DEFINITION OF
EPISTEMOLOGY
Epistemology :
Theory of knowledge, the philosophical study of the nature, origin, and scope of
knowledge.

Derived from two Greek words, episteme (knowledge) and logos,

the combination of these two words form a discipline of knowledge
and is one of the main branches of philosophy, namely the study
of knowledge.

As states by Basri Husin (2010), in Al Mawrid: A Modern Arabic

English DIctionary, the Arabic word of ‘epistemology’ is translated as
nazariyyah al-ma`rifah.

ISLAMIC
EPISTEMOLOGY

The concept of epistemology according to the Islamic

perspective plays an important role in a society in which it is a
worldview that encompass life in the world and the hereafter.

Islamic epistemology, which is founded on the source of

naqliyyah (revelation), does not neglect the aspects of 'aqliyyah
based on the nourishment of intellect and the development of
human mind.
Basri Husin. 2009."Beberapa Aspek Epistemologi: Konsep, Tabiat Dan Sumber- Sumber Ilmu dalam Tradisi Islam
. Jurnal Usuluddin. Vol.30. p.186.
PURPOSE OF
KNOWLEDGE IN ISLAM

The primary goal of knowledge in the name of Allah is to

know the Truth to worship correctly that no one but God, the
originator of reality, alone, and to be thankful to Him.

SOURCES OF KNOWLEDGE IN ISLAM

Therefore, in Islamic epistemology, the explanation of the

source of knowledge is emphasised first, to the word of
Allah, in the form of the sacred book of the Quran, and
second, Prophet SAW as the receiver of revelation, which in
this case corresponds to hadith.

Sources of Knowledge in Islam
However, Islamic epistemology based on the Quran and Sunnah
also affirm other sources of knowledge, namely the mind (aql) and
heart (qalb) and the senses found in the sources of knowledge in
Islam.

Muslim thinkers like as al-Kindi, al-Farabi, "and Ibn Sina agree with
the five senses perception.

The senses are man's means for capturing, catching, and helping
the intellect in understanding and recognising empirical objects.

on the concept
of Knowledge

Allah says thus: “Read! In the Name of your Lord Who

has created (all that exists). He has Created man from a
clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read and your
Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by
the pen. He has taught man that which he knew not”
(Al Quran. Al-‘Alaq.96: 1-5:)

CONC L U S I O N
In Islam, knowledge is really important to the nation of
Ummah.

Therefore when we talks about the sources, the purposes,

classification, the evidence from Quran and sunnah and it's
application to the contemporary context, we find that
knowledge in Islam is worthful.

"The concept of knowledge in Islam is already perfect from the

early period of Islam in line with revealing the last verse of Al
Quran to the prophet".
