Question one

You are provided with the following

BA1 which is a solution containing 4.0gl-1 of sodium hydroxide, BA2 which is a solution of
sulphuric acid with unknown concentration. Use BA2 to standardize it and used it to determine
the percentage purity and impurity of BA3 which is a solution containing 9.8g per litre of sodium
carbonate. You are required to determine the concentration of the aid and the percentage purity
and impurity of sodium carbonate in BA3

Procedure;
Pipette 25 cm3 or 20cm3 of BA1 into a clean conical flask. Then add 2-3 drops of
phenolphthalein indicator and titrate with solution BA2 from the burette until the end point.
Repeat the titration 2-3 times until you obtain consistent results. Enter your results in the table
below.
Results:

Volume of pipette used: …………………………………………. cm3

1 2 3

Final burette reading (cm3)

Initial burette reading (cm3)

Volume of BA2 used (cm3)

Titre values used to calculate average volume of BA2.

Procedure;
Pipette 25 cm3 or 20cm3 of BA3 into a clean conical flask. Then add 2-3 drops of methyl orange
indicator and titrate with solution BA2 from the burette until the end point. Repeat the titration 2-
3 times until you obtain consistent results. Enter your results in the table below.

Average volume of BA2:

Questions:

a) Calculate the;

i) Molar concentration of sodium hydroxide in BA1 (Na = 23, O = 16, H = 1)

ii) Moles of sodium hydroxide that reacted.

iii) Concentration of BA2 in moles per litre.

b) Calculate:

i. The number of moles of BA2 that reacted with the sodium carbonate.

ii. Calculate the number of moles of BA3 that reacted

iii. Calculate the concentration of BA3 in grams per litre

iv. Percentage purity and impurity of sodium carbonate

Question two

You are provided with the following

𝐹𝐴1 which is a mixture of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate.

𝐹𝐴2 which is a solution of 0.1 M hydrochloric acid.

You will require to determine the percentage of sodium hydroxide in the 𝐹𝐴1 mixture (𝑁𝑎 =
23, 𝐶 = 12, 𝑂 = 16, 𝐻 = 1)

Procedure I

i) By use of a measuring cylinder, measure and transfer 100𝑐𝑚3 of 𝐹𝐴1 into a 250 𝑐𝑚3
volumetric flask and make up to the mark with distilled water. Label the resultant
solution 𝐹𝐴3 .
ii) Pipette 25 or 20 𝑐𝑚3 of 𝐹𝐴3 into a clean conical flask. Add 2-3 drops of
phenolphthalein indictor and titrate with 𝐹𝐴2 from the burette until the end of point is
reached.
Repeat the titration until you obtain consistent results.

Record your results in the table below
