data for clarifying
the discussed problem can be extracted from pottery with its variety in technology, shapes and
decorations that is different in each of the cultures in question.
Along the Osum River there are four sites that have been partially excavated – the De-
vetashka cave, a settlement in the “Barata” locality near the village of Umarevo, the fortress in
Lovech and the Tabashka cave near Lovech. Other nine sites from the period concerned have
been recorded during field surveys. They are located on both banks of the Osum River. The
analysis of the pottery with rich white incrustated decoration and geometric motifs organized
in metopes and its close parallels to the characteristics of the pottery assemblages from North-
western Bulgaria allow us to refer these sites to the area of the Gradeshnitsa culture.
Last year field surveys yelded information about three sites located on the left bank of the
Rositsa River. The sherds collected from the surface bear some features typical of the Gradesh-
nitsa culture. However, there are also ornamentation traits that are probably of eastern origin and
can be found in the Early Chalcolithic sites in the Yantra River valley. This fact suggests that the
three sites probably belonged to the contact zone between Gradeshnitsa and Polyanitsa cultures.
However, such an opinion is yet to be confirmed or rejected by archaeological excavations.
