CHAPTER 2
SEISMIC LOAD ANANYSIS

2.1 INTRODUCTION

Seismic load analysis examines how buildings respond to earthquake

forces to ensure they remain safe and stable. It involves predicting the shaking
effects of earthquakes on structures and designing them to withstand those forces.
Seismic load analysis is done as per IS 1893(Part-1):2016.

2.2 SEISMIC LOAD ANALYSIS BY STATIC ANALYSIS METHOD

Various load combination for Seismic Analysis are:

1. DL+EQ
2. 1.5 (DL-EQ)
3. 1.5 (DL+EQ)
4. 1.2 (DL+LL-EQ)
5. 1.2 (DL+LL+EQ)

As per analysis along critical section for above load combinations,

1.2(DL+LL+EQ) gives highest horizontal or lateral force.

Calculation of Design Seismic Force by Static Analysis Method

Table 2.1: Design Steps for Seismic Force by Static Analysis Method
For load combination of 1.2 (DL+LL+EQ)
Floor length in X-direction= 32m
Floor length in Y-direction= 17m
The floor area = 544sq.m
Live load= 8kN/sq.m
Earthquake load= 4kN/sq.m
Thickness or depth of the slab= 0.165m
Dead load of the slab= 4.125kN/sq.m
The total seismic weight on the floors and roofs
1st floor W1= 1162.128kN
Ground floor W2= 1426.4752kN

5
Above tie beam W3= 264.3472
Earthquake load and live load = 2611kN/sq.m
Total seismic weight in structure W= 6556.9805kN
Height of the building h= 9.7m
EL in X-Direction:
T=(0.09h)/√d 0.15sec
From Fig. 2 of IS: 1893, for T=0.15 sec,
Sa/g= 2.5
Ah={(Z/2)(Sa/g)}/(R/I)
Seismic zone factor Z (from table 3) 0.36
Importance factor I 1.5
Response reduction factor R 5
Ah= 0.1
Design base shear
VB=AhW 885.19236kN
EL in Y-Direction:
T=(0.09h)/√d 0.21sec
From Fig. 2 of IS: 1893, for T=0.21 sec,
Sa/g= 2.5
Ah={(Z/2)(Sa/g)}/(R/I)
Seismic zone factor Z (from table 3) 0.36
Importance factor I 1.5
Response reduction factor R 5
Ah= 0.1
Therefore, for this building the design seismic force in Y-direction is same as that
in the X-direction. Ah values are same.

CHAPTER 3
DESIGN OF VARIOUS STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS
3.1 INTRODUCTION

This chapter deals with the design of various structural elements of Library and
Computer centre. The various structural elements are beams, column and footing
etc.

3.2. BEAM DESIGN

Effective length of beam, (L ) = 2.65m

Total load on beam = 25.75 kN/m

Assuming width of the beam b = 500mm
And effective depth of the beam d = 600mm
Acting moments,

M = 551.191 kNm

M = 585.600 kNm

Moment at centre of the span due to unbalance moment,

=> 0.87 × 415 × 𝐴 = 0.36 × 20 × 400 × (600 − 50) × 0.48

=> 𝐴 = 2105.85𝑚𝑚

Tension reinforcement for unbalance moment,

Unbalance moment, M = 585.600 − 496.668 = 88.932 𝑘𝑁𝑚

∴M = 0.87𝑓 𝐴 × (𝑑 − 𝑑′)

=> 88.932 × 10 = 0.87 × 415𝐴 × (600 − 50)

=> 𝐴 = 447.845𝑚𝑚

16
Total reinforcement in tension zone,

Check for one way shear

Considering critical section is at a distance d from the face of column.

Shear force(V) = upward pressure × area of the critical section

=> (V) = upward pressure × area of the critical section

By using interpolation stress at a distance d from face of column,

p − 16.956 141.226 − 16.956
=
2.775 − 0 3.7 − 0

=> p = 110.158 kN/m

For minimum percentage of steel 0.15%

τ = 0.28 N/mm > τ

∴ Footing is safe against one-way shear.

Check for two-way shear

Considering critical section is at d/2 from the face of column.

By using interpolation stress at a distance d/2 from face of column,

p − 16.956 141.226 − 16.956
=
2.475 − 0 3.7 − 0

=> p = 100.082 kN/m

27
Shear force(V) = P − {p × (area of the critical section − column area)}

=> (V) = 832.898 − [100.082 × {(1.1 × 1.25) − (0.65 × 0.5)}]

∴ V = 723.812kN

V
τ =

CHAPTER 4

ESTIMATION OF COST
4.1 INTRODUCTION

This chapter deals with cost estimation of Library and Computer centre. Cost
estimation is the technique of calculating the various quantities and the expected
expenditure to be incurred on a particular work of project. The rates of different
item of work are determined by a list of rates called as schedule of rates (SOR). The
rates are finalised by government bodies such as Central Public Works Department
(CPWD), State Governments, etc. The cost estimation has been prepared on the
basis of CPWD Schedule of Rates for the year 2021.

4.2 BAR-BENDING SCHEDULE

The bar bending schedule is a tabular breakdown of reinforcing bars that includes
details such as bars types, total length, weight and drawing of the desired bending
shape of bar.

(Note: Slab and Stair design details are taken from Group no. 14 for BBS
preparation and estimation.)

CHAPTER 5

CONCLUSION
In this project, “Design of frame for proposed Library and Computer
centre at JIST campus, Jorhat “is carried out. The proposed Library and
Computer centre drawing plan has been provided by Archineer & Associates,
Architects, Engineers & Planners For designing various structural elements IS 456:
2000 has been followed. For Seismic analysis “Criteria for Earthquake Resistant
Design of Structures” of “IS 1893(Part I): 2016” has been followed. For moment
distribution portal frame method has been adopted and all structural elements
drawings has been prepared by following IS 13920:1993(Ductile Detailing of
Reinforced Concrete Structures subjected to Seismic Forces- code of practice). Bar-
bending schedule has been prepared for determining weight of reinforcements. A
detailed estimate has been prepared.

The theoretical knowledge gained throughout the course has been

implemented practically, also we learn new things like Kani’s method, Seismic
analysis etc. This project has helped the team to acquire proper skills of AutoCAD®,
Excel and Cost estimating.
