— Kuulutko yhdistykseen?

Samassa puhalsi tehtaan pilli. Anni oli jo päässyt likelle ovea, kun
sai luovuttaa paikkansa toiselle ja kiiruhtaa työpaikalleen.
Mutta vauhti kiihtyy yhä hurjemmaksi. Juna kiitää kuin siivillä, ilma
korvissa surisee ja soittaa. Kohta loppuvat tasangot, jää taakse koko
kotiseutu. — — Tekisi taaskin mieli heittäytyä maahan ja tarrautua
kiinni piharuohoon. — Hän solmieli katkenneita langanpäitä,
pysäytteli käämiä, korjaili ja pani uudelleen pyörimään. — Kumma,
lohduton tunne sydänalassa nousi taas uhkaavana. Päätä huimasi,
hän koetti istualtaan ohjata konettaan.
Hän karkoitti kuvan, kun toinen heti sukelsi esiin. Hän oli
paistavinaan pihvejä Vuorelan keittiössä. Tuossa ne jo valmiina
kauniin ruskeina miellyttävästi tuoksuivat saaden veden suuhun
herahtamaan. Lapset ympärillä hääräilivät kysellen, oliko ruoka jo
pian valmista.
— Ei ole kukaan niin rakas, kuin sinä, en ole vielä nähnyt tyttöä
sinun veroistasi.
— Samppa!
— Elänhän minä.
— Mikä se on tuo?
— Näenhän minä.
