Introduction
Alhamdulillah, through the grace of Allah, this small booklet,
First Steps to Reading Urdu has been completed and the first
edition is in your hands.
This book has been compiled using books commonly used to
introduce children to reading Urdu. We have broken down
each rule into different lessons and exercises to make it
easier for the students. Also, we have added brief notes with
English examples so the student can relate the Urdu
pronouciation to English words.
A Few Notes
The objective of this book is to help beginners understand
how to read Urdu. No effort at all has been made to help
understand the language itself. This is because many times
words with easy pronounciation do not always have an easy
translation. It is similar to Arabic; ‫ انسح اوقلادع‬is used to teach
reading Arabic, but is never used to teach understading the
language. Keeping this in mind, we have written all the
vocabulary under the words so the reader does not have to
memorize them. Yes, the student may be able to pick up
words as he reads them.
The reader will not necessarily understand how the meaning
has been derived and the teacher should not emphasize
learning the vocab at all. This booklet is only meant to help
reading.
Hence, all focus should be on making progress in reading and
pronouncaition. Understanding Urdu should be left for the
second book in this series.

4
Lesson 1
The Alphabet
In this lesson we will discuss the alphabet. You would have already learnt most of the
letters in Arabic. The new letters are in colour.

When two alifs come together it is written as ‫آ‬.
An alif will always have a zabar before it, therefore we will not write the zabar.
