PREPARATION


Wear scrubs (washable or disposable)


Wear plastic or rubber boots (dedicated)


Remove jewelry, watches, cell phones,
pager, pens, ID badges


Go to comfort room


Secure hair


Secure eyeglasses

Inspect PPE Prior to Putting On:


Everything available


In good condition


Sizes are correct

Put on Boot covers

Hand Hygiene with alcohol-based hand


rub (ABHR) or soap and water. Ensure 20-
30 seconds procedure

Put on 1st pair of Gloves (if using a short


cuff glove put it on now, under suit).

Put on Coverall. Coverall is large enough


for free movement. Tuck cuffs of inner
gloves under sleeves of the coverall. Zip
up coverall

Make thumb holes at border of cuff and


sleeves. Insert thump to hole to hold.


Put on N95 Respirator.


Cup the respirator in your hand with the
nosepiece at your fingertips allowing the
ties to hang freely below your hand


Position the respirator under your chin
with the nosepiece up.


Pull the top strap over your head resting
it high at the back of your head.


Pull the bottom strap over your head and
position it around the neck below the
ears.


Mold the nosepiece (using two fingers of
each hand) to the shape of your nose.
Pinching the nosepiece using one hand
may result in less effective respirator
performance.

Complete a user seal check by exhale


sharply and Inhale deeply.

Put on Hood:


Over the N95 respirator


Covers all of hair, ears and neck

Put on Outer Apron, tie with simple bow.

Put on Outer Gloves: (with extended


cuffs), Ensure the cuffs are pulled over
the sleeves of the gown or coverall.

Put on Face Shield or goggles:


Use anti-fog spray to prevent fogging


Over the N95 respirator


Covers all of the hair, ears and neck

Trained observer to verify the following:


All skin covered


Comfortable: able to extend the arms,
bend at the waist and do range of
motions


All areas of the body remain covered
during range of the movement

To compute for the Total Score:

Disinfect Outer Gloves: with 1:10 /


approved bleach disinfectant wipe or
ABHR.

Remove Apron:

Break at neck


Avoid contaminating gloves by rolling the
apron from inside to outside.

Assess the PPE for visible contamination


or cuts or tears.


Visibly contaminated? Then disinfect
affected PPE using 1:10 / approved
bleach disinfectant wipe or spray.

Disinfect outer-gloved hands with either a


1:10 / approved bleach disinfectant wipe
or sanitizer.

Remove boot and discard boot covers


using a “hands free” approach by
stepping on the back of the cover and lift
foot.

Disinfect outer-gloved hands with either a


1:10 / approved bleach disinfectant wipe
or ABHR

Remove and discard outer gloves (do not


to contaminate inner gloves during
removal)

Inspect and Disinfect Inner Gloves:


Inspect the inner gloves for visible
contamination, cuts, or tears.


Any defect? Disinfect gloves, remove
gloves, do hand hygiene on bare hands,
put on clean gloves.

Disinfect the glove with a 1:10 /
approved bleach disinfectant wipe or
ABHR

Remove the full-face shield by tilting the


head slightly forward, grabbing the rear
strap and pulling it over the head, gently
allowing the face shield to fall forward
and discard. Remove goggles but lifting
back of strap over your head and pulling
out and away. Avoid touching the front
surface of the face shield or goggles.

Disinfect inner gloves with either a 1:10 /


approved bleach disinfectant wipe or
ABHR

Unfasten (if applicable) hood, gasp the


back of the hood and carefully remove by
pulling backwards. Do not touch the
inside of the hood.

Disinfect inner gloves with either a 1:10 /


approved bleach disinfectant wipe or
ABHR.

Remove Coverall and discard.


Avoid contact of scrubs with outer
surface of suit during removal.


Lift chin.


Find zip at the level of your belly and
carefully trace your fingers up to find the
zip tab and fasteners with one hand.


Hold outside of top of suit with the other
hand. Unzip or unfasten coverall
completely before rolling down and
turning inside out.


Avoid contact of scrubs with outer
surface of coverall during removal,
touching only the inside of the coverall.

Disinfect inner gloves with either a 1:10 /


approved bleach disinfectant wipe or
ABHR.

Change Inner Gloves:


Remove and discard gloves taking
care not to contaminate bare hands
during removal process


Perform hand hygiene with ABHR.


Put on a new pair of clean gloves.

Remove N95 Respirator:


Tilt the head slightly forward


Grasp first the bottom tie or elastic
strap


Then the top tie or elastic strap.


Remove without touching the front of
the N95 respirator.


Discard N95 respirator

Disinfect gloves with either a 1:10 /


approved bleach disinfectant wipe or
sanitizer

Disinfect Washable Shoes:



Sit on a new clean surface


Starting at the top and finishing with
the sole/ underside, use 1:10 /
approved bleach disinfectant wipe to
wipe down every external surface of
the first boot.


Do not set down cleaned boot in high-
risk area.


Starting at the top and finishing with
the sole/ underside, use 1:10 /
approved bleach disinfectant wipe to
wipe down every external surface of
the 2ND boot.


Do not set down cleaned boot in high-
risk area.

Disinfect and Remove Gloves:


Disinfect gloves with either a 1:10 /
approved bleach disinfectant wipe or
sanitizer.


Remove discard gloves taking care not
to contaminate bare hands during
removal process.


Reach back and place into
contaminated waste container on high-
risk side.

Perform Hand Hygiene: with ABHR.

Final inspection for any indication of


contamination of the surgical scrubs or
disposable garments.


For breaches in PPE:


Wash skin with soap and water


Irrigate mucous membranes with
copious amounts of water or an
eyewash solution


Call IPC / ER Physician immediately
