Pearson r Correlation and Prediction
I. Find the value of Pearson r between the grades in English (x) and grades in Math (y).
Test the significance of their correlation at 5%. Interpret the results. Plot a scatter
diagram for the data below. Then, use regression analysis to predict the grade of a
student in Math if his grade in English is:
a. 77
b. 98
c. 67
Student English Grade Math Grade (y) xy X2 Y2
(x)
Ho: There is no significant correlation between English Grade and Math grade.
Α = 5%

𝑟 = 0.2086
Df = N – 2 = 10 – 2 = 8
Tabular value of 8 to 0.05 = 0.632
0.2086 < 0.632
Accept the null hypothesis.
There is no significant linear relationship between the English grades and Math grades of the
class. The verbal interpretation of r shows there is a slight correlation between the two
variables.
