If you want to know your true age, don’t look at the calendar. The calendar tells you what your

With age being such a crucial feature of a person’s identity that we tag everyone from newlyweds
to traffic scofflaws with it, it’s no wonder that you feel you’d float off into a cloud if you couldn’t
hang onto this defining feature of your very being.

Yet age is not a very good indication of very much about a person. Think of the older-than-her-
years hypermature 15-year-old who could easily pass for 22. How about the older adult who lives
down the street from you whose sprightly step would rival that of someone 40 years her junior?
As Margaret Atwood once said about the subjective nature of age, “Another belief of mine: that
everyone else my age is an adult, whereas I am merely in disguise.”

Perhaps the best way to test your functional age is to ask yourself this very simple question: how
old do you feel? Forget what the calendar says, and even forget what your functional ages are. The
age you feel may very well be the most important factor determining your health, happiness, and
longevity. Research consistently demonstrates that the people who are happiest and best adjusted
in their middle and later years are the ones who don’t focus on their limitations, worry about their
memory, or become preoccupied with whether others view them as old. Being able to subtract a
few years from this subjective age, or age that you feel, may actually buy you a few more objective
years of a healthy and productive life.

De eerste stad, die wij bereikten, heet Simla. Zij telt nauwelijks 15000 inwoners,
maar zij is een der schoonste steden der wereld en een der machtigste, want in
haar cederwoud verheft zich een slot en in dit slot staat een Keizerstroon. En de
Keizer is de Koning van Engeland, wiens macht in Indië is toevertrouwd aan een
vice-Koning. Als de verlammende zomerwarmte begint, begeven alle
Engelschen, die door hun beroep niet worden gebonden aan het laagland, zich
naar de bergen, en wie in de [165]Pendschab woont, trekt naar Simla. De vice-

beambten en officieren, allen reizen met vrouw en kind omhoog naar Simla, en
daar leeft de aanzienlijke wereld onder genot en feesten, precies als in Londen.
Dan stijgt het getal inwoners tot 30.000.

Simla is op heuvels gebouwd, omgeven door duizelingwekkende afgronden en


de huizen kleven als zwaluwnesten tegen steile berghellingen. De straten
loopen terrasgewijze boven elkaar, en overal in het rond is donker, dicht woud.
Maar door de open plekken tusschen de ceders ziet men in het verre Zuid-
Westen de vlakten van de Pendschab en de kronkelende loop van de Satledsch
en in het Noorden glinsteren de gebergten van den Himalaja met hun eeuwige
sneeuw. Het moet heerlijk zijn, na de verstikkende lucht van Indië, in Simla weer
te herademen; maar misschien is het nog heerlijker om, ontkomen aan Tibet’s
snijdende koude, daar te rusten.

Van Simla voert ons de trein door honderd tunnels en de dolste kromme lijnen
over ontelbaar veel bruggen en langs diepe afgronden, omlaag in de Pendschab
en nu omringt ons de zengende gloed van dit laagland. Wat zou men niet geven
voor een zacht koeltje van Tibet’s sneeuwbergen! Maar wij moeten tevreden
zijn; kalm voor het open, voortdurend met water besproeide portierraam zitten
en bij elk station een groot glas limonade met ijs te drinken.

Wij bezien Dehli slechts vluchtig; de eens zoo groote en beroemde stad aan de
Dschamna, een zijrivier van de Ganges. Toen het land nog toebehoorde aan
een van het Noorden gekomen Mohammedaansche vorstenfamilie, was Dehli
de hoofdstad van het rijk en de zetel van den Groot-Mogol. Een groot aantal
trotsche gedenkteekenen herinneren nog aan deze dynastie; prachtige
gebouwen, uit zuiver wit marmer opgetrokken, welker muren en zuilen zijn
ingelegd met steenen van groote waarde, als lapis-lazuli, malachiet, nephrit en
agaat. In een dezer paleizen placht vroeger de Groot-Mogol in een open, door
dubbele zuilengangen omgeven hal, recht te spreken en gezanten te ontvangen.
Als de zon op deze zuilengangen schijnt, lijkt het alsof het marmer doorzichtig is
en lichtblauwe schaduwen vallen op den marmeren vloer. In de troonzaal stond
vroeger de troon van den Groot-Mogol, de pauwentroon. Hij was met dik goud
bekleed en met talrijke diamanten versierd; op de rugzijde straalde de beroemde
diamant Orlow, die nu den Russischen rijksscepter tooit. Toen in het jaar 1739
de Perzische Koning [166]Nadir Schah, den Groot-Mogol overwon, werd diens
milliardenschat, waaronder ook de pauwentroon en de grootste bekende
diamant, de Kohinoor of „berg des lichts”, die nu tot de Britsche kroonjuweelen
behoort, buit van den overwinnaar. Nu nog is de pauwentroon in het bezit van
den Perzischen Schah, nog stralen de gouden pauwen op den rug ervan, maar
de groote diamant mankeert, evenals de overige; zij werden, de een na den
ander, gestolen of er uitgebroken, als de opvolgers van Nadir Schah zich in
geldverlegenheid bevonden.

Als men eenige uren in de nauwe straten en bonte bazaars van Dehli heeft
rondgewandeld, en zich een weg heeft moeten banen door luidruchtige Hindoes
en Mohammedanen, dan is het een dubbel genot onder de gewelfde bogen van
de troonzaal te zijn. Dan begrijpt men de Perzische woorden ook, die boven den
ingang staan: „Als het paradijs op aarde te vinden is, dan is het hier, slechts
hier!”

Agra, wat verder omlaag aan de Dschamna, was eenigen tijd hoofdstad van den
Groot-Mogol, en een van die vorsten heeft hier (1629–1648) een gebouw
opgericht, dat nog heden als een der schoonste op aarde wordt beschouwd. Het
heet Tadsch Mahal, of het kroonpaleis, en is een grafmoskee ter herinnering aan
de lievelingsgemalin van den Groot-Mogol, Schah Dschahan, aan wier zijde hij
zelf in de crypte van de moskee is bijgezet.

Dit geweldig grafmonument is van louter witte marmersteenen gebouwd; men


heeft er twee en twintig jaar aan gewerkt, en de bouw heeft indertijd niet minder
dan 20½ millioen gulden gekost!

Door een prachtig portaal van rooden zandsteen, komt men eerst in een tuin,
die het heiligdom omgeeft. In een grooten vijver plassen goudvisschen en
drijven lotusbloemen; in het rond weelderig groen, vol zingende vogels en
springende eekhoorntjes. Jasmijn- en rozengeur waait ons tegemoet; jonge
cypressen verheffen zich hemelwaarts.

Verblindend wit in den zonneschijn, een zomerdroom van versteende witte


wolken, zweeft op een terras de marmeren Tadsch Mahal, een kunstwerk, als
alleen de liefde uit het puin der aarde weet tevoorschijn te tooveren. Op de vier
hoeken van het terras verheft zich een hooge, slanke minaret, eveneens van
marmer, en de koepel der achthoekige moskee heeft een hoogte van vijf en
zeventig meter. In het midden staan, achter een traliewerk van gebeeldhouwd
marmer, de grafmonumenten van den Schah Dschahan en van zijn Koningin
Mumtás-e Mahal. De sarcofagen van beiden rusten in de crypte.

De vier gevels van het gebouw zijn volkomen gelijk. Maar [167]de groene
achtergrond en de wisselende belichting wekken bij den toeschouwer steeds
nieuwe stemmingen. De door de zon bestraalde vlakken zijn sneeuwwit, de
schaduwen lichtblauw. Hier en daar schijnt het gebladerte een groenen
weerschijn op het witte marmer te werpen. Als de zon in vurig avondrood daalt,
wordt het geheele gebouw in een oranjekleurig schijnsel gehuld en men mag
Agra niet verlaten, zonder den Tadsch Mahal in maneschijn te hebben gezien.
Vochtig en nevelig, warm en zwijgend, ligt de tuin dan, maar de belichting der
marmeren muren is nu ijzig koud, de schaduwen lijken ravenzwart, alleen de
koepel glanst zilverwit. Nachtvlinders fladderen tusschen de boomen, en de
muggen gonzen luid. De geheimzinnige klanken van den dschungel galmen in
het rond en het vuilgrijze water van den Dschamna wentelt zich zachtruischend
naar den heiligen Ganges.

40. Een heilige stad.

Het stroomgebied van den Ganges, waardoor de spoor ons nu naar


het Oosten voert, is buitengewoon vruchtbaar en wordt door honderd
millioen, voor het meerendeel Hindoes, bewoond. Het wemelt van
steden, van welke verscheidene twee tot drie honderd jaar oud zijn,
en van ontelbare dorpen, waar de boeren hun hutten uit bamboes en
stroomatten hebben.

De Hindoes verbouwen tarwe en rijst en teelen prachtig ooft. Hun


kleine, bruine, aardige kinderen spelen spiernaakt voor de hutten.
Beklagenswaardige, kleine schepsels! Op hun negende jaar worden
zij al uitgehuwelijkt; de jonge echtgenooten wonen echter nog
gescheiden, totdat zij volwassen zijn, en vóór de
huwelijksplechtigheid is de jonge vrouw, zelfs voor haar
bloedverwanten, onzichtbaar. Maar nog ongelukkiger is een
weduwe. Vroeger moest zij zich met het lijk van haar man op een
brandstapel laten verbranden; deze huiveringwekkende gewoonte
hebben de Engelschen echter afgeschaft, maar haar lot is
desondanks nog altijd zwaar genoeg. Men gaat haar met afschuw uit
den weg en wie ’s morgens het eerst een weduwe ontmoet, dien zal
zeker op dien dag een ongeluk overkomen!

Aan het station van Benares stopt de trein en door een gewemel van
Hindoes en Mohammedanen in lichte, bonte kleeren, met tulbanden
of kleine ronde mutsen, brengt een voertuig mij naar een bungalow,
zooals het Indische logement heet, waar ik mij door een bad
verfrisch. [168]

Benares is de heiligste stad der aarde. Lang voordat Jeruzalem en


Rome, Mekka en Lhasa bestonden, was Benares de geboorteplaats
van den oerouden Indischen godsdienst, en nog steeds is de stad
het hart van het Brahmaïsme en het Hindoeïsme. Er zijn meer dan
twee honderd millioen Hindoes en het doel van aller verlangen is
Benares! De zieken sleepen er zich heen om in het water van den
heiligen Ganges weer gezond te worden, de ouden om hier te
sterven; en wie in de verte sterft, laat zijn asch naar Benares
zenden, opdat ze in het zaligmakende water van de heilige rivier
gestrooid worde. In Benares predikte ook Boeddha, 500 jaar voor
Christus’ geboorte, en voor zijn aanhangers, de vierhonderd millioen
Boeddhisten, is Benares ook een heiligdom.

De straten der stad zijn ontzettend nauw en van verstikkende


dampen en den stank van allerlei verrottende planten vervuld.
Rechts en links zijn open winkels, waar sierlijke vazen, schalen en
bekers van koper en andere metalen, vele er van met ingelegd
lakwerk, worden verkocht. De afgesleten straatsteenen zijn glad als
zeep van de mest van heilige koeien, die met half gesloten oogen,
hangende en lui hier staan of met sleependen gang aankomen en de
nauwe straten versperren. Overal ziet men goudsbloemen, want het
wordt als een goed werk beschouwd, deze viervoetige heiligen er
mede te voederen.

Gij kunt, dag in dag uit, de straten van Benares doorgaan, en


peinzend voor haar tweeduizend tempels zitten, duidelijk zal u het
raadsel van dezen Brahmaanschen godsdienst zeker even weinig
worden als mij! Milliarden jaren en 330 millioen goden, wie kan dat
begrijpen! Lees in elk geval de 4000 jaar oude zangen en gebeden
en bewonder hun poëzie, waarmede natuur en zon, regen en vuur,
aarde, wind en morgenrood bezongen worden. Maar wat gij er in
vindt aan diepzinnig gepeins over de eeuwigheid, zult gij nooit
begrijpen, als gij niet zelf een Hindoe zijt.
De Hindoes hebben drie voorname goden: Brahma, den Schepper,
Vischnoeh, den instandhouder en Siwa, den verwoester. Van deze
drie zijn de overige millioenen goden afkomstig; zoo beteekent
bijvoorbeeld de godin Kali niets dan een eigenschap van Siwa. Aan
deze godin werden vroeger nog kinderen geofferd; nu, nadat de
Engelschen deze ruwheid hebben verboden, nog slechts geiten.

De godsdienstige vereering der Hindoes beperkt zich echter niet tot


de goden. De gansche natuur is hen bijna heilig. Boven alles, de
koe, de stier, de aap, de krokodil, de slang, de schildpad, de adelaar,
de pauw en de duif. Leugen, diefstal en moord [169]zijn geoorloofd,
maar als een Hindoe vleesch eet of door een toeval ook maar een
haar van een koe inslikt, is hij veroordeeld tot de hel van de kokende
olie; hij is voor alle geloovigen een voorwerp van ontzetting, en
bovenal voor zichzelf! Dit bijgeloof is hem sedert duizenden jaren in
vleesch en bloed gedrongen, en bestaat tegenwoordig nog in volle
kracht. Een koe te dooden is hier in dit land, waar men zelfs
ziekenhuizen voor het vee bouwt, de ergste van alle
goddeloosheden. Een groote opstand tegen de Engelschen in 1857,
werd gedeeltelijk veroorzaakt, omdat de patronen van een nieuw
model geweer met—rundertalk waren ingesmeerd!

En daarbij worden de Hindoes geregeerd door blanke meesters, die


ossen slachten en het vleesch eten, een gewoonte, die voor de
Indiërs veel afschuwwekkender is dan weduwen te verbranden of
der godin Kali kinderen te offeren! Zoo hemelsbreed is hun wijze van
voelen van de onze verwijderd. Vaak ben ik de gast van Hindoes
geweest en uitnemend door hen onthaald, maar niets ter wereld zou
hen bewogen hebben met mij te eten; met een ongeloovige te eten
is verontreiniging en als Hindoes mij bezochten, had het in het
geheel geen doel hen iets voor te zetten. Bij groote feestelijkheden,
welke de Engelsch-Indische Vice-Koning in Calcutta aanricht, zag ik
voorname vorsten, Maharadscha’s in goud geborduurde, met
edelsteenen bezaaide gewaden, maar zij namen hun plaats pas kort
voor het einde van het diner in en raakten geen spijzen aan. Nam
een voornaam Hindoe toch deel aan den maaltijd, dan was hij een
afvallige, die uit zijn kaste was getreden.

Sedert Indië, of op zijn Perzisch, Hindostan, door de van het Noord-


Westen binnendringende Ariërs was veroverd, dus sedert meer dan
4000 jaren, zijn de Hindoes in kasten verdeeld, en het onderscheid
tusschen de verschillende kasten is veel grooter dan bij ons in
Europa tusschen ridders en boeren in de Middeleeuwen. Eens
waren de Brahmanen, de geestelijken, en de krijgslieden, de twee
voornaamste kasten. Nu zijn er duizenden van die kasten, want elk
handwerk vormt er een; alle goudsmeden bijvoorbeeld behooren tot
dezelfde kaste, alle sandalenmakers tot een andere. En ook zij, die
tot een kaste behooren, verontreinigen zich, als zij met die van een
der andere eten.

Als een Hindoe Indië verlaat of over de „Zwarte Zee” reist, verliest hij
het recht tot zijn kaste te behooren; slechts als hij de Brahmanen
groote sommen betaalt, kan hij dit recht onder zekere
boetedoeningen terug erlangen. Zulk een boetedoening bestaat in
het verorberen van vier, van de koe komende, stoffen: [170]melk,
boter en mest in tweeërlei vorm, want de koe is een
vleeschgeworden godheid en heiliger dan alle menschen, dat wil
zeggen—met uitzondering van de Brahmanen!

Daardoor ziet men ook de menigte mooie en vette koeien in de


straten van Benares. Evenzeer wemelt het hier van heilige apen. Zij
hebben een bijzonderen tempel, die gewijd is aan de gemalin van
Siwa, een booze vrouw, die slechts vreugde vindt in verwoesten en
die verzoend moet worden met bloedige offers.

Toen ik dezen apentempel eens bezocht, was men aan den ingang
juist bezig een geit te offeren. Twee mannen verkochten uit groote
korven gerst en noten, en raadden mij dringend aan een buidel vol
mede te nemen, om niet met ledige handen de heilige apen te
naderen. Nauwelijks had ik den hof betreden of een vijftigtal grijze
apen omgaven mij reeds, die grommend, snaterend en lachend, met
welbehagen en in goede stemming de tanden knarsten. Toen ik hun
een handvol korrels reikte, gingen ze op de achterpooten staan,
hielden mijn hand met een hunner zwarte pooten vast en namen met
den anderen een greep gerstenkorrels. Een tweede handvol
verdween even snel en zoo ging het verder, totdat mijn voorraad was
uitgeput. Daarna staarden zij mij met hun ronde, bruine oogen aan,
knarsten met de tanden, smakten met de lippen, krabden zich den
nek of onder de armen en verdwenen in een oogwenk, om op de
takken der naaste boomen te gaan schommelen. De apentempel is
hun kwartier, waar zij zeker zijn van hun voedsel, maar zij verheugen
zich in onbeperkte vrijheid en glippen ondertusschen overal in de
stad rond. Met „aapachtige handigheid” ziet men hen langs den rand
van de daken der huizen loopen, balkons en galerijen opklauteren,
over de straten springen, zich in de kronen der boomen slingeren,
die een tempelhof beschaduwen, en het volgende oogenblik weer op
lijsten en uitspringsels van de daken van hooge pagoden plaats
nemen. En zij passen ook uitstekend bij geschilderde en
uitgesneden scènes uit de godensagen der Hindoes, die den
achtergrond vormen!

41. Aan de kust der geloovigen.

Voor dag en dauw, als de nachtelijke duisternis pas in het Oosten begint
te wijken, ben ik reeds aan de kade van Benares, huur een boot, die
vier mannen met stokken vooruitstuwen en zet mij neer op het dak der
kajuit in een rieten stoel. Langzaam langs de kade varend, heb ik een
voortreffelijk uitzicht op deze [171]vreemde stad, die zich langs den linker
oever van den Ganges uitstrekt, een lange uitgestrekte massa op elkaar
gedrongen gebouwen, huizen, muren en galerijen en daartusschen veel
pagoden, Hindoesche tempels met hooge torens en overladen
architectuur.

Benares.

Van den dertig meter hoogen oever voeren breede trappen naar de
rivier en steenen dammen steken als bruggen in het water.
Daartusschen staan houten getimmerten boven den waterspiegel, die
met stroodaken en groote zonneschermen zijn bedekt.
Hier is de verzamelplaats der geloovigen. Uit het binnenste der stad
komen zij omlaag naar de heilige rivier, om de opgaande zon te
begroeten; bruine, half naakte gedaanten, wier lichte kleedingstukken—
dikwijls niets meer dan een linnen doek—schreeuwen in schril-bonte
kleuren. Een ontzaglijk gewoel van menschen heerscht langs de rivier;
het deel van den oever, dat ik kan overzien, telt er op zijn minst vijf
duizend.

Ik laat de boot stil liggen, want dit schouwspel is te bijzonder.

Op een der steenen dammen nadert een Brahmaan en hurkt neder. Zijn
hoofd is glad geschoren, alleen in den nek staat nog een bosje haar. Hij
schept met de hand water uit de heilige rivier, slurpt het op, spoelt zijn
mond er mede en spuwt het weer uit. Hij roept Ganga aan, de dochter
van Vischnoeh en smeekt haar de onreinheid der geboorte en der
zonden van hem te nemen en hem tot zijn dood te beschermen. Daarop
[172]noemt hij de vier en twintig namen van Vischnoeh, staat op, roept
het heilige woord: „Om”, hetwelk Brahma, Vischnoeh en Siwa omvat.
Ten slotte wendt hij zich nog tot aarde, lucht, zon, maan en sterren, en
giet water over zijn kruin.

Nu wordt boven den dschungel, aan den rechteroever van den Ganges
de rand der zon zichtbaar. Haar opgaan wordt door deze duizenden
vrome pelgrims met wateroffers begroet. Men spat met de handen
water in de lucht naar de zon, en waadt over den langzaam dalenden
bodem de rivier in. De Brahmaan is weer neergehurkt en maakt nu met
handen en vingers de raadselachtigste bewegingen. Nu eens strijkt hij
over zijn kruin, dan legt hij zijn hand op oogleden, voorhoofd, neus,
ooren en tegen de borst, alles om Vischnoeh’s honderd en acht
verschillende openbaringen zinnebeeldig voor te stellen. Vergeet hij
slechts een enkele dezer ontelbare handbewegingen, dan zou de
geheele godsdienstoefening, die ongeveer twee uur in beslag neemt,
vergeefs zijn! Na het middageten en ’s avonds wordt dezelfde
ceremonie herhaald. In den tusschentijd heeft de Brahmaan in den
tempel andere godsdienstige plichten te vervullen.
Langzaam glijdt mijn boot de Ganges weer af. Daar ligt op lompen een
grijsaard uitgestrekt; hij is zoo mager, dat de huid over de ribben spant,
en even bruin als de andere geloovigen, maar zijn baard is sneeuwwit.
Hij is naar Benares gekomen, om aan de heilige Ganges, die ontspringt
uit den voet van Vischnoeh, te sterven. Ginds is een melaatsche, een
man van middelbaren leeftijd, wiens levenskracht door zijn wonden
wordt verteerd; hij zoekt genezing aan de Ganges, aan de bron des
levens. Hier daalt een jonge vrouw bevallig de steenen trappen af, de
steenen kruik draagt zij sierlijk op het hoofd. Zij waadt in de rivier, totdat
het water tot aan haar heupen reikt; daarna drinkt zij uit de holle hand,
spat water naar de zon, giet de druppels over haar haren, vult haar kruik
en gaat weer langzaam terug, terwijl de heilige stroom van den rooden
sluier, die haar lichaam omhult, afdruipt. Anderen zitten urenlang in
groepen aan den oever, en gaan gezamenlijk weer heen.

In den oneindigen keten van het bestaan is dit korte morgenuur slechts
een seconde der eeuwigheid. En al deze duizenden, die met het
wateroffer uit den heiligen stroom de zon huldigen, zijn overtuigd, dat
ieder, die een bedevaart naar Benares maakt en binnen haar muren
sterft, vergeving aller zonden ontvangt. Benares zien en dan sterven!
Dat is voldoende.

Evenals de Boeddhisten gelooven ook de Hindoes aan zielsverhuizing.


De ziel van een Hindoe moet meer dan acht [173]millioen dierlijke
gedaanten doortrekken, en in latere bestaansvormen de zonden
boeten, die zij vroeger beging. Daarom worden offers aan goden en
Brahmanen gebracht, om zoo spoedig mogelijk verlost te worden van
dat eeuwig zwerven, en den hemel der goden te mogen binnengaan.

’s Avonds, als de heetste uren van den dag voorbij zijn, vaar ik weer
langzaam langs de steenen trappen aan den oever langs de stad.
Triest, morsig en grauw stroomt nu de heilige rivier geluidloos door haar
bedding. Welk een menigte vuilheid en verrotting bevat dit
zaligmakende water! Heele bundels vertrapte, kwalijk riekende
goudsbloemen drijven voorbij, met afval, lompen, spaanders en schuim.
Uit een steil oploopende steeg nadert, onder huiveringwekkende
muziek, in snellen pas een lijkstoet den oever. Geraasmakend
tromgeroffel wordt door de muren der pagoden weerkaatst. Op de baar
onder een wit laken ligt de doode recht uitgestrekt, bruin en mager, en
lieden uit de kaste der lijkverbranders leggen hem op den aan den
oever opgerichten brandstapel. Weldra spat en knettert het vuur en
dikke rookwolken stijgen omhoog. De geur van verbrand vleesch dringt
tot mij door en ik laat de boot verder roeien. Met het brandhout zijn de
doodgravers echter niet al te verkwistend. Als de hoop hout opgebrand
is, ligt het verkoolde zwarte lichaam nog op de gloeiende asch, en wordt
dan in de rivier geworpen!

In de Ganges wonen goden, niet alleen onzichtbare, die met het


zegenrijke water leven en kracht uit de akkers der Hindoes halen, maar
ook zichtbare. Voor den Hindoe is toch bijna de geheele natuur de
openbaring eener godheid en de krokodil is ook een godheid. Men mag
hem niet storen of dooden. Ongehinderd kruipt hij op den oever, grijpt
met zijn scherpgetande kaken kleine, spelende kinderen en verdwijnt
met zijn buit in den stroom. Wel treuren vader en moeder, maar zij
denken nooit aan wraak, doch beschouwen den krokodil nu misschien
nog met grooter eerbied dan te voren. „Op aarde is zijn gelijke niet. Hij
is de koning aller roofdieren,” staat in den bijbel.

Vroeger wierp men de dooden ook onverbrand in de rivier. Om het


daardoor ontstane gevaar voor pest hebben de Engelschen deze
gewoonte verboden, maar ze moet in enkele afgelegen streken nog
bestaan. Men legt de dooden op een klein vlot en laat ze op de golven
van de Ganges langzaam door den stillen nacht verder dragen. Eens
zag ik zulk een dooden pelgrim, die midden in de rivier op een
zandbank was blijven hangen. Ik zou hem in het geheel niet hebben
opgemerkt, als [174]de gieren geen lijkwacht hadden gehouden bij zijn
overblijfselen.

Nu straalt het licht der volle maan over de rivier en de rietplaten en de


sprookjesachtige stemming van een Meinacht verbreidt zich over den
oever van de Ganges. Het water ruischt zacht om een vastgeraakten
boomstam en het ritselt in de donkere schuilhoeken van het riet. Een
panter, op buit uit, sluipt rond. Zijn gele oogen gloeien als kolen in het
kreupelhout. De apen zijn langs de lianen omhooggeklauterd en zitten
slapend onder de kronen der boomen. Een slaapdronken, uit den droom
opgeschrikte papegaai, laat zijn stem als een schrille fluit over het woud
weerklinken, maar niemand slaat acht op hem, zelfs de panter wendt
zich niet om. In het water komt eenige beweging. Een krokodil strekt zijn
kop langzaam boven het water en kruipt op den boomstam. Het
maanlicht glinstert op de natte schubben van zijn rug. Hij luistert
ingespannen en wacht eenigen tijd op buit. Maar spoedig trekt hij zich
weer terug, buigt de staart als een stalen veer en verdwijnt in de diepte.

Daar, plotseling, schokt een toon de lucht, welke in het rond schrik
verbreidt. Als schorre, klagende donder rolt het door het riet. De tijger is
ontwaakt en verlangt naar bloed! Wie eens het doodsoordeel heeft
gehoord, dat in het waarschuwingsgehuil van den tijger ligt, vergeet het
nooit meer!

42. Het Licht van Azië.

In de zesde eeuw voor Christus’ geboorte leefde in Kapilavastoe,


200 kilometer noordelijk van Benares, de Arische stam der Sakya.
De koning van dit land had een zoon, Siddharta genaamd, die naar
lichaam en ziel met bovenmenschelijke gaven was uitgerust. Toen
de prins zijn achttiende jaar had bereikt, zou hij een gemalin kiezen
en zijn keuze viel op de schoone Iarodara. Maar om haar hand te
winnen, moest hij met de dappersten en krachtigsten van zijn volk
om den prijs dingen.

Eerst traden de meesters in het boogschieten op en troffen met hun


pijl het doel, een koperen trom. Siddharta beval het doel tweemaal
zoo ver te plaatsen; hij nam een boog, welke echter brak. Men
haalde uit een tempel een tweede, die zoo hard was, dat niemand ze
kon spannen. Siddharta was ze met gemak meester; de pijl
doorboorde niet alleen den trom, maar zette haar vlucht nog een
eind over de vlakte voort.

Daarna nam men de zwaardproef. De andere mededingers


[175]sloegen met één houw den stam van een krachtigen boom door.
Siddharta’s zwaard sneed twee naast elkaar staande stammen in
eens door, zoo glad en zoo snel, dat de stammen rechtop bleven
staan. De overige mededingers jubelden reeds en spotten over het
stompe zwaard van den prins. Maar nu voer een zwak koeltje door
de kronen der boomen en beiden stortten op den grond.

De derde proef was, een woest paard te bedwingen, dat niemand


kon berijden. Maar onder de sterke hand van Siddharta werd het
volgzaam en mak als een lam.
Daarna bracht de prins zijn gemalin in het prachtige paleis in
Kapilavastoe. Maar de koning was bang, dat boosheid, armoede en
ongeluk, welke buiten in de wereld heerschten, de ziel des prinsen
zou kunnen verduisteren, en daarom liet hij rondom het paleis een
hoogen muur bouwen, op welks torens wachters werden gesteld.

Nu leefde de prins gelukkig in zijn slot. Maar op zekeren dag overviel


hem het verlangen, te weten hoe de menschen buiten in de wereld
leefden. De koning stond hem het verzoek toe het paleis te verlaten,
maar beval dat de stad zich als tot een feest moest tooien, en dat
men alle armen, zieken en verminkten moest wegvoeren. In zijn,
door stieren getrokken, wagen, reed de prins door de straten.

Daar zag hij een gebogen, vermagerden grijsaard, die hem de hand
toestak met den kreet: „Geef mij een aalmoes, morgen of
overmorgen sterf ik!”

De prins vroeg of dit afschuwelijk schepsel, zoo geheel verschillend


van alle anderen, werkelijk een mensch was.

„Ja,” antwoordde de wagenbestuurder, „alle menschen worden oud,


zwak en ellendig, als deze, hier.” Daarna keerde Siddharta treurig en
peinzend naar huis terug.

Na eenigen tijd verzocht hij zijn vader de stad nu ook in het


alledaagsche kleed te mogen zien. Als koopman verkleed en onder
geleide van denzelfden wagenbestuurder, ging hij te voet door de
straten. Overal zag hij welvaren en ijver, maar eensklaps klonk op
zijn weg de klacht: „Ik lijd, help mij naar huis, voordat ik sterf.”
Siddharta bleef staan en zag een pestlijder, wiens lichaam bedekt
was met uitslag en die zich niet kon bewegen. De prins vroeg aan
zijn geleider wat dit was en vernam, dat een zieke voor hem lag.

„Kan de ziekte alle menschen overvallen?”


„Ja, heer, ze sluipt rond als de tijger door het kreupelhout, men weet
niet, wanneer en waarom, maar overvallen kan zij [176]ons allen.”

„Kan de ongelukkige lang in zulk een ellende leven en wat is het


einde?”

„De dood!”

„Wat is de dood?”

„Kijk ginds, daar komt een lijkstoet. De man, daar op de bamboe-


baar, heeft opgehouden te leven. Er achter gaan zijn treurende
bloedverwanten. Zie, hoe zij hem bij den oever op een stapel hout
leggen en hoe het brandt; spoedig zal er niets meer dan een hoopje
asch over zijn.”

„Moeten alle menschen sterven?”

„Ja, heer.”

„Ik ook?”

„Ja.”

Treuriger dan ooit keerde prins Siddharta naar huis terug, en in zijn
ziel rijpte het verlangen de menschen van leed, verdriet en dood te
verlossen. Hij hoorde een stem in zich: „Kies tusschen koningskroon
en bedelstaf, tusschen wereldlijke macht en eenzame paden, die
naar de redding der menschen voeren!”

Zijn besluit was genomen. Zacht ging hij naar de legerstede van
Iarodara en zag zijn jonge vrouw met haar pasgeboren zoon in den
arm op een bed van rozenbladeren rusten. Daarna verliet hij alles,
wat hij had liefgehad, beval zijn geleider zijn paard te zadelen en
reed naar de koperen poorten, die met drie wachten waren bezet.
