Die hellenische Kunst.
Und nun ist es, als käme Ordnung in ein Chaos, wenn im
nächsten Jahrtausend auf hellenischem Boden der dorische Tempel
festgefügt vor uns steht. Die erste Architektur, die alle Wucht des
Monuments begründet in der Gliederung der Einzelform, in der
klaren Scheidung von Kraft und Last, tragendem und getragenem
Gliede und sie wieder vereinigt durch den edlen Rhythmus des
Ganzen. Der Poseidon-Tempel von Pästum (Abb. 11) ist nicht nur
ein Bau von ungeheurer Kraft: zum erstenmal tritt das Verhältnis der
Bauglieder zueinander, der Rhythmus der Proportionen, tritt die
Schönheit als Meister des Baues ein. Sein tektonisches Gewissen
hebt ihn weit über die Kunst der kretischen Paläste, seine
Eurhythmie weit über die ägyptische Massenhaftigkeit. Aber, so edel
die Erscheinung des Tempels auch ist, fehlt ihm heute vieles, um
uns seinen ursprünglichen Sinn verstehen zu lassen; es fehlen ihm
die Skulpturen im leeren Giebelfeld, die Reliefs im Fries, die Farben,
die alle Glieder dieses Organismus überzogen. Er scheint zu ernst,
zu streng, zu herb. Die Zeit hat die Festlichkeit zerstört, die der
hellenischen Kunst wie dem hellenischen Leben die Harmonie mit
dem Ernst des Daseins gab.
Es ist bei dem eindringlichen Studium gerade der hellenischen
Kunst natürlich, daß wir eine ganze Anzahl von Rekonstruktionen
griechischer Tempel haben. Wenn in Bauwerken, wie diesem Tempel
von Pästum etwa, die Grundelemente des Stils völlig erhalten sind,
schien es nicht schwer zu sein, die Einzelheiten zu ergänzen. Aber
gerade das Empfinden für diese Einzelheiten verlangt ein feines
Stilgefühl, wie es wenige besitzen. Erst seit wenigen Jahren, seit
Furtwängler, als er Ägina für die Kunstgeschichte gewann, eine
Rekonstruktion des vorher Athena-Tempel genannten Aphaia-
Tempels gab, besitzen wir eine vollendete Nachschöpfung,
gegründet auf strengste Forschung, geschaffen mit feinstem
Stilgefühl (Abb. 12).
