Attempt all questions

Question one

You are provided with the following reagents;

Y which is oxalic acid crystals, H2C2O4.2H20

DA2 which is sodium hydroxide solution of unknown concentration.

Phenolphthalein indicator

You are required to;

Standardize DA2 using oxalic acid.

Procedure
Weigh accurately about 1.6g of Y in a clean beaker. Add 100cm3 of distilled water and stir to
dissolve T thoroughly. Then transfer this solution into a 250ml volumetric flask and make up the
solution to the mark. Label this solution DA1.
Pipette exactly (or 20) of DA1 into a clean conical flask and add 2-3 drops of phenolphthalein
indicator. Titrate it with DA2 from the burette until the solution just turns pink. Repeat the titration
to obtain consistent values.
Record your results in the table below.

Question two

You are provided with the following:

FA1 which is approximately 0.02M potassium manganate (VII) solution

FA2 which is a solution containing 6.6g of sodium ethanedioate, Na2C2O4 per litre;

FA3 which is a 2M sulphuric acid;

Solid T, which is hydrated iron (II) sulphate. FeSO4.nH2O

You are required to determine the:

(i) Concentration of potassium manganate (VII) in FA1.

(ii) Number of moles of water of crystallization in T.
Potassium manganate (VII) reacts with sodium ethanedioate in the ratio of 2:5

Procedure:

(a) Pipette 25.0 (or 20.0) cm3 of FA2 into a conical flask. Add an equal volume of FA3 and heat
the mixture to about 600C.
(b) Titrate the hot mixture with FA1 until a permanent faint pink colouration is obtained.
(c) Repeat the titration until you obtain consistent results.
