Question 1
Question 2
TOTAL

O – CH – 4 2017 Entebbe Joint Examination Bureau: Chemistry Turn Over

1. You are provided with the following;
BA I; a solution of 0.2M hydrochloric acid
BA2; a solution made by dissolving 2.65g of sodium salt, Na 2X in
250cm3 of distilled water.

You are required to determine the relative molecular mass of the radical
represented by X.

Procedure
Pipette 20cm3 or 25 cm3 of BA2 into a clean conical flask. Add 2 drops of methyl
orange indicator.

Titrate it with BA1 from burette until the end point is reached.

Record your results in the table below.

Repeat the titration until you obtain consistent results.

Volume of pipette used……………………………………………...........……….cm3

2. You are provided with a compound P which contains two cations and two
anions. Carry out the following tests to identify the cations and anions in P.
Identify any gases that may be evolved.

Record your observations and deductions in the table below.

TEST OBSERVATION DEDUCTIONS

a) Heat two spatula endfuls of P
in a test-tube until no further
change

b) Dissolve two spatula endfuls of

P in 5cm3 of distilled water
and filter. Keep both filtrate
and residue.

(i) To the first portion, add

dilute sodium hydroxide
solution drop wise until in
excess.

(ii)To the second portion, add

dilute ammonia solution
drop wise until in excess.

(iii) To the third portion,

add potassium iodide
solution.

4
TEST OBSERVATION DEDUCTIONS
(iv) To the fourth portion,
add Lead (II) nitrate.

(v) To the fifth portion,

carry out a test of your
own to confirm the
anion in the filtrate.

c) Wash the residue with distilled

water, transfer it to a boiling
tube and dissolve it in dilute
nitric acid. Divide the
resultant solution into two
portions.
(i) To the first portion, add
aqueous sodium hydroxide
drop wise until in excess.

(ii)To the second portion, add

aqueous ammonia drop
wise until in excess.

P contains:

(i) Cation ……………….....................................…………………………..

(ii) Anion …………..................……………………………………………..
